Display Kitchens on the cheap
Comments (6)I'll add another con, or two... I spent a good bit of time in the big box stores looking at display kitchens. Every single one of the display kitchens was poorly put together. I assume that some poor schmuck who makes minimum wage got stuck slapping them together, probably on a very short time schedule. In every display kitchen I've seen, the wine racks are, at best, stapled together, plate racks are falling apart (pull on one, gently), and the "extras" aren't well-installed. I pulled one roll-out drawer completely out of the cabinet! It had a nice sticker that said "Try our new Full Extension Roll Outs!" Boy, was I surprised that full extension meant onto my foot! :) If that's how they put together the "special" stuff, imagine how the cabinet boxes were built, hinges installed and how much they were beat up while being hoisted into place. That doesn't include the dirt and dust I've seen on the display units; nor does it take into account the dings and gouges from shopping carts, strollers, people's keys, etc. Unless you're getting a REALLY good deal on the cabinets, and you or DH is handy, AND you're willing to do the cosmetic and possibly structural work to the cabinets, I think you might be better off looking at a less expensive cabinet like Ikea. To put that in perspective, I'm working on my kitchen remodel for under $10k and DH keeps telling me that I can relax about the money a little. I wanted a bottom door fridge, but I've spent a year haunting CL until the exact one I wanted was listed for $250, versus the $2500 it was priced in the store. Oh, and I sold the fridge I had for the same price, so my new fridge is basically free to me. I think a display kitchen may be too cheap for even me. :)...See MoreFinished--a soigne Ikea kitchen
Comments (21)Thanks for the compliments everyone. I can answer a few questions quickly now and get a little deeper later this evening: >how much space between wall and counter on seating side of >island? About 36"-38". Enough space to walk behind someone eating (i.e. seated and pushed in) at the counter. >does it feel like enough counterspace between >sink and refrig?? More than enough. It's mostly dead space due to the microwave shelf overhang. Maybe I should move the knife block there... >How was the cost (of the SS perimeter counters) compared >to your other options? We only wanted SS and got this on the cheap, I think. There's about 25.5 linear feet of SS countertop. We paid about $1,250 for the metal, $500 for the substrate and about $250 for the install ($2,000 total). We transported the materials ourselves. That's about $36.25/sf, not including the sink and the sink install. We got one quote from an experienced residential fabricator for a seamless L in 14 gauge with an integrated sink for $11,500 ($199/sf) and decided to go with the rougher/cheaper install. >Where did you do your prep [before the remodel]? We bought the house as-is and did the remodel before we moved in. I don't know what the previous owner did, but that old oven was immaculate. >Do you remember how wide your aisles are? 42" in front of the refrigerator; 40" in front of the cooktop, and a little over 36" behind the counter stools. A little more space in front of the refrigerator would be nice. We could have lived with 38" in front of the cooktop, no problem....See MoreHow To Use Ikea to Get a Custom Kitchen (High Quality)

Snap and clip. No glue required. Yes, the drawer is fully extendable. Then, you add the front you wish to add, onto the un-fronted drawer. The Blum clips to screw to the Blum drawer side can be ordered anywhere for less than $1 each. These clips hold your chosen drawer front onto the drawer. Any front will do. Comments (0)I was there this weekend for other stuff, but I love browsing through their kitchen displays. I guess they decided to give the free kitchen design seminars since they are not helping in that regards any longer....See More- 13 years ago
