Cabinet colour and style quandary
Comments (16)While I LOVE your antique cabinets, if removing them gives you the space for an island with proper aisle widths, do it. The only issue I'm aware of with a DW across the aisle from the sink is dripping on the floor. So the type of flooring you are using may be a consideration. If someone doesn't wipe up any large drips, will it cause spotting on your floor? Or make it slippery so someone would slip? Maybe a nice throw-rug in that area would solve that problem? Just stuff to consider. If there are other problems with that arrangement, hopefully someone pipes in. You may find that with drawers on a all or most of the lowers, you gain enough storage that you don't need all those uppers. Drawers in an island may especially make that difference. We just found that out for ourselves in our slow-going, DIY remodel. We added two 24" drawer units. All the contents for 48" of uppers fit into one of the 24" drawer units. Yes, ALL, with space left over. So we had an entire drawer stack empty until we did some other re-arranging of things (emptied some things from my blind corner, Yay!). Drawers hold so much more stuff. It was rather shocking to me how much more the drawers held. And more convenient to access, too. Because of that, we decided to remove the uppers because they crowded the window and it looks so much better now. We have decided to put narrow 6" shelves there instead of those bulky-looking uppers and go with something like the photo to store some basics like flour, beans, other grains, etc., in jars for easy access, with just a few drinking glasses (as one end of the shelves is near the fridge) and decorative items. Although we will be doing floating shelves to keep the side view uncluttered, because our window is on the long side of the L while the shelves are on the short side of the L so our side view is important. In your kitchen, I think shelves just like pictured would look awesome. To be honest, I'm surprised I'm doing this as I haven't been much of an open shelves fan in kitchens but I think as long as there is uniformity in what you put on them and they are kept relatively uncluttered, it is a good, workable solution. So, yeah, add a real island with drawers and I'm sure you'll find you can eliminate or minimize whatever upper cabinets you really need....See MoreChristmas Wreath Quandary
Comments (31)After a couple of conversations with the Christmas Central CSR, who told me that the Cheyenne wreath was the lushest 36" wreath, I did a little research about LED versus incandescent lights. It's clear to me that for a small scale decoration, incandescent is best because I want soft traditional lighting. Even though LED claims to last tens of thousands of hours, the high price doesn't seem worth it, plus you get those overly bright bulbs which I find unappealing inside my home. Also I "chatted" with online support this morning about the warranty. The warranty, which really covers whether or not the lights work for a certain period of time, is for a three month season, lights on for 6 hours per day. This means that I would be lucky to get two seasons out of the lights and then replace the string. I'm going to order the Cheyenne wreath today, along with an inexpensive storage case that allows you to hang the wreath to keep it fluffy and nice. To keep costs in line, I'm going to decorate the wreath with berries, pine cones, some shatterproof red ornaments, and ribbon this year. Here is a sample of what has taken hours to find in six stores: a burgundy-red grosgrain ribbon (unwired) in two different widths, plus brilliant red wire-edge satin ribbon (I also bought a smaller 2" width), wired gingham and unwired gingham. No checkerboard ribbon but HL did have a cool looking harlequin ribbon. I even went to a specialty ribbon store. I'd prefer not to use burlap looking ribbon because I don't think it will hold up well over the years, but it does lend a very charming look. None of these ribbon spools were from the Christmas ribbons aisle, but instead in the fabric or floral departments of HL and JoAnns. Michaels had a very limited selection of non-holiday red ribbon. It's hard to find a quality wire-edge red ribbon in the Christmas decorations department... there's always a little something extra, like gold or glitter on the edges, or velvety or sheer, red ribbon. The ribbon cost about $4.00 each, including coupons/sales. The little case of berries is from Target: 40 picks for $6, and the deep red ornaments are from Walmart: $3.48. I'm interested in the matte and shiney ones-no glitter. Still looking for brighter red shatterproof ornaments like this deep red/burgundy set, I've found them only in red/green/gold/white assortments, and the other colors are unneeded. Once I receive the wreath, it will be easy to decide what works and return the unused trim. It's all good!...See MoreStyle/type of Sofa (Sectional) would work with a dark brown Recliner
Comments (7)Sometimes it’s hard to have two different learners. If you want to keep the leather love seat then perhaps a fabric sofa or sectional. I’m a fan of sectionals, but ones that have flexibility. Ours is a sofa which chaise plus ottoman. So we can put chaise on either side and use ottoman as part of sectional or as table. It creates flexibility. We haven’t changed it around in two years but I’m glad we have options. Lots of people prefer the sofa look to sectional. It’s really about your space and layout and what works best for your family. I recommend taping out on the floor the options so you can see it better....See MoreCottage kitchen quandary; please help. Comments (18)Are you wanting to put something against the wall between the door and wall behind the ladder -- or stop just before the niche -- so you don't have a blank wall or are you in need of storage space as well as counter space? Have you considered building a "desk" that could, as needed, double as a countertop? Something similar to this: https://www.jossandmain.com/furniture/pdp/hawkes-desk-j000678304.html With a pair of 2-3 drawer (two file drawers and one shallow top drawer) filing cabinets spaced as far apart or as close as you need them to be, you could add a countertop matching your kitchen countertops atop that and have a dual purpose unit. You might consider a floor to ceiling shallow shelving unit but spaced so that at countertop height create a "drop leaf" countertop much like an old fashioned "secretary", with doors or drawers above and below . Or just add a "secretary" style cabinet. https://www.houzz.com/product/121650842-colonial-natural-solid-wood-drop-front-home-office-secretary-desk-transitional-desks-and-hutches https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/storage-case-pieces/secretaires/antique-pine-secretary-desk-from-sweden/id-f_20860672/ https://www.hayneedle.com/product/acmefurniturewyaniesecretarydesk.cfm...See MoreRelated Professionals
