I used cushionsource.com I think the cover is well made and it has a zipper closure and double box cording on the edges. It took about 2 weeks before it shipped. They have quite a few fabric samples to choose from.

Thanks Red. I think it came out well. I see where my seat testing has left some wrinkles. I should have smoothed it before the picture.

I chose the 3 inch thick foam, which I think is pretty good for a windowseat. 4" may have been too high.

Did you use the 15" high x 24" deep over-the fridge cabinets? Looks good!

I think you picked just the right height. Four inches would have been to high. It looks perfect! You hubby did a great job with the cabinetry too. I've always wanted a window seat, but have never had one.

That is very clever using the kitchen cabinets in that way. I'll have to keep this in my file of ideas, if I ever need it. The window seat looks great.

ajsmama - we used 2 over-the-fridge cabinets and they were 36" wide and 12" deep. The dimensions of the window seat including the framing ended up 76" long by 18.5 deep. They were from Lowes Kitchen Classics

How high are the cabinets? I was thinking 15" plus your 3" cushion would be 18" which is just about right for a bench?

ajsmama - The height including the cushion is 24" It's a comfortable height for a teen's room.

The cabinet height is only 14", but they were built up with a framed base and then there is a finished top across both cabinets.

Beautiful job with both the window seat and the cushion. It looks like a great place to set back and enjoy the view, or for seating when all the friends come to visit. Your daughter must be delighted with her new seating!!

I've been dreading making a cushion with really nice fabric for our laundry room bench (also from over-refrigerator cabs)(not chi-chi fabric but really tough gorgeous designer fabric from one of the online places)...I mean *dreading* getting it wrong, lined up wrong, etc...and now I've found where I will get it done! with Customers Own Material it's such a fair price, and you have shown that they do good work and are good to deal with. I have always wanted to make window seats out of kitchen cabinets. Saw the idea on HGTV many years ago. We have the perfect spots for two seats in our bonus room dormers.

Thanks for showing/sharing all your information. For a cushion that size, under $200 is a great price. I've made chair cushions w/cording, and it was not much fun.

nhb - Please share your window seat if you decide to build one. I know what you mean about making your own cushion not being much fun. When our kids were very young we had a house with a raised hearth and I made a cushion to protect the falls. It was a lot of work and didn't really look that great.

nellie - thank you for asking about the vinyl planks. I love them for kids rooms. This is the second room we've done. They are so practical and spills and dirt are so easy to clean up. I am not concerned about resale, we can carpet over them if needed.


After the carpeting is ripped up the floors have to be level. Wood filler was used on the plywood subfloor seams, then sanded, and then a primer product was rolled onto the entire floor to help with leveling. Then the vinyl planks went on very easily. I will say that this room does have a few planks where the edges are not adhered as well as they should be. We are going to put a bar bell weight on those areas to see if we can get them to stay down. It is just a few of the planks. The other room we did does not have any edges coming up.

itsawrap, i want to thank you again for posting your gorgeous cushion. It motivated me to get off my behind and get the cushion "done"...I ended up finding a local person on c's list who is a great expert like chelone (in fact their tastes are similar--if I didn't know chelone lived on the east coast I might have asked her if they were the same person!) who has lost several of her commercial contracts, e.g. for yacht companies and designers, because of the recession. I saw her portfolio (and her house, which is also her showroom)...her price was *more than reasonable* (read about 1/3 of the final price of the online site) and I'm supporting a local talent (in my own small way)! Can't wait to get the cushion back next week. So your project has now had a little g'web inspiration-baby :)
