How to make polished nickel hinges look like brushed nickel
Comments (5)Thanks for the Scotch Brite idea. Since my post here, my DH heated the hinges with a torch until they were red, then when they cooled down, they were gray matte color. I believe that the heat took off the protective coating as well as the nickel plating and just left the original steel hinge. Some of the hinges had blue or rainbow areas around the edges, so he heated them up again, thinking that maybe all the finish wasn't off in those areas. I haven't seen them after the second heating, but he says the rainbow look is blue now. That led to another problem though...evidently they had brass pins in the hinge, and three of them melted. So...he had to drill out the brass and is now looking for some tiny rods to weld back on the hinge (at least I think that's what he said :) So...in light of all this, do you thing I can still brush them with the green pad for the finish? Should I now spray them with the acrylic matte coating to keep them from rusting since the other coating has been heated away? Thanks so much for your help. Comments (11)Thanks everyone! If you look at the unbrushed light you'll see it takes on the yellow hue of my cabinets and wall paint. The original finish was so shiny and mirror like, it reflected everything. NOT what I wanted. The brushed finish is truly silver and lovely. @brickeyee, I did notice that when I brushed the top curved part, after a while it would take on the red color of the abrasive ball. Perhaps the plating was thinner there? It was in an inconspicuous spot. After that I took care to brush a little lighter. @fouramblues and redlover I saw the exact pendants on shades of light ($319 each) and found them much cheaper on Bellacor ($220). They are a few inches smaller though, but the larger ones are too big for island pendants IMO. The cage part on mine are about 11W x 14H, add about 6H for the curved part. Bellacor also carries the larger size for $309. Oh and I saved 10% by using the code CAP10 so they were actually $198 each. If you look at the site they have 4 on clearance for $121.97!!!! That wasn't offered when I bought mine and I would have been all over that!!! It says re clearance items.....Find the biggest mark-downs in Bellacor's Clearance Center. Items have been returned and inspected/verified to be in new condition. Due to the substantial price reduction that is offered through the Bellacor Clearance center, items purchased on clearance are not returnable. Product warranties may apply; contact us for complete details. Worth a look. Here is a link to the pendants.... Comments (7)I took some pics of the three pulls I am mainly considering. One is in PN b/c that is all they had and the other two are brushed nickel. After looking at them, I think I might be ok with the brushed nickel. Here are all three. Bottom is obviously the polished one. It is the one I thought I would like the best too, until I got them all installed (this is in my current mudroom, not future kitchen--cabinets aren't installed yet). The top is Jeff Alexander Belcastel, second is a Hickory pull that looks very similar to JA Bremen and last is JA Tiffany. I think I like Belcastel! I thought I might avoid the squarer look b/c my pendants are rounded, but I think it is my favorite. Here is a view of the two I like the best. Would love opinions....See MoreHelp! brushed nickel or oil rubbed bronze hardware in my kitchen?
Comments (12)Is there a reason to buy the hardware before cabinets and counters are installed... then you can buy a sample of orb and nickel (... or, and chrome) hardware you like, and hold them up to your cabinets in your kitchen to select the finish you like best with your other choices? we spent a week or two at the very end of our remodel opening the drawers and doors from the edges (without handles/knobs/hardware), while we ordered samples, picked our final hardware from the samples, then waited for the whole kitchen hardware order to be delivered. It was not a big deal to use the kitchen with bare doors for that time......See Morelattegirl1
