When my daughter was 2 I gave her her first vinyl doll with hair. She loved that doll and used to carry it around everywhere, usually by the hair.

That summer DH had a yen to plant radishes in our garden, so while we were pulling radishes, I looked over at my little girl and remarked to Dh how that doll reminded me of a giant radish (DH planted way too many radish seeds).

Well, Ashley heard the word radish and she liked it. She started calling the doll Radish, and so she remained.

Her next doll was a Strawberry Shortcake, and Ashley called her that. Later she got another doll and decided to name her Cherry Pie. The doll after that she named Lasagna.

All this came to mind because while she was home for Christmas I asked her the name of the china doll I appropriated from her trunk to sit under the Christmas tree. She said her name was Peach Pie.

Very funny. Does she still have a food fetish? ha Just kidding. I came up with some different names for my dolls and they all had to have middle names as well. Never named any of them after a food that I can remember though. Too cute.
MY DS called one of his stuffed animals Spike and when we were looking for names for DD he said her name was gonna be Spike too and so she was called by everyone until she was born. ha Then he decided he would call her by her name, Neleh (Helen spelled backwards and pronounced Ne-lee-a) I still go for the different names. ha Does your DD have kids yet?? She could always go with Gwyneth Paltrows name for her DD....Apple I believe it was. ;) ~Anj

Was it Tom cruise and Katie whats'her name who named their baby Suri? In Lithuanian that means cheese.
DD is a very independant young woman who has no interest in having kids any time soon.
Actually, when she was 13 I burned my hand severly and couldn't use it for an entire summer. She wound up taking care of her 1 year old brother quite a bit. Diaper changing, bathing, and dressing little guys who didn't want to get dressed taught her a lot!

What a great opportunity you had to give her the snow globe! Even though we lived fairly close to both sets of grandparents and I loved them all, I didn't interact with them much in elementary years or as a teen; but had "snow globe moments" with them from time to time. My mom occasionally mentioned my maternal grandma wondered if I didn't like her because I usually went off to read a book. I just didn't know what to say to her. When I was 12 we moved next door to my paternal grandma to be where we could help her. I never felt close to her really. She tended to be critical and to compare me to, well, pretty much everyone, but she meant well. In college I moved into my mat. grandparents basement apartment to be closer to campus. In my whole life they had never tried to correct me (something I feel is always best left to the parents!). While I lived there they just visited with me, asked me about school and work, told me amusing stories, etc. Never once did I use the kitchen downstairs. I always ate with Gramm and Gramp and they always acted amazed that I would do all the dishes when I "should be studying" or that I could carry my book bag with so many big textbooks. They were delightful and brilliant and the least judgemental people I know! They met my husband long before the rest of my family did and made him feel welcome, too. He feels as close to them as I do. Gramm's been gone nearly 20 yrs now, Gramp has been gone for 11. I still miss them both with all my heart! I think you're wonderful for wanting a close relationship with your family! Just keep loving your little one and be patient. Don't push the relationship. Love her mom, too. Grandparents can be a safe haven when the time is right! Wishing you all the best! Kay

Can't these off topic, silly conversations be put in the Hot Topics Forum or the Kitchen Table Forum? There is a place on this board for this stuff and it is not in the Buying and Selling Homes Forum. I hate unintentionally clicking on silly threads like this. The title said "Maybe a little off topic" so I clicked it thinking it might be about landscaping or bank CDs or something slighkly related to homes, read the first post and skimmed the thread while I was trying to scroll to the bottom. When someone posts something so completely off topic just IGNORE their quest for attention and let the post drop off the page. Please.

Okay, you guys have convinced me! All the arguments you're using are the ones I would use with someone else, but wasn't using on myself. It's important to get exactly what you want once in awhile. It's important to fit in with your peer group. She's only young once. Wildchild, you're right that it doesn't matter why she wants it, just that she does. And Maddie_in_Ky, Sue_VA, and Paula_PA - you spoke to me, and I'd already thought of how I'd feel if she'd really sad that she didn't get the doll. It's one thing if we couldn't afford it, but that's not the case. So I'm getting a My American Girl doll with shoulder-length brown hair, brown eyes, medium skin tone, and pierced ears. Just like Chloe - and that's what she wants. Ruthieg_tx and Nikki_nj, thanks for the tip about searching eBay and Target for clothes. I found a soccer uniform (complete with shin guards, soccer socks, shoes and ball) on eBay. It's the same colors as her soccer uniform, and I think she'll like that. So thanks for all the help in figuring this out! And I love that there's a hospital if she cuts the hair off.:)

Depending upon her age, you could ask your daughter and follow her preference for her room. If the issue for you is the visual of it rather than spacing: With curtains on the window that hide the side window frames, you couldn't tell that wall behind the headboard is not as wide as the headboard. That might help the visual vibe. If you like the no curtain open window look, you could use both sheers and a pair of drape panels for each window and only cover the side window frames, leaving the shears in the middle to "cover" the window itself. Alternately, you could use a double rod and have the sheers on the inner rod and have the option to leave the curtains or drapes open or closed. You might also consider a different option: Change the bed to a metal frame (with wheels) -- without any headboard or foot board -- and use the window to the right of the chest of drawers as a headboard -- leaving the other windows unadorned, use curtains to create a theme at the head of the bed that represents your daughter's current interest.

What a cute story about your daughter. Does she know this is a happy memory for you?

I've noticed that my little 2yr old GD really picks up on words she likes the sound of. Sometimes she will repeat a word that we say and then say "that silly word". Right now she is in a phase of running up to tickle her Grandpa so he will say "You better watch it!" She giggles and repeats it back to him. Even comes to me to tell me what Grandpa said. Kids are just too cute!

I often like the sound of unusual names--but just know that the poor person with it will spend the rest of their life having to spell it for other people! ;o(

..........like me. I married a guy with a last name that is spelled EXACTLY as it sounds. Not only do I have to spell my exotic first name, I have to spell my last name too.
My youngest son went through a very long phase when he was 4 and 5 of calling people things like Tomato, or Potato or Pickle. Of course, when he was 4 he also went through a period when he wanted to be called Mr.(our last name), or Big Snake.

When my niece was about 2 years old I would always address her as "sugar pie", you know how southerners are, "come on over here and give me some suga, sugar pie." She associated that with me and called me "Shu Pie" for the longest time. Both my children called me BeBe until they were about 5 because it was what they heard my husband call me. They are both in their late 30's now so I don't remember the words they used when they were small but I do remember my son thinking he was invisible when he had sunglasses on, if he met some one he didn't like or was just in one of his moods, he would put on those sunglasses and ignore everyone.
