Comments (2)If I were you, I'd give up the idea of using magnetic stainless as a backsplash. It will corrode much more readily than non-magnetic stainless, which sort of defeats the whole purpose, doesn't it? Besides, spices should be stored in a cooler place than a range backsplash. I suggest you look for a 300 series "austenitic" type of stainless steel sheet. 304 is a standard, out of which most flatware is made (it's 18-8 stainless). An even higher grade is 316, or 317. Any competent sheet metal shop/fabricator should be able to procure and cut to shape a stainless steel panel for your purposes. You could ask them to give one side a high polish or other desirable finish like brushing, as well, if that's important to you. It will be less expensive if the shape you request has all straight sides - that way a mechanical shear can be used to cut the work. Right angles, even better. If you really want spices stored on the backsplace, specify a stainless shelf to be installed at a convenient height. It needn't be that deep, as most spice bottles take up only an inch or two of space....See MoreStainless Steel backsplash?
Comments (3)We designed our own ss mosaic for the 1st 6" of our backsplash, and then used ss mosaic sheets up the rest of the wall. I think it might still be visible in the picture archives under AnnaA's kitchen. If not, let me know and I will relearn how to post pics. (= We are so happy with our choice. Everytime I shine it up and turn on our undercab lights in the evening, it just shines and makes me happy. Have fun choosing....See MoreQuilted stainless steel for backsplash?
Comments (8)Tell me more! Why wouldn't you want it in your house? I figured it'd look like stainless steel tiles, no? We were planning to go with these tiles: http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/202275407?productId=202275407&storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&cm_sp=BazVoice%2d%5f%2dRLP%2d%5f%2d202275407%2d%5f%2dx I was hoping we'd found something that looks the same, but no gaps (although those tiles don't require grout) Here is a link that might be useful: Stainless steel tiles whose look I'm trying to mimic...See MoreConstruction adhesive behind stainless steel backsplash a must???
Comments (17)Thanks again all for the replies. Things did not work out as planned, but maybe it's for the better. The helper showed up late, so I tried to look at the task myself. Decided to cut the caulking out between the wall and the countertop behind the cooktop. It allowed me to insert the backsplash downward enough for me to muscle the entire backsplash in place from under the hood. I preemptively shaved some drywall off where the gap is smaller than the thickness. Glad that I did because although I did it with the intention of trying out/dry fitting, I ended up having a hell of a time to back it out. Actually, it was so hard that I gave up. So, I simply brought the top forward to give me enough room to squeeze some adhesive in. Due to the awkward access, I just did snake pattern. BTW, the bottom two screw holes are behind the countertop and not accessible. The top two screw holes are so close to the hood and cabinets that I simply cannot go straight in. And when I tried, they were not hitting studs anyway, and I can't get the drywall anchor in. So, I'm mostly relying on the adhesive now to hold the backsplash. That's it. No removal in the future! When the helper finally arrived, he was surprised to see that I already finished installing the backsplash....See Morebreezygirl
