I don't have an answer for you on the chairs, but it wouldn't hurt to go and look at them. Start at $100, it can't hurt! I hate it when someone doesn't at least give you a starting price.

Nice. I don't know about how much to offer. Do you know if they are high quality pieces? Maybe offer him $300.00 for the set of 4. CL is a great place for great deals. You can always go up but you can't go down. KWIM?

That's a good looking chair but do you want to use four of them around a round table? Question? Is that a leather chair? Since it is going to be a bar area and depending on the table you are going to use I think it would work, truly. At first, I thought it would be too much of a good thing. But I have seen that look in an upscale hotel bar (we all have) and it is good looking and comfy.
And it makes for a fun time when entertaining, IMO.

Offer the guy maybe $125.00 per chair you don't want to p-ss him off.

If he won't give you a price, then charge him for it. :+) $300. for all four chairs. (You can always go up.) I double dare you.

They are nice chairs. But, here is how you play this. You call to arrange a date to go see. Then, you tell him this: I really want to come see them to see if they will even work for what I have in mind. But I am on a budget, so if they are completely out of my league, there's no point in driving over to even get excited about them. You have them for sale. You MUST have Something in mind? What amount are you thinking for the set of four?

If he still balks, then, just tell him you really can't come with no idea of where you stand. The big Disadvantage to you starting first, is NOT that he might not accept your ballpark. Your idea might tally quite well with his. The big disadvantage is that now, you have almost made a committment at THAT price. So, if you go and only two chairs are nice, but not nice enough for half of the original price, since you now need more chairs, you are in the unpleasant position of having to Lowball your own offer. Don't do it. Play hardball but play it gently like I outlined. Also, with that in mind, if he says, let's say......$450 for all 4.........Then, you just say, "Well, let me come look." No comment on his price. If he says, $200 each...............NOW you have a bargaining place, but still, don't lowball on the phone. On the phone, you might say something like "Hmmmm. Well, I like them in photos, but I really don't have that kind of money to work with." Then, let him come to you and tell you that he might be negotiable. At that point, you might agree to at least look.

Hi Tina, yes I do remember you from the other board. (I lost all my saved emails from there - wah!) Thanks for remembering and asking about my writing. I am writing like crazy lately since I was laid off from my day job (yipee) back in October.

Goldust, I don't know what quality these are. He said 10 years old...that was it.

Newdawn, yes, they are leather chairs and that's sorta what I was thinking, the upscale comfy bar look. Eventually we'll put a nice mantle on the fireplace, etc. The one china cabinet might be ought of place but I'm out of room for anywhere else to put it.

Jan, Oh my yes, you were doing tons of colors for me on that room - such a big help! And listening to me whine and holding my hand. Can you believe the room STILL isn't done? (But oh, my garden is looking good.)

Redbazel, I like how you think! Thanks for outlining it for me. I can use my husband as the bad guy too. We just did that last night on a buffet and managed to get it at $200 less than I was willing to max out at. LOL Redbazel, what do you think of the style of the chairs?

My concern is that with the two cabinets staying in the space, and all the doorways, etc that limit their placement, I am not sure you have the width in the room to do four chairs and a large round cocktail table. Plus, don't the french doors swing into this room?

I like the lounge idea, but I more see a pair of chairs on either side of the fireplace a smaller low glass cocktail table in front of them, and a bench like this on the other side of the table, essentially almost in the center of the room, I guess.

This will allow more seating, but not visually close in the room, and people can sit facing either way on it to talk. Also kind of cool if you want to recling by the fire with a nice glass of wine some evening, just the two of you.

Then a pair of chairs and a wine table sitting in the corner where the loveseat is in the pix above.

You can't possibly decide on a price without seeing them, walking around them, smelling them, looking underneath them, and sitting in them.

Don't say this to him, of course. Just tell him you need to see them first.

After you see them, tell him, "I need to think about this." Then leave.

This puts you completely in control.

Just for comparison these antique club chairs are listed @ $200.00 each.

The richer color and more traditional lines says "clubby lounge" to me, but could also fit comfortably into a living room, den or office. A very versatile style. Also, a pair of leather chairs (versus 4 matching) is a very versatile set, and could go with another upholstered piece, wooden chairs or benches, ottomans, etc. And the grouping arrangements could also be made to work more easiy with door openings and other furniture pieces.

Sorry - but to me, the first set seem 'washed out' and 'transitional style' in comparison.

IMO, for a room this public, if the pieces aren't right, the price won't ever be right...

I think that they are too bulky and not in keeping with the other pieces in the room. Not that I am saying that they need to match, heaven forbid, but their scale seems wrong to me and stylistically, they are not pretty enough.

Yes, the french doors swing into the room though we've locked one side down and only have one open for the dog to go around in circles.

Your concern about the two cabinets and the placement is well placed. Tomorrow I will have manpower to help move a few things around. The bar is currently in the dining area and will go back to where it is in the picture. The china cabinet is currently where the two floral chairs are with the tall table. I really like it there because it is filled with my blue and white collectibles that you see when you come in the door.

I hope to plot this out better on one of those arrange a room things tomorrow.

if I understand your idea, you could still see four chairs in there but placed differently? Plus the daybed? Interesting idea, BTW, on the daybed. I'm going to ponder that. Like you, I didn't want to close off the room. I was thinking of the chairs (slightly angled) but facing each other almost as if there were a pair of matching loveseats coming out from the fireplace. And I was thinking a small round table not a large one.

Oh, and as for sitting in front of the fireplace with a glass of wine when it is just the two of us, we do it in this room, {{!gwi}}

That's what makes the other room so tough - we don't use it at all except for company.

Oh my, I LOVE those chairs and would $200 a pop for them in a heartbeat. That actually helps me with these chairs because these don't give me the same reaction.

Turns out he is traveling this week so we actually have some time to move things around and measure. And if they are gone, they're gone and it wasn't meant to be.

Thanks so much for weighing in. The chairs that dekr8 posted helped me a lot because they jumped off the screen and said they belonged in my room. It makes it easier for me to at least go look at these chairs (heck, I could maybe use one in the library if the price is right because I have to get my little out-of-scale chair out of there)

I like them, but don't love them. The ones that dekr8 posted are gorgeous. No quibbling on price. What city were they in?

And I agree with what you said just now, Susan........bout jumping on an 'almost' good deal. I have done that many a time. It's hard to know what is a truly good deal and what's just something that may work, but won't give you that "Ah Ha!" feeling when you look into your room.
