I used semi-gloss on my cabinets and it's perfect. My neighbor painted gloss on her trim and it's funky looking. I don't like it at all...way too shiny.

The trim, doors, bathroom cabinets, etc. in our house are painted in a high gloss oil paint. It looks nice, but I think a semi-gloss seems to be more up to date - at least in my area, so as we've repainted trim, we've been doing it in a latex semi gloss. I like the look of the semi gloss better, but my husband likes the high gloss. You might want to try using Cabinet Coat paint for cupboards. It goes on like an oil paint (self-leveling) but it is latex. You can read about it on the paint forum. I paited our bathroom cabinets in it a couple years ago and they came out really nice.

Woops, I hit submit by mistatke, but meant to add that the Cabinet Coat paint is supposed to be more durable which is why we used it. If I remember right, it only comes in one sheen which is a semi-gloss. If you do try it, you should read about it on the paint forum first because it goes on a little differently - you can't keep going over the same spot as much as with other paint but it will level out where you don't see the brush strokes.

I'm old fashioned so I like gloss for woodwork when it's not oil based. But in today's paint world, good paint in semi gloss is as strong as the gloss so either will work.

Be sure to use a bond's and seals primer prior to painting in a latex if you have oil based paint already. If you don't, all of your hard work will go to heck because when the paint dries....you can literally peel it off like fruit leather. Don't ask how I know that....

All my trim is semi gloss but liked Igloo's trim and doors so much I painted my bathroom vanity high gloss black. I really like it.

Either will work well as long as you prep right and use a good primer & paint you should be good with either.

Just remember that the glossier the paint AND the darker the color the more perfect the job has to be, as both high gloss and dark colors show up imperfections a lot more than lighter colors and lower sheens.

Yep, good advice. I too learned that one the hard way. Light sanding works too to make the paint bond if you're painting over oil painted trim.

I find that semi-glosses can vary in their sheen. I've used Lowe's Valspar in the recent past, and that seems to be shinier than the SW Pro Classic I am using now.
