Hello all,

I've been lurking for the past few months and figured it was time to come forward. I have to say I am really inspired by all of you. The information and support you so freely share is incredible.

I attempted a mosaic table a few years ago . . . was less than impressed with the results . . . and haven't touched the stuff since. For about the last year or so I had been itching to try it again and spent a little time trying to actually learn a few things this time around. I became aware of this site and have been a lurker ever since. Felt sorta' creepy . . . I've never "lurked" before!

I've recently started another table and I would love advice and critique. I'm just making this pattern up as I go along (probably not the best idea). As of right now it contains glass tiles, ceramic tiles and a little millefiori. I've attempted to provide a link to my table WIP. Since I've never done this before, here's hoping it works . . .

Welcome! I think your table looks fabulous! Love your sense of color and design and your circles are perfect. Kind of pop art look. Are you sure you haven't done this for years? I'm no expert but I would make sure to read the advice here (if you already haven't) about prepping wood surfaces. Inside should be ok, found out the hard way about mosaiced wood outside. Keep those WIP pics coming!

I have about four or five homestead verbenas planted on the side of my driveway. The area is heavily mulched with cedar mulch. I will admit to not fertilizing them since I planted them. But two years later, they are pretty much the exact same size as when I planted them. Now the first year was the horrific drought of 2007 and then last year, they weren't fertilized. Is that why, they haven't spread like everyone else is suggesting they do? I'll be planting them in an area that is not mulched, it will just be the soil that I bring in. TIA. OOOHH, I like the idea of an annual vine. How would sweet pea do? I always discounted it thinking it would need a trellis. Honestly, the area is so ugly now, that even if I put one measly plant there it would be an improvement. I am not familiar with it, but I would gladly take you up on your offer for some heliotrope starts. Thank you. I'm not familiar with wine cups? And, I thought I remember reading, again no personal knowledge, that the Georgia blue veronica likes to be moist. I was hoping for something, that once established, was more drought tolerant. Cameron (love your blog BTW), I thought about the Creeping thyme but I bought some for my sister last year, (she's in MA Zone 5) and she said that all of them died. But when I look at the pictures of it, I just fall in love with it. Perhaps, I'll look in to that also. I want to thank everyone for their helpful advice and I thank my lucky stars every day for this site. Even if I can't offer advice, I just love reading all the posts when I have the time. Once, I have made my decisions, I promise to update everyone. And now that I have a bit more time on my hands, one in Kindergarten, maybe I'll even do some before and after pics. TY!

Dave, I've been around just more sporadic mixing in work, a heavy off-season softball workout regiment and projects outside have been eating up a lot of my time. That and I feel like I've swamped the boards occasionally with photos and I don't want to become an irritant to some. That grape vine does look marvelous. Highly glossy leaves, great shape and very full. Now my arbor there is in part shade(gets morning and evening sun) and I have two climbing roses and two clematis set to climb it. I'm a bit skeptical about the roses but we'll see. Does that grape vine you have grow with some mixed shade? How long did it take to get it THAT full? Finally, does it have a fall color? I'd be all over it for sure if it did. Spring's on hold again here, a handful of days near freezing and some ice pellets to boot. March can't come soon enough. -Will

I have heard great things about high-fiber diets and cholestorol. Several women in my Weight Watchers meetings have lowered their cholestorol such that they no longer require meds, due to the sensible eating plan and also the high fiber. There are also a lot of foods like oatmeal and cheerios that tout their ability to lower cholestorol. Try keeping a food journal for a few days, and see if you can diary how much fiber is in your daily diet. It can't hurt, and might just do the trick!

More on the dog: The Akita (large dog) is crate trained. We do often confine him to a room when there are guests in other parts of the house. We just aren't willing to do this for our two regular and close friends who don't mind the dog out and about, but just not touching them because we already have a solution we LOVE-LOVE-LOVE (seating in the kitchen with narrow enough entries) They come by too often. We are lazy, we don't want to have to do anything special when they arrive. This must-have design rule brings us too much joy to give up for a lesser solution. We've also now discussed the partial door issue and decided against it too. It will result in this partial door being extended permanently. We are too lazy to move it back and open the area. Really. I'm not kidding. This is just who we are. How do I know this? Mr. Chef pointed out that our opening to the living room is already 5' and we put a kitchen cart there to block it further. The cart never moves. Never. It is just sitting in the living room offering extra kitchen storage and serving the purpose of narrowing the opening to make the dog easier to control. I should probably put this info into a web page. We've discussed this issue in person and on the web for hours with dozens of people. It's human nature to be polite to the first 5 or 10 people who suggest a crate/gate solution, but when the 67th person makes the suggestion, it's harder. The 67th person doesn't realize that you've already discussed this in great gory detail with 66 people before them and rejected it after very deeply considering it and they deserve the same politeness as the 1st. But it's hard. Maybe if I write it up and just point people to the URL explaining it, I can avoid being less than civil about it.

Hi Fellow Lurker! I also started out lurking around in this forum before getting brave enough to ask for help. What a great bunch of people here hey? I have learned sooooo much from these guys and am always in awe of their work. I can't stop reading and looking long enough to say anything. Your table is looking very interesting-keep sending progress reports! And if you're ever in a bind, just come here and do a search! You'll find the answers!

diy: I'm glad you saw the "pop art" aspect - - I was hoping for something along those lines . . .

linlee: sharp eyes you got there. upon further inspection I see that they are not dirty socks (although that would be very likely here) but instead they are my teen daughter's discarded "attempt" at leg warmers! Please tell me those are NOT coming back. Living through the 80's styles once is more than enough!

No critique from me - I think it looks just great! It has a retro feel with the colors and patterns. You've done a good job mixing everything so far, and I'll be looking forward to the next photo installment.

I didn't notice the leg warmers either, but I had to go back and find them once they were brought up. LOL I had a wine colored set back in the day. Hello, my name is Andrea and I'm a child of the 80's.

Senga- That's an EXCELLENT start! You've inspired me to at least TRY to stick to a pattern. I think I'm still in backsplash mode, which isn't to say it isn't WORKING for me, but I gotta branch out.

mosaicwench: the name senga was an inside joke with my dad when I was 12 or 13. It's actually my name, Agnes, spelled backwards.

back to cutting tiles and gluing so I can post more pictures soon!
