Need help with black/white bathroom...

I have an old cottage in a nice historical district. It has a great small hall bathroom with 3" white hexagon tile with 1" black tile diamonds at every corner of the white tile on the floor and white tile around the tub area with a small black tile border. The walls are white beadboard half way up. There is a pedestal sink, toilet stool on one wall and tub with shower on the other wall with one window opposite the door.

I need help with a color for the upper walls above the beadboard. I tried yellow but not sure I like it. I also need a curtain suggestion for the window and a shower curtain. I looked at toiles but not sure that is right. What color looks good with black/white tile? Painting the upper walls white is not what I wanted, I would like to have some color...

Mollie, it sounds like you have the perfect bathroom bones to go with any color your heart desires. My guess is you may have the wrong yellow. Is there anyway you can share pictures? If you have a photobucket or flickr account you can copy and paste the html code into your message here and it will show up once you preview your message.
As for window have you thought of window film? You can get it in lacey or other looks. It will allow light in, but also provide privacy.
I'll wait to see if you can post pix before I look for a shower curtain suggestion. Besides it's time to get dinner in the oven.

Lately I've been loving black and white toile with crisp apple green.

Thanks, everyone! Here are some pictures (in Picasa). I'm going to paint, but other than that, everything on the walls is going to stay; were just doing the floor/shower tile and - while we're at it - replacing toilet, vanity and shower door. Jane, thank you for the input. I should have posed my question a bit clearer. I need help with metal for lighting, faucets, etc. I'm looking for suggestions for the entire (overall) look of the bathroom. At first I was going with polished nickel, but the faucet I want to use (Delta/trinsic) does not come in polished nickel. The light fixtures I Iike only come in polished nickel and not chrome. It's just so frustrating. I thought I could do mixed metals, but unsure of that too. I read a number of folks say don't mix polished nickel and chrome. I was thinking matte black, but nervous. My husband won't go for brass (after posing my above question), though I agree, it would be interesting. Thank you again, and if you have any other thoughts, I'd greatly appreciate them. The double vanity is 80" (white), there will be a free standing tub (white), with separate shower in white subway tiles, the quartz counter tops are a medium gray, dark slate floors, and lastly white walls. It's so hard for me to use my imagination and picture different metals in the space.

Art that doesn't take itself too seriously. and embrace it for now. It's funky...as much as checkerboard allover makes me slightly dizzy, I see the bigger problem in the layout. I'd save and research meanwhile. Plants are always good. If you ask me. I can see one on the tub edge. Something.. simple in care. I do see something Alice-in-Wonderland-y in there. I don't mean a theme. i mean-the vibe. If I see a metaphor in a space-it helps me a lot to connect to it, with all its mistakes and shortcomings. So. Maybe what you need for now, while waiting and planning for the big remodel-is finding your own metaphor?

I agree with the apple green walls and black toile shower curtain suggestion.

I also like red walls with a plain white shower curtain. Good Luck!

Mollie, your bathroom sounds really terrific. Peach walls would be dreamy -- especially a pale peach. Have you looked at our Bathrooms thread and our Cottage Decor threads in our Gallery? Hundreds of pretty photos there to inspire you and give you good ideas.

Mollie -- our kids bathroom is also black and white, except we don't have the beadboard (yet!). We have the same black and white hexagonal tiles, and a white furniture style vanity with a marble top. Our trim is white. We had the same difficulty as you in picking another color, so we still have white on the walls. But, I have lately been thinking of a very pale gray, just enough to contrast with the white trim and bring out the veining in the vanity top.

We have two shower curtains right now. One is a black/white paisley pattern (darker), and the other is another B/W pattern. Can't decide which one to use yet.

Our daughter had a historic home in Savannah and redid her hall bath in apple green with black and white tile and fixtures. I think it looked great.

I love green w/ black and white but you can do anything in there and it would look great! Anything that you're leaning towards in particular? Do you want to tie it in w/ other rms.?

Your bathroom sounds vintage inspired, so a robins egg blue would look very pretty with the black and white. Also, a pale blue green like BM Quiet Moments.

I have black & white tile and white trim in my little bathroom-- I used BM Beach Glass and it looks great.
The apple green is beautiful, maybe I'll do that next :)
