Freaking out a little, they are removing my granite bar!

So, the backsplash install got underway this weekend and when we got to the knee wall behind the sink, we discovered that the bar countertop was not level. They are coming at 3:00 to fix it and I am pretty anxious about it. The counter is 86 inches long and the granite is bookmatched to the counter below it, I am hoping there are no mishaps!

Thanks sprtphntc, I think we have the same stone, so I'm sure you understand! They have been here and gone and my counter is still not level. They could not guarantee that the granite would not break and didn't want to take responsibility for replacing it if it did, which would be next to impossible anyway. I put a call into the KD, the installers work for him. If he can't send someone else out that can do this, my next call will be to the stone yard that referred us to the KD. I am really annoyed right now!

some twigs dying is normal in Washington Navel. Considering the amount of work you did with the roots, really the tree looks to have very little shock. I would have expected more set back after that sort of transplanting. As to the flowers, it is also normal for there to be a big blossoms drop. Also normal is for there to be only a very small percentage of blossoms that make a fruit. From what I see, just keep watering daily and let is settle into it's new home. Light pruning of the brown twigs would be good, bot don't cut into the green. Just remove the dead wood. It would be nice if those lovely scented blossoms lasted longer wouldn't it?

Just checked in (don't spend much time even on conversations lately).... glad to hear that it's what they thought and not the other. re: caffeine... reducing your caffeine intake really helps! And helps the stress management too. Take it from an ex-caffeine junkie. At my worst, 2 cups of coffee and 6-10 diet cokes a day!! (I LOVE diet coke in a can!) I've been caffeine free for 3.5 years now! Well, mostly caffeine-free, it's hard to avoid it completely... I was never a chocoholic (I didn't even like chocolate until my mid-thirties!) so I don't eat much of it... but I haven't given it up. I also drink decaf coffee... which does have small amounts of caffeine. I may have a caffeinated root beer by mistake once in a while (some, like barq's, has caffeine, some, like A&W, doesn't). I don't drink real coffee. In fact in the past 3.5 years the only real coffee I had was that first summer while touring in Scotland and it became more of a problem to get decaf than just drink the stuff... and I wasn't fully weaned. now, I'd just skip it! I cut back in a couple of steps... went from 8-10 diet cokes a day to 2, keeping my cups of coffee at 1-2, or drinking decaf if it was just as available. I was very proud of myself. I remember the conversation with my doctor, though, when telling him I had "cut back" from nearly a case of diet coke a day. "That's really good!" he said. "Now Quit." I have noticed the differences of being caffeine free. The withdrawal week was tough, but not as tough as I expected. Now, I am less cystic (my are mostly POS-polycystic ovarian syndrome), have less headaches, and show better stress management. Not too long ago I was out to dinner. When dessert was served I dug in, took one bite, and could "feel" the espresso hit my blood stream. And it wasn't pleasant. I was eating Tiramisu, made the "right" way! I don't eat tiramisu anymore, either!! Good Luck!

I posted a link earlier to an article in the New York Times that applies to all of us here. It was about decision fatigue. I'll summarize it for you: The more decisions you make in a row, the worse you get at making decisions. This effect is exacerbated by low blood sugar. This information supports the advice the others have given you. Take your time. Don't let anyone rush you. Sleep on it. Make decisions when you are fresh, and when you have recently eaten. One other thing. If you haven't done it, take the Sweeby test. I found that to be of immense help in deciding on just about everything you could see in the kitchen. It really works. I was a complete basket case just doing a small kitchen. The fact that you are doing a whole new house and can still type in legible sentences shows great strength of mind. Leveling that doesn't seem like brain surgery with enough men to support it. Am I way off base?

How far out of level is it? You might just want to live with it.

There is 1/4 inch difference which is very apparent in the backsplash, it definitely needs to be fixed. The problem is with the epoxy they used to adhere the granite to the pony wall. They are afraid the granite will break if they try to break that bond. My guess is they don't have experience with removal.

Who do they think is responsible for installing it level in the first place? I would think that they don't have any choice but to accept responsibility ... ?

I agree Jellytoast, but it was pretty obvious that these guys were just not up for the job and I didn't want to risk the granite breaking.

Have them hot melt two 2x4's on edge to the granite, then drive shims under the top until the adhesive lets go. The 2x's provide the strength in tension to keep the top from cracking. Theoretically.

Knock the 2x's off and scrape off the hot melt after it's free.

Thanks Trebruchet! My husband spoke with another installer this evening who said he would brace the counter with 2x4's and use a multi-tool with a thin blade to cut through the epoxy. He doesn't seem to think it is a problem, the wall is only 4 inches thick. He is going to try to get by on Saturday, so we are in a holding pattern until then.
