And here is our [nearly] finished NEW kitchen:

We swapped the old kitchen and dining room spaces for the new eat-in space and new kitchen, respectively. We cut the opening next to the wine rack, and closed the wide arch in the renovation pictures (which is the sink backsplash now). This relocated the old path from the stairs and the foyer to the kitchen, which required walking through the entire length of the living room and the kitchen, to a direct route that does not require entering the living room at all. As to our look, we strove for a classic nouveau white kitchen with an institutional edge. We chose Ikea cabinets to make the project financially feasible. We really wanted Plain & Fancy white inset shaker cabinets. The estimate on those cabinets alone was more than the cost of this entire renovation, with appliances!!

Floor: Red Oak natural hardwood

Cabinets: Ikea Lidi (white) and Ikea Liljestaad (brown)

Perimeter counter: 18 gauge SS over 1.5" plywood substrate

Island counter: 1.75" lyptus edge grain

Mommy Command Center counter: Carrara Marble

Backsplash: Subway Ceramics (White #10)

Bravo! What a bright, happy place you've made for yourself and your family! You did a great job with the layout, and made excellent use of your resources. About that PA system - you might want to check out military surplus yards :-) Good luck with your wish list, and may you and the "little people" have many years of joy in your beautiful kitchen.

It looks wonderful . It is very fresh and clean and looks so efficient. I saw your wish list. I just ordered the rail system from Lee Valley...it is beautiful and very heavy steel and VERY INEXPENSIVE. I am so excited as the Rosle is so expensive and I was giving up. Also the Lee Valley is a roundpipe and I wanted that as I don;t like the flat metal ones. I think if you like the industrial look that you will like it too. GREAT JOB !! c

We are just finishing up a budget remodel with Ikea cabinets. First thing I would advise is make sure you plan a good time period to start your remodel. Ikea runs specials and you should start getting an idea of what they are and how often they are offered. We pulled the plug a little early because they were having a sale that was 20% if you bought 3 appliances. Come to find out the next off it was just 20% off if you spent X. That would of been a better deal since we ended up with a so/ so range hood and a microwave that we are not using. It still worked out to be a better deal then buying straight. They also put all the stuff they did not have in stock on a gift card so we could pick up later. For example if something cost $100, we got a gift card for $120. I wish I had added a few more things to that were out of stock because we used all those gift cards and more. Not necessarily on the sizes that were out of stock, but on other things like large panels and trim we originally did not include in our plan. Make sure you have a solid plan, DH and I have two young children and decided to do our kitchen with little planning and research. I posted a small layout question here or there, but nothing major. This is our third kitchen remodel and our last one which was pre children included 6 months on here. Our last layout was awesome, thanks everyone! The plan had to be solid because it was built by a local cabinet maker. I love our new layout, but we did not narrow the kinks and have finalized our plan as we went. It is nice that you can return cabinets to Ikea. Ours has gone past the original return time, but DH was able to take some of our extras back and get a store credit. If you go the Ikea route I would recommend not getting those plastic legs. DH tried on the first cabinet and it was a PIA. His friend then told us that they built theirs on 2x4 frames plus a sheet of plywood on top of them. I am sure others have their way of doing it so research methods. You can shim under the whole cabinet run frame to get the run level. I am always shocked at how much electricians and plumbers cost. I would start asking around to find good ones that are cheaper or do side work. My DH originally was going to do the plumbing, but realized that it was harder then he thought. He also works 6 days a week and does not get home until after 7. This really made us evaluate the cost of not having a kitchen vs paying someone. He spent 3 Sundays and a few nights until 2 AM trying to do one thing. It took the plumber a few hours to do the same job and the harder ones. Start looking at granite fabricators to see if they have remnants and their costs. Especially for an island which has not cut outs it can be one of the cheaper options. We went with the thinner Ikea butcher block (they don't have it anymore) for our perimeter and a granite remnant for our island. If you know certain features (faucet/ sink/ appliances), you can start looking for them now. I got my oven- a Fisher Paykel double oven with a dent on the bottom door from a shopping cart for $1000 at Lowe's. I always check their misorder/ floor model section for good appliance deals. When I saw it, I called DH and he called a friend at an appliance store who was able to order a replacement door for us. We spent less then $1500 including labor. We have had it for a year and a half waiting for the new cabinet. Since DH and I were not about to drywall our ceiling, we ended up using v-groove knotty pine so it would be easier. It also adds a little character to our kitchen. We did have to add molding because our walls were not totally square (not part of the original plan). The point is know your weaknesses and try to think if their is a different DIY way to get around it that is a strength. Good luck on your new kitchen and make sure you get layout advice here because everyone really challenges your thinking. My last two kitchen would not of been half as nice without them.

"Vision" is a kind way to put it Igloo! There was something about the house that pulled us in when we saw it, despite the total lack of curb appeal and the hideous kitchen, bathrooms, living areas, garden, etc etc. Flyleft, yes, wine above the fridge (required to give us the "vision"). I know its not the best place to store it, but we're not talking long-term storage here! The wine fridge has "good" wine (1 bottle of) and a couple of beer bottles but is mostly full of Pellegrino water. Your DD is getting a very thorough education in "Advanced Remodeling", she will be ready to graduate soon ;) Soigne, we got the L-brackets at Lowes. i think they were in the hardware area (not the shelf bracket aisle, those were not heavy-duty enough). they were very cheap, maybe $10 each. Dgmarie, I don't know whether the pendant lights are code. I do know i have seen other pics on here of pendants hanging over sinks, which doesn't mean that its code of course. My DH installed them (and the undercab lights). They each have their own box in the cabinet right above the pendant, so if they somehow fell, they would cut out. But i do not know if its code -- anyone else know? Mystery, we like the fridge but wish we had gone with the french-door version you have as we didn't think about clearance between door and island -- there is not too much space to get round the door when its open (at least not for me, but thats another topic!). Yes, I agree the freezer is annoying, but i suppose all bottom-freezers must be similarly so. I do prefer having the fridge on top as we are not huge freezer-users, so for us, the frustrations of the bottom-freezer are worth it. The cooktop is fantastic, my DH researched and bought it and I'm very glad we went with induction. We paid a lot less by importing it (I think it was about $1000), as I've read for others importing from the UK or NZ.

I just picked up a chinahutch . The bottom of this particular one would make a perfect place to set a flat screen on or above. In our area china hutchs are free or not much more than $100 . Expanding your search to include hutchs might be a good option for you as well. I have another much more elaberate hutch so when I saw this one on the side of the road with a free sign on it I passed it buy then though better of it and turned around a looked it over. Its solid oak has a perfect finish ,a very plain square design. I am going to paint the top to match my daughters furnature and it will go in her room and the bottom will go in the craft room.

Our sink was an off-the-shelf, 18 gauge undermount sink. Our fabricator welded it into the countertop, and you really can't tell that they were ever separate. No seams, nice clean lines. You can judge for yourself! It's true that you can't integrate just any sink. It has to be a certain thickness and quality in order to weld it onto the countertop, and the sink manufacturers' specs don't necessarily tell the whole story. The sink may have been made out of 18 or 16 gauge steel, but after it's stamped and stretched into shape, it may no longer be that thick. When we first met up with our fabricator, he was complaining about having just welded a Franke sink into a countertop, because there was so little material to work with, the sink having been thinned out quite a bit during manufacture. The sink we ultimately went with happened to be in the fabricator's shop already, so we bought it off him, and he knew he could weld it.

Looks super! Swapping the kitchen and DR sounds like it was a great idea as it gave you a more workable space (we're considering swapping our DR and LR because it might suit our needs better).

What a nice roomy kitchen...it looks great!

A couple of questions when you get a chance,
how much space between wall and counter on seating side of island?
I am considering my sink-dw-refrig lined up like yours, does it feel
like enough counterspace between sink and refrig??

What a fantastic job. How interesting that your stove in the former space sat all by its lonesome. Where did you do your prep? I can see so much thought put into your remodel and it must have come out just as you envisioned it-- really lovely and a good use of space. Do you remember how wide your aisles are?

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I can answer a few questions quickly now and get a little deeper later this evening:

About 36"-38". Enough space to walk behind someone eating (i.e. seated and pushed in) at the counter.

More than enough. It's mostly dead space due to the microwave shelf overhang. Maybe I should move the knife block there...

We only wanted SS and got this on the cheap, I think. There's about 25.5 linear feet of SS countertop. We paid about $1,250 for the metal, $500 for the substrate and about $250 for the install ($2,000 total). We transported the materials ourselves. That's about $36.25/sf, not including the sink and the sink install. We got one quote from an experienced residential fabricator for a seamless L in 14 gauge with an integrated sink for $11,500 ($199/sf) and decided to go with the rougher/cheaper install.

We bought the house as-is and did the remodel before we moved in. I don't know what the previous owner did, but that old oven was immaculate.

42" in front of the refrigerator; 40" in front of the cooktop, and a little over 36" behind the counter stools. A little more space in front of the refrigerator would be nice. We could have lived with 38" in front of the cooktop, no problem.

Wow! That kitchen sings to me!! Really nice -- those yummy floors and countertop just warm up the whole room. Where did you get your lyptus countertop? Is that something you'll cut on, or not? I think I would faint if someone put a knife to that beautiful hunk of wood.

What is the rail system you mentioned? Is that for holding up some open shelves?

We bought the lyptus counter from Devos Woodworking. It's beautiful, but I will admit that we are having a problem with some checking (splitting with the grain near the edges) that we have not resolved with Devos yet, because we just brought it to their attention.

I want to cut on it, but DW will have none of it. So, I only slice a sandwich or a piece of fruit on it every now and then when nobody's around. ;-) The lyptus is very hard, but open-grained. I was somewhat worried about staining with the open grain, but it hasn't been a problem. I finish it with 100% tung oil thinned with Citrus Solvent from time to time. I have dripped everything from Balsamic vinegar to red wine to chocolate syrup, and it all wipes up clean without leaving a stain.

Thanks for the detailed cost information, Soigne. It's very interesting. I had a SS counter long ago, and just maybe there is another one in the future. Your kitchen reminds me of how much I liked it.
