Opinions on combining marble & glass tile

You all are probably going to get very tired of seeing posts from me about my backsplash :) I hope not though since I'm still struggling! I've narrowed it down (I think), so am almost positive I want to use marble rather than all glass tile, but am now wondering if I can possibly integrate a glass tile with the marble (not in the same tile such as a glass/stone mosaic, just separately).

I came across photos of Chloes_mom's kitchen and love how she used small 1x1 glass tiles as vertical accents, rather than horizontally. How do you think this would look with marble though - would it just take away from the marble?

For example, if I used calacatta marble with glass tile, would something such as the photos below look weird? A couple of options:

1) Use only marble on the range wall and then glass tile accents on the two other walls

2) Glass tile as backsplash ONLY behind the range (or combination behind the range with a border)

I'm so horrible at visualizing things - obviously I do not have a designer's eye! :) Does anyone know of any website or software that will allow you to actually plan out what your backsplash will look like?? I guess I could try on paper, but my drawing skills leave a lot to be desired also!

Hi,
This is not a great picture online (the magazine has a closer view)but this backsplash is one of my inspirations. They have the smaller 1x1 glass tiles as a band, then a thin pecil molding and then the subway tiles. I'm doing the same pattern but instead of 1x1 tiles, I'm using rhomboid shape combination of glass, stone and metal mosaic from Sonoma tilemakers. The field will be subway tiles as well...
Just an idea how you can incorporate both tiles...HTH

By the way, I just found this website and has beautiful kitchens for inspiration...

nightowlrn - thanks for photoshopping the glass mosaic tiles. I like the how the tiles look with the cabinets, but I am not sure if they really work with the granite. Do you have any pictures of neutral glass tiles, maybe in clear or light gray in color? Jodi - I found a couple of photos of the Mandorla tiles online. I think these pictures are more representative of how the tiles look in person. I hope they help with the color correction. blondelle - I just started a new thread asking about glass subway tiles. (I am sure everyone is fed up of my pleas for tile advice by now...) DH and I have been avoiding glass subway tiles, but it might be time that we reconsider. If you have recommendations for a light gray or clear/whitish glass tiles in 3 x 6 or similar, please let me know!

mwrede: Did you make a decision and call them back the next day? I really hope not--it's too stressful to be rushed thinking this through! Let me first say that I've never done a remodel, and I tend to overthink things,even after I've made my decision. This is your personal space; it should look as close to your vision as possible. Your idea for the backsplash is better than their's--ditch the side pieces. Splashback isn't so great that they are needed. They really seem to me to be a waste of marble and $$. I wouldn't think mirrors all the way down would be the best look. The round mirrors will probably be too small for the large vanity, but I like the idea of mixing a round mirror over the shorter vanity and a rectangular over the longer one, but not splitting the longer into 3 pieces--too choppy, not as pleasing visually. (I don't know why, but picturing mirror/sconce/mirror/sconce/mirror makes me think of an old Italian style, maybe in a 70s Vegas hotel.) The photos show a sleeker, calmer bath taking shape--all those elements on the wall don't really fit that. (Oh, and yes--you must get some money cut off the bill. That's a given!)

Frankly, I like what they have proposed better than the original plan (assuming I understood it right...you wanted the curved end only on the short sidesplash and a straight end on the backsplash?) I think it looks symmetrical this way, as it's the open ends that have the curved piece...not one open end and one that deadends into the wall. So, if it were me...I'd take the credit (I assume you mean a discounted price...not a credit towards something else, which possibly you don't want or need?) and feel good about it. But, as they say, advice is only worth what you pay for it!

At first thought I don't think the formica/marble combo sounds great to me but I can sometimes suffer from a lack of imagination..... Regarding designing around the stove....I respect not wanting to replace something that works. (I'm too shallow to do it, but I respect it) So, I say keep the stove just don't make your expensive and hard to replace design decisions around it. Make those decisions as if the stove were going to break in 3-5 years and you were going to be forced to buy a new one. What would you get? I think you could do marble everywhere and keep the stove. Just accent with a few retro things to keep the overall look kind of casual and tie the stove in. When it comes right down to it, marble is just a light counter top. If that looks good with your cabinets and floor and everything else I don't think the stove will be a deal breaker.

Erika - thanks for that photo! I'm so glad you mentioned AKDO because for some odd reason I hadn't even looked at their website, even though we're using their tile in a bathroom (ordered it from a local store though). I love all their concept boards and actually got some good ideas! It was much more helpful than seeing those in the store due to a larger variety.

Hogar - thanks for the link! You're right that it's a good site for inspiration photos. I just wish that it allowed you to click on a photo and make everything larger in order to see details!

Akdo is a very large company. They have just about anything you could think of. The only down side is that they are very expensive. I came across this site http://www.glasstileoasis.com/productcart/pc/Ocean-Sand-Series-c94.htm that have a selection of glass and stone mixed.
