Ever use a separate blackout liner on drapes?

I have posted this on the sewing forum and thought I might get feedback here as well. I am making pinch pleated panels for a large patio slider. I need blackout lining due to the sun issues in the afternoon. If I use blackout lining as a normal lining, I think it will be very bulky for me to sew and form the pleats using the heavy blackout lining. Another idea would be to use a separate panel of blackout fabric attached to the drapery books, hanging separate from the drape. It would need to be the finished width of the top of the drapes. Sort of like a shower curtain liner attached to a decorative shower curtain. The drapery fabric is medium weight home Dec cotton. My concern is how this would look especially when the panels are open and stacked on the sides. The other alternative to pinch pleats would be a flat panel with ring clips, however when these types of drapes are open they look "flat". Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!
