I'm thinking about texturing the walls in my laundry/bathrm....

Right now there is wallpaper that has been painted over in there. In most places it looks pretty good & is not noticeable that there is wallpaper there, but in a few spots, it is crumbling & curling at the edges. I don't really want to try to get all that off, so I've been thinking that I want to use spackling compound to texture the walls. Dh is concerned that in the future I won't like it, it will be out of style, etc. etc., & he is worried about what it would take to get it back to a smooth normal wall. What do you all think about this? Will it go out of style soon? Is it worth the pain now to remove the wallpaper, so I can save myself the pain later of having to put up new sheetrock? What would you do???
