Want to keep my floors pretty.

We are getting Bella Cera hickory wood floors installed next week. I already have big rubber saucers under the grand piano legs, and know we will need felt pads under DR chairs, but what about stationary furnitrue like the china cabinet, couches, Grandfather clock, etc. Do they need pads under them too. I've looked some pads up on line and they are quite expensive, so I don't want to go overboard, nor have my couch slide out from under me when I sit. What do you recommend?

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the china cabinet or clock, but I would definitely get something for the sofa. I feel like sofas get pushed around a lot. I just had some really thick felt (almost the texture of a short pile carpet) pads under the legs of my sofa in my old house. They protected the floor very well, and make it easier to scooch the sofa around for cleaning, parties, etc...)

Most all of our furniture has either rubber saucers or felt pads. The rest of the spaces aren't protected from everyday use. We have 2 dogs, at one point, had 3 and the contractor who laid the hardwood nearly had a stroke when he finished and I let the dogs into the house without restriction. We live in our home, so there's no way to totally protect them in showroom style without putting up velvet roping. I think the floor guy would have preferred that over the dogs running across the newly laid floors!

I have allergies to cats and dogs. I have two cats, and two dogs. I am worse with the dogs, than the cats. Big guy gives me hives when I hug him. If I play with them on the floor, cats or dogs, and haven't vaccumed that day, I am doomed for the rest of the day. Can't breath, sneeze til I bleed..etc etc. Anyways, I control it by A)Vacuuming with a vacuum with a hepa filter in it. And maintaining the hepa filter. B) No animals in the bedroom, EVER. Big guy goes in and out every day, to get to his room, but no prolonged visits. C) I have an airpurifier in my bedroom, with a hepa filter, right beside my side of the bed. This prevents the dander from attacking me in my sleep. D) No animals on the furniture. I notice a huge difference when I stay at peoples houses with pets, that don't keep up as much. Theres a few things you can do, based on severity. If the allergies aren't that bad, just make sure you keep up after the kitty. Making the dander around the house minimal. And make it more desirable for kitty to be upstairs most of the time. Spend lots of time upstairs with the cat, keep all food/toy/litterboxes upstairs. Make it so the cat doesn't really desire to be downstairs all that often. If there is really no option but to have the cat upstairs, and a door isn't feasible you can always try a product called ssscat. It has a motion detector that will spray when the cat gets near. You could place it at the top or bottom of the stairs. If there are other pets or small children however, it may be a bad idea to use it. And if kitty is brave or doesn't scare easily, it might not be that effective for too long. After all, curiosity killed the cat.

I might go a tad lighter than my last virtual. Personally, I'd do a sample board of JG's color. Putting a color up in large scale on a house can look so different than a small sample. Even the pros can't be sure what will happen. Since you can already see a done deal with the Cypress, and how pretty it looks on an exterior in real life, it's a safer bet, I think. It's a good starting point. From there you may know whether you want warmer, darker, lighter, more sage-y, etc. Or, maybe green won't be for you! Once you select your color, you can also just try it on the front of the house and see how you like it, before committing to the whole thing. Are you hiring out (expensive) or doing this yourself (easier to repaint if you don't like it)?

Oh, I love the sophisticated look of Peace Lilies. Although I'm not very knowledgeable on everything you mentioned, I do know that if it is cold you could try to push it through till spring to repot her, if it's still warm and it's only starting to cool up, repot her for the winter. If she has a bloom, it seems like she's really liking the care! I have my Peace Lilies in regular potting mix and I don't let them droop too much before I water them. If she has root rot, I'd pick up some fungicide, spray it on the root ball, repot her, rinse her down and give it a nice soaking and wait till the soil dries. This usually works for me, you just have to keep checking on the roots and the general look of the plant. Others will give you more experienced information, but good luck!

Ahhh Cori Ann, I share your enthusiasm; the late fall flush is so nice to observe especially after a late summer hammering by CLM! I use a combination of sprays, powders, shovels, guns, and an assortment cloths, lamps and screens (for freezes). - that is - when I can get to it. Some of it works only some of the time so I may just shut the windows and not look until February. BTW: if your Meyers are not pushing new growth of a pretty, dark reddish-tint color (during the main growing sessions), they are not getting enough food.

I put felt pads on everything, because at some point you will want to clean behind large/heavy furniture or need to move things to paint a room.

Accept that they will get wear and tear. We had hardwood floors redone before moving in and we had cardboard moving boxes in the house for a while. It is amazing how a cardboard box will really scratch a wood floor. DS1 decided to block DS2 front entering his room by moving a full box in front of his door ... I have a beautiful wide scratch were the box was pushed across the room! :-0

I agree with putting felt pads on everything. There are lots of times when I wanted to move a larger piece of furniture (ie china cabinet) without having to empty it. Enjoy your floors!

We have felt pads under everything as well. We also leave our shoes at the door. I've always been a barefoot kind of girl but DH wears slippers inside. I also only clean the floors with a solution of water and a little alcohol to make it dry faster, no harsh chemicals. Congrats on your new floors, I'm sure you're going to love having them!

We started out using felt pads on every piece of furniture either the nail in or sticky backed, but recently found a brand that not only protect your hard surface floors, but allows for easy moving when you need the piece of furniture to more by angling the piece. Until we used these our chairs, which have their front legs on an area rug, slid backwards whenever we sat down.

We also have felt pads on every piece of furniture, china cabinets, etc. included. There will be a time when you move them.
