Aren't window seats just so romantic? Think of lounging on a sunny ledge and reading while the summer days idle away. In designing a window seat, comfort is very important, but it can also provide ample storage or accentuate the architectural elements of the home.
This gorgeous modern version of the window seat is a clever example of building out, if a ledge to build one into does not exist. Minimalist design, rich wood detailing, extra storage below and lighting above make for a lovely little nook.
This extravagant window seat in a children's room provides plenty of area to play and read. The massive shelves on both sides can store as many toys and books as any child could desire. I like the traditional style of the seat and shelves coupled with the mod seating and light fixture.
Storage, storage, storage. Don't waste the space underneath the seat itself. This is great for storing winter blankets or toys.
Even more storage. Drawers below, cabinets and shelves all around for one very generous built-in unit.
This multi-tiered area in a study was well thought-out to both provide seating and a window ledge to serve as a display area.
Use a window seat to celebrate the architecture of your home, as this large bay window does.
Or carve out a seat in a cramped attic space where a slanted roof limits your floor seating options.
You don't see this often: a his and hers seat with storage built all around, for when you want to be side by side but not together all the time. Haha.
What a nice thought: a window seat in a nursery where you can nurse your baby to sleep and point out the world outside when the baby is awake.
A very inventive way to create a Zen seating area for tea ceremonies.The homeowners may have adapted the existing window seat to their cultural needs, which is a beautiful way to repurpose.
Another unusual design for a window seat: curvy to mimic the window's footprint, and raised on legs. Darling and special indeed for an eating nook.
If you can't figure out a way to build out a window seat, or live in a rental and don't want to commit, a bench near a window creates a makeshift version with the same effect.

Window seats look so inviting. We're thinking of using them to flank our fireplace without any windows. 5'-6" wide x 32" deep on each side means a child could sleep on both sides with a comfortable cushion. Plus if you are having a party, it is extra seating or a place to put purses and gifts, etc. If you don't want a typical fireplace wall full of cabinets, shelves and clutter, this is an option. You can still have a grand mantel on the fireplace itself and woodwork panels on the wall above the benches.
