Folk Art With Crosses - WIP

Took an old Habitat/Humanity blue cabinet door, found some scrap wood in garage, and put together the substrate. Gonna try to keep it simpler, and fill in now w/red glass for the rest. The bottom left cross was clear glass and I put gold leaf on back - doesn't show in picture. Can't see the top details but the gold round thingies on each tower are earrings. The blue blown glass heart top center is from PV and was part of a gift box from Cindy/Jane. It's surrounded by small red glass hearts. Large cross (and one not shown) is a thoughtful and generous gift from a forum member. Hope you don't mind, Ann, that I spray painted it gold and brushed it w/black (oil) and wiped the black off, leaving sorta a copper tone. Round mirrors across the center bar under the large cross. Dominoes down bottom center w/metal beads down them. Thank you, ladies, for your thoughtfulness in gifting me w/such treasures.

You have such a way with substrates slow, I love the shape! Not to mention all the crosses. Its gonna be a beaut!

Just a response to a couple of folks that had comments or questions directed to me. Don't want to hijack the thread, but since it seems to be completed, perhaps no one will mind. NCamy: we're almost neighbors, as our lake house is 1-1/2 hours west of Asheville, on a lake that is better known for the river rafting provided by the dam on our lake. I'm sure you can guess which one. Asheville is one of my favorite haunts. Mindstorm: Thanks for the compliments on the DR chairs and library desk. The dining room chairs (and table) were made by a local craftsman in Asheville, NC - Jan Derr of Placeways Studio. Their design was a collaboration between Jan, our architect and interior designer. The desk in the library is my favorite piece of furniture in the entire house. It was made by Brian Fireman of Tryon, NC. I cannot recommend Brian highly enough - fantastic craftsman. I agree 100% with Fori that restraint is key in designing an arts and crafts home to keep it from looking like a cliched imitation of the real thing. I love each and every one of the kitchens posted by Garden Web members, but some of those others above are just over the top, overdone. Lastly, Powertoolpatriot (the OP): I still have a clipping from the Winter/Spring issue of Style 1900 Magazine that lists the features that "if you choose from these features, you'll end up with a kitchen you won't regret thirty minutes or several years later" at least according to the author of this article (I think it was Jane Powell based on a credit on the other side of the page). Although this topic has been debated ad nauseum on this forum, and I don't agree with all of the list, I'm happy to mail this to you if you will send me your USPS mailing address (my email address is on my member page - yours is not). Good luck and be sure to post your kitchen when it is done (she says shamed faced, not having posted her own kitchen...).

I suppose I should have said, other pieces that distract the eye from the bird lithographs. I'm not saying the other pieces aren't good in their own right, but they are not your prized lithos. The lithos are small and need to be seen as a more compact unit. Because birds are your theme, I still think the other birds (which don't compliment, even though they do relate to the prints,) should be sprinkled around the room. Kind of like sprinkling your accent color throughout a room; the same goes for any themed collections. For example in a display cabinet, you usually place the major matching group together as a focal unit and then judiciously arrange other individual pieces more randomly. Here are some examples of how much attention a tighter grouping demands. If you are unable to square up your lithos without more of them, you might consider where you could hang them vertically like the last photo. Then hang a really large bird print over your sofa to set the theme.

Everdebz, to answer your questions... I don't know how big my dining table is (I haven't seen it in 1.5 years). It seats 6 comfortably or 8 if you crowd the ends. I prefer to keep it to 6. Yes, I am still looking for large scale, abstract, minimalistic art in any colors except red and yellow. I especially like black (if there was a darker color it would be my favorite), grey, dark to medium purple, and dark or rust orange. I'm not a huge fan of whimsical or fantasy. I wouldn't do 3 paintings to make 1 or have something that yells modern cliche to me. I would say I have a thousand dollar taste on a five hundred dollar budget, every time I see some thing I love, I wish it were about half the price. I do understand artists and art dealers need to make a buck but I think my expectations thus far exceed my pocketbook's depth. :)

Thanks, y'all. NT - the gift was from Ann Gibson - Gibsona. Haven't heard from CRACKPOT ANNIE in a very long time. Hope she'll come back to us. Here's the progress I made this afternoon. LOL NANA - guess I'm known as the "cross lady".

Wowee, girl. I hadn't seen your photo site since I left in December and it's obvious you've been on the move like always. Great pieces too! They have that special Slo touch! Is the second piece I see the piece I saw started in Vallarta? You're right! I never would have recognized it. So much color and fun! It's wonderful....but I knew it WOULD be!

Well how nice to have my first cup of coffee w/friends like y'all. I bow in thanks. DAISEY - yes - the second piece is the workshop memory piece. The teacher wanted us to order the tiles through her. She gets them wholesale, but don't know from where. As long as you get the Italian vitreous glass, I don't think it matters what brand. The ones I bought were the Chinese-made ones, and they shatter. KLINGER - w/every visit to Mexico, I come home inspired by their wonderful folk art. Thanks, y'all, for making my morning sweet. Was gone all day yesterday, so hopefully can finish gluing today and grout tomorrow.

I've been grouting on this sucker for two hrs., and had to stop for lunch and a rest. I think this is the worst grouting nightmare I've done except "In Her Cups". Next time I get a bright idea, I'm gonna think ahead to grouting. Hope to finish in about another hr. GEESH - HORRIBLY tedious.

Slow, it's awesome. I can't believe you've done all that since Saturday! Well, I can believe it! After all, it's you! Tell me, how did you get that big cross attached to the substrate? I know how heavy it was so it couldn't have just been glue. . .I can't wait for my surgery so I can have time to play. .I intend to try something "slow-like". Wish me luck! Have a good one!

Wozer - y'all sure know how to make an old lady happy. Thanks a zillion. GIBSONA: I used GE II for the crosses. As I've said b/f, I rarely use GE II, but for special items, it's the only thing that works. Everything else was glued w/Weldbond. My DD likes it so much, she is designing a piece w/three crosses for me to make for her living room. Happy days are ahead. Since I'm on a cross kick, I found a very tall plank (over 5" wide) in the garage yesterday, and cut it and put together - y'all ready for this - a 5" tall cross. Now I gotta figure out what to do w/it. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
