Faux Tile Painting on backsplash???

Anyone had any experience painting a faux "tile look" on a wall? I would like to paint the backsplash to look like rough slate tile. I'm also undecided on colors. My other walls will be pale yellow, countertop is cream and kitchen cabinets are med. oak. Any ideas? I plan on using plaid valances in windows with a warm red, yellow and green.

It's very, very easy. Get some very thin masking tape (it comes in all sorts of teeny-tiny sizes at a good art supply store) and tape off all your grout lines first. The basecoat color UNDER your masking tape will be the grout color, so if you want that to be different than wahatever it is now, paint and let the paint cure before doing the rest. Then tape it off, and paint or sponge away. If you are a complete novice, then the easiest of many ways to make the tiles themselves is probably sponging. One way is to have a few paint trays (say, three or four) with a different color in each. Then start sponging and experimenting till you get the look you want. Pell of the masking and it's beautiful! After it cures, you can varnish or seal it so it's very scrubbable! I have done lots of backsplashes-- they are wonderful and easy! Colorwise, you can find a sample of slate and pull colors from the other things in your room and subtly work them in! Slate has a ton of variety and is extremely forgiving to paint!

Thanks for responding skatiero. We're still peeling the wallpaper off. I have picked out some colors although I'm afraid they may be too dark. But it's just paint, right! Would you buy the flat latex or egg shell paint or use acrylics.If you varnish it afterwards, does it matter if you use flat latex.

I've been checking ebay and most of the 12x12 sheets of glass mosaic tile is running about $14/sq foot. I found the faux tile. Its called Smart Tile Mosaic on the Home Depot website. It's $8/sq foot, but the convenience factor of peel and stick is tempting. I think I will go to HD to look at it in person. It's hard to get the full impact without seeing it in person. I just thought it would be less expensive than $8/sq foot. I may have to try my hand at doing regular 6x6 tile. They come in pretty designs now.

I am planning a small kitchen going in this summer and am having the same debate. For cleanliness, I struggle with no backsplash whatsoever. We slop around too much or someone spills and I am always wiping the countertops back to the backsplash. My painted walls would not hold up. You have a better chance of getting away with it with your prep area and sink on the island. I am going with Cambria and what I like about them is they offer a thin backsplash. I am seriously considering the thin Cambria behind the range and 4" up all the way around. I like the look of the thin backsplashes vs the chunky ones that come with granite. If I do decide to tile it is going to be a simple solid, probably small brick pattern that highlights one of the colors in my Cambria. Palimpsest - interesting idea back painting glass especially behind the range. How did you attach it to the wall?

That looks like the shape of the "ledgestone" product on the lonestarstone website, but seems to have a little less variation in the thickness of the stone (which I like!). Is that the case? Did you get to choose how consistent the thickness was when you ordered? We're looking at eventually replacing a faux brick treatment on our fireplace/oven surround and your look is the kind of think we're hoping for! Thanks for the post!

plugmold - sitting on backsplash, or between backsplash & cabs?

My plug mold is mounted between my cabinets and backsplash at a 45 degree angle. I saw this on someone's posting and showed it to my GC who thought it looked great (it does). He had the cabinet installers rip a piece of maple matching my cabinets at a 45 degree angle and the electricians then mounted the plugmold. I especially like that I don't have to lean under and crane my neck to figure out where the plugs are. This technique also eliminates the knuckle-scraping problems mentioned above. It can also solve some wiring issues because you could fish wire across the back. I have stainless plugmold installed and love the way it looks.

Don't buy expensive wallpaper remover. Hot water works just as well. get a Tiger's claw ( a hand held thing that scores your paper so water can get under it, score, and then soak with hot water. give it time to penetrate then start pulling. Use a sponge. Kinda messy but works great.

Here's a "tile mural" I did behind my stove. I used a store-bought poster and tore it into 4" squares using a ruler so the edges were a little rough. The second picture is my counter, faux painted to look like stone. Should give you some ideas. Both surfaces are several years old, have polyurethane over them and are holding up very well.
