My latest find - an unexpected gift from a friend !

When I was dropping off my daughter at her friend's house for a playdate today, the mother gave me a lovely pie crust table for my living room. She said it did not go with her decor (true as her house is more contemporary) and she'd had it since before she got married and thought it'd go perfect in mine--which it does! Several months ago squirrelheaven had PS'ed in a little pie crust table, but I'd all but abandoned the idea as my LR didn't really need it--but it's just darling and the icing on the cake. I offered to pay for it, but she declined--though I think I will do something special for her later.

Oh Cassie it sounds like you are in trouble! Cichlids are potentially large fish, and they are agressive. The good news is that most fish dont grow larger than their environment will allow, although this is not always true. I recomend you try to narrow the 10 you have down to 2 or 3 especially in a 10gal tank. This type of fish is very territorial, and depending on the breed, they sometimes pair up into a mating pair and reproduce like crazy...convicts are notorious for this. I had 3 of them and they had a new fry about every 3-4 weeks. Breeding makes them even more territorial and agressive. Cichlids need a place to hide...they like lots of plants (get plastic ones...they tend to dig up and rearrange live ones) and lots of rock "caves". They will stake claim to their "territory" and defend it, especially if there are eggs or fry. I don't know about any fish-specific rescue associations, andI am from OH, so I don't know anything about LA, but I recently had to get rid of very large oscar that came with a fish tank someone gave to me. He was too big for the tank (about 8") and not compatible with the other fish that were also in this tank. There is a nationwide organization called "freecycle" where you can GIVE AWAY anything that is unwanted and now "Oscar" has a new home in a 75 gal tank where he will be much happier. The man who took him is knowledgeable about fish and aquariums and I know he will take good care of "Oscar". You can find a Freecycle in your area at www.freecycle.org. On a side note....why did your friend get you so many fish for such a small tank?? Sounds like he isnt much of a fish person and not much help in this situation. Good luck.

you are welcome.. the trick is in the latin name ... Pinus clausa .. is a species of pine.. all pine species have huge potential .... easy to google just that part ... to see link ... as you can see.. the babes in the pic here.. has a habit that is substantially dwarf.. comparing such .... and that is why we get excited about them ... frankly .. psst.. dont tell the rest.. i cant tell one pine from another.. but i can surely see the difference ... if it had been a 'named cultivar' .... such as P. clausa 'ritmatt' .. the quote part of the name.. would be your first clue.. its somehow different that the species ... and selected for its uniqueness ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

Glad all of you enjoyed seeing it too. It's such a neat addition to my cherub collection, Karen really does know my tastes so well and is so thoughtful and generous. I think it will take up residence in my bedroom for awhile, it's too pretty to pack away for a year! Thanks for the compliments on the tablescape--I enjoy doing it, but still am not truly confident about it--just try things until I think it looks good. OA, by all means feel free to use any ideas you like. I saw your pretty Valentine's table this morning and wondered why I didn't remember to use my rose petals on mine like you did on yours! LOL Lynn, the tablecloth was another "treasure shopping" find several years ago--less than $5 and it is pretty heavy and really larger than I need for this table, but I love the way it looks hanging down longer over the sides--sort of more romantic I think. LOL Thanks for the compliments on the painted placemats. That was just a "spur of the moment" idea that came to me for something to paint on while we were on a motorhome trip. I liked how they came out and really meant to find more to paint other things on--but haven't done so yet. I'm the world's worst procrastinator! LOL Happy Valentine's Day everyone. Luvs

Magpie,I hadn't even thought about using those candleholders for anything other than making a pedestal. However, I have seen them painted up like snowmen or santas--or I could paint a couple acorns on them I guess. I only have red chargers, so these very inexpensive white ones seemed like something fun to "play" with while doing tablescapes. Jay, that's neat that you found a bowl in the same design--these say Gibson on the back. I like your idea of the candy stash! LOL I have used wreaths for centerpieces before like you suggested Lynn and Jane. Not so sure about using this one that way--think the little twiggy parts stick out too far, and the flowers don't go all the way around. Jane, I'm still seeing the picture there, wonder why you couldn't see it????? Jeanne, I don't know which of us is more blessed, me or my new friend! She is amazing and such a good rolemodel for me, she has MS and just fights it tooth and nail--is painting her bathroom and getting ready to hang wallpaper--maybe being around her will get me to stop procrastinating and get something done--if she can do all that, then I sure have no excuse! It is beautiful this new table and is perfect for your space! What a nice friend who realized how much better this beautiful table it would go in your home.

By the way, your hardwood floors are so pretty. What wood species and what finish do they have? I love the color variation in your flooring adn the red, orange, tan and brown tones.

lynn: My floors are 3" rift & quartersawn (select & better) red oak with a natural oil based poly. We put them in last year. We love them.

Maybe she's been reading the threads on de-cluttering on the Organizing the Home forum. You could bake her a pie with a pretty crust and write a nice thank you note. She had a good eye to see where it really belonged in the world.

valinsv, It looks like I love rift and quartersawn red oak floors since my client has this also. The quartersawn cut really makes a nice floor and I like how their is some color variation but the floor is still elegant. I guess the Gunstock cheap oak engineered floor that came in my foyer areas in my townhouse complex and the cheap veneer oak cabinets that gave me in the kitchen made me think I did not like oak. If I could have solid wood floors, your floors is what I finally realize I want.

Thank you everyone for all the lovely compliments. I agree it was so very thoughtful and DH would've never agreed to another piece of furniture for this room. I love the idea of a thank you pie! I think she would appreciate the significance of it as well. She said she used to have my style before marriage, but after marriage she and her DH bought a more contemporary home and have furnished it that way. I asked her again if I could pay her for the table, but she declined and in fact, gave me a picture as well. I'm thinking of inviting the family over for a barbecue dinner next weekend so she can see it place and our husbands can get to know one another better. She is a very creative person herself and has sewn many furnishings throughout her home. It always fun when you find a friend in the parent of your child's friend...
