I can't help you about what to do with the wall, but I can tell you if you like something, do it. "Style" be darned! lol. If we all decorated in style, then all of our homes would be identical. :)

Laundry room. All I can think of is all that dust getting stuck to the walls : ( Maybe a smoother plastered look?

I was told a scraper would be used to remove it. I think maybe using a sprayer too.

Well it could be when you pull off the wallpaper it pulls off part of the drywall underneath and would leave you the option to re-drywall, texture, or panel.

My only concern about texturing the bath/laundry is the humidity and if it would hold up as well. If you want to remove the texture- scrape and sand- it is messy and time consuming.

What style of decorating do you have? Would the texture look worth with the rest of your home?

Just my opinion... texturing is one of those things that looks good in photographs but not so good in real life. It's very difficult to do well, collects dust and dirt, and is a royal PITA to change once you've done it.

What is the condition of the wall under your wallpaper?

Since it's just a laundry room and not a public place in your home I'd get out the Elmer's and glue any loose edges. Once that's good and dry I'd paint. I'd never want textured walls. To hard to repair if it gets damaged somehow.

Problem is, texturized walls have been in style for the last several years and it definitely goes against the grain right now to do a flat wall, so does that make it the next trend, will we make that a trend? Hmmmmm....

summerc, please, save yourself or the next owner a lot of trouble and remove the wall paper completely before you texturize or paint or replace the wall paper, whatever. Use a scorer, DIF, and Kiltz (if painting), it really is worth the $.

Texturize or flat wall?: If you have mad DIY skills and can put it up yourself, I would take the chance to texturize, especially in a laundry room. I have struggled with this same question for 3 or so years (my decision is the kitchen)... I've been forced to accept a flat wall and I'm embracing it... I couldn't have done a texturized wall with what I now plan to do with paint. It's a lot less expensive and I can do it all myself.

Before our painting began they asked me if I wanted the walls textured. I said a flat out NO. But everyone convinced me to do it, so I had them do it with the lightest texture possible. And I like it. It's hardly even noticeable unless you get close to the wall, so it won't be collecting anymore dust than a regular wall would. But heavy texture in a utility & bathroom, yeah, I can see the problem.

I'll never forget standing in the shower when we had a popcorn ceiling and bits of it started falling on me from the humidity. lol

Well, I ran into el stubborn paper in my kitchen, by this time I had removed several wallpapered rooms, was sick of it, so I took the joint compound to it. Professional? No. Do I like it? Why, yes I do. Especially when you're doing a laundry that only you are going to see, go for it.

I had wallpaper like that in a room and decided to remove it, but, like a previous poster said, it tore up the sheetrock underneath, so I textured it over all that. And I loved it. So much so, that I textured 4 other rooms. Each room (no, not adjoining) had a different texture - I had fun and it looked great, IMHO.
In fact, I just recently textured my foyer with tissue paper. Looks fabulous! In contrary to an earlier poster, I think texturing can be some of the easiest DIY project you can do. Good luck! :)

I was going to suggest the tissue paper idea. It's subtle and not as messy as spackle. If the peeling wallpaper isn't widespread, you shouldn't have much trouble spot gluing the edges and/or seams and then applying lightly crumpled tissue paper over it. If you ever decided to strip it all, it wouldn't be much more work than the original painted wallpaper would be (which is a pain, don't get me wrong ;-). If the humidity is a problem and you're sure you like the finished product, you could use a higher gloss paint over the tissue or top it with a poly coat.

You can find some good pictures and how to instructions if you google "tissue paper faux finish" or something similar.

We used the Valspar sandwash texture finish in our bathroom. We have a "beach" look, so it works pretty well. We had about 6 layers of paint and wallpaper, so there was no way that could be removed. The next reno will involve removing the walls. The contractor said to go for the texture since that's really the next step. This remodel was just a moderately expensive refresh and not meant to be a 30-year solution.

Couple of caveats:
The sandstone paint is very messy to use. It sprays all over. I even used the exact expensive roller recommended for it. You need to wear safety goggles to avoid getting the texture crystals in your eyes.

It has to cure a week before you apply two coats of polyurethane, so if this is your only shower/tub, it's a bit tricky to plan where to shower. The poly also intensifies the color a bit.

A friend of mine used the spray texture from HD it worked really will for his project. I bought some and am going to try it when I remove my kitchen wallpaper. Not sure how messy but worth a try. I too textured by bathroom with joint compound found it pretty easy to do professional looking probably not but it is the master bath and DH and I are the only ones who use it.

There's obviously some misconceptions floating around about textured walls. I've lived with them most of my life and have never found them to be dust collectors nor does the amount of humidity in the room affect any of the textures. Also, patching a textured wall is much easier than a flat wall since you can hide the patch with the texture.

There are many different textures and what's popular depends on where you live. A few types are skip-trowel, knocked down, orange peel, and of course the sand and acoustical (popcorn). Personally, I wouldn't want the sand because it's so difficult to change and remove from the wall and I would never choose the popcorn.
My current home has orange peel on the walls and knock down on the ceilings.

Here's a little trick I've used to add a very light texture to walls. Apply an oil primer using a thick roller. (If you leave the wallpaper you'll need to do this anyway)
After applying the primer, do one final, light, roll-over with very little paint on the roller and you'll end up with a fine orange-peel texture. Followup with your favorite paint.
Others here have gotten the same effect by mixing a slurry of drywall compound and putting it on the wall with a thick textured roller.

I'm going to just say "yeah.......what she said!" to Annz' comments. I have knockdown everywhere in my house. Most homes here have knockdown texture. It looks good, paints well and doesn't collect anything. Now, if you're talking about the 'popcorn' texture on the ceiling, that's another story. Do not do that.

I'm feeling very en vogue right now, since DH texturized our garage walls a couple years ago. You may not be able to tell with the picture, I actually took it last summer to show of the floor he'd just epoxied (THAT gets more notice than anything!)

I have textured walls (far more than knockdown or orange peel) in most of my rooms. The texture is fabulous as is the finish. They do not collect dust, and they're easier than any other texture to patch (because it's just random textures). Mine were done professionally, but I've seen them done by amatuers and they still can look lovely. My walls are often the first thing that people comment on when they come to the house. They all want me to show them how :)

The only issue with the joint compound idea (verses real plaster) is that it can crack when drying (allagator type look) so you should do it in layers. It's really better done with a real cement mixture especially in wet areas (which your laundry room would be considered) but you could also seal with oil based paints and that might take care of the problem. Don't paint until the walls have dried over a week.'

You might also encounter the problem of wall paper pulling off the wall when you add the weight of joint compound or traditional plasters. My pro guy wouldn't do it on a painted wallpaper wall...he removed the paper first. He said he once experienced a finish that pulled and does not ever want that kind of a mess again.

Dust will stop on anything and everything. Smooth walls will collect a layer of dust over the years. When you say textured I'm not thinking popcorned but wasn't thinking a smooth texture either. What type are you considering? Smooth plastered look? Stucco'd type look? Troweled look?
