Stainless Steel mini-brick backsplash

I found this photo on the Crown Point Cabinetry site and I love the look of the stainless steel mini-brick backsplash above the cooktop. I especially like it with the metal range hood. I'd think it would be more practical than tumbled marble backsplash.

Has anyone done this type of backsplash - any pics to share? Our hood will be covered with panelling to match our white cabinetry - do you think this type of backsplash will look odd if I don't have a metal range hood? Is there a need to grout it - or do you think it's just a sheet of metal with grooves to make it look like tile?

I usually don't care for anything stainless steel. But that backsplash looks hot!

I've seen the mini SS tiles at the tile store- very very expensive- around $70 a sq ft I think? I'm assuming you grout them- they come on a sheet like most small mosaics.

Gorgeous though- I do love the look- and I'm not a big SS fan usually!

thanks to some of you for your insight. The Z-brick isn't at all the look i am going for... There are VERY tasteful brick backsplashes and walls out there now- I am into the rustic/historical brick look- not the old fashioned red/pink brick look. My original ? was if anyone has experience and can it be cleaned easily. I know the look I want just nervous about for ex. spaghetti sauce splashing on it and getting on the grout forever!! ;)

If you were going to use it as a countertop, I'd say yes, consider scratches as an imminent aspect of the finish. But as a backsplash? Not that many scratches. We've had our stainless backsplash behind the stove since 2004 and no scratches yet. It still cleans up beautifully and makes me smile. Honestly, I wouldn't have wanted anything else there, except maybe glass, but I'd have been more worried about that from a temperature point of view. We do have sicis waterglass on the rest of the backsplash, and I'll tell you I haven't had any scratching there, either!

It's VERY VERY hard to clean grease out of the textured surface of even a sealed brick. Or spaghetti sauce. Or anything else that makes a mess. This is a look for someone who does not cook. Or else who lines the alcove in stainless. Or allows it to develop a "patina" of stains so as to darken and age naturally like an old chimney flue. And even for half brick, you're talking a lot of weight, which will need a brick ledge or steel lintel for support. That has to be calculated into your foundation needs. And it will have to be a LARGE alcove to give you enough room around the stove in order to have a safety spot for landing hot pots. You want at the very minimum 15" to both sides of the range, and 24" is better. If you choose a 48" range, that means the alcove should be around 96" in order to give you the safety and room around it that you need. That's a pretty big kitchen that can deal with something like that visually. It's totally dominating. Most smaller suburban kitchens do not have the room to do this, either in wall length or the ceiling height. Trying to do it in a small space just leaves it overpowering the space.

Kathy, I am sure the picture will help get some additional suggestions. You have a very nice space but it is darker (like mine!) and I think a few other items to lighten it up would help here. It looks like your cabinets are hickory. In addition to a backsplash, may I suggest some new rugs that have no pattern or motifs in them? You have a lot of grain (and I think it is beautiful) but you need something solid in spots to break it up. I think your your instinct to stay away from any orange or red color is good. Some solid dish towels are a little but nice inexpensive touch too. Lastly, is it possible to add a light over the kitchen sink to give you more light, particularly at night? You already have under-cabinet lighting and that is good here. I am not so good at picking colors or tile materials myself. I just made a big mistake in a bath myself. I would say you need to use a light cream tile as others have suggested.

Martha- haha...I know. Hot is completely the appropriate word!! And somehow it works with the more simple white cabinetry in the photo and traditional faucets.

Another place I've seen it...not sure how many of you watch The Hills on MTV. But their kitchen also has the stainless steel backsplash (could only catch a glimpse of it though). The Hills is very trendy, so perhaps a it's a new thing!

ooooooooh, I love both those shown!!! too bad I'm already done....next kitchen, maybe? Very fun, I hope someone here uses one of these!

Ooo la la...I like this one. I am seriously considering them for our kitchen!!

Again, anyone know about whether grout should be used for these type of tiles? I am seriously considering them as I love the mini-brick look for a focal point above the cooktop, but am worried about the staining of tumbled marble, and don't like the look of glass.
