What can I do with this living space....paint? re-arrange?
Comments (3)That looks like a lovely space--plenty of light, large room, fireplace, nice wood floors. Some questions first. What are the primary functions of the room? TV watching, sitting and chatting, eating, listening to music, reading, entertaining guests, watching the fire? Make a list of all the things you want to do in this room. Then consider whether you can do them in the room as it currently is, or if you need to add/replace any pieces. For example, if you'd like to use this room as a cozy reading spot, is there a comfortable chair with a good lamp and table nearby, or is reading frustrating because the only place to sit with good light isn't comfortable for reading for long periods of time and there's no place to put down the book or a cup of tea? Second, traffic patterns. Most of the furniture looks pushed up against the window wall. Is that to leave a clear path to the doorway at the upper left? There are ways to arrange furniture to avoid the "bowling alley" effect. Could you post a drawing of the surrounding rooms so we can see the traffic flow? And is there a space outside the window that you access from this room? Third, what's that box hanging from the ceiling? Is that a projector? Where's the screen? As for style, cozy doesn't have to be cottagey. With the furniture you have now, I'd consider getting a large area rug or two. They would help define the space, and add some warmth, even if they are a modern design. A throw in a vibrant color. Dress the window in plain white sheers, maybe on a cable system from Ikea. But I really feel that rearranging the furniture will create a better feeling of coziness. I'd create two separate areas in the room. One up by the fireplace, with maybe a loveseat facing the fireplace, with an end table or two and a lamp. Or two chairs with a round table between them. Anchor that grouping with an area rug. Then a second, larger grouping in front of the windows, centered on the TV, using the sectional. I'd consider a different coffee table, or painting the one you have. Again, with a large area rug to anchor the seating area. As for colors, orange always seems like a modern color to me. So I'd consider swapping out the orange in the room for another color that would go with the brown. And ideally, I'd replace the huge speakers with smaller, wall-hung units, but that would be expensive. This post was edited by camlan on Sun, Jan 13, 13 at 10:36...See MoreRe-Doing Lamps on a Budget
Comments (10)juliekcmo, yeah, I've seen the metallic lamps. The problem is that my house is still sort of "eclectic", leaning towards the vintagey-country side and I'm not sure that would work. Juleecat, what color is the ORB? Does it look black. Sure would love to see pics of your lamps. I actually have some old Stiffel brass lamps up in my closet that I had tired of years ago. I wish I could be more "modern", but I just have a real bent towards the country-cottagey look, so thought maybe a green or something would look good....See MoreLiving Room Re-do...What Do I Do First?
Comments (7)Let's see: 1) Really sit around the whole room -- in every chair and seat. Look. Look. and Look Again. How do you want the room to feel? Warmer? Cooler? More Open? More Cozy? b) Really write down any issues with the room at this point ... seating for how many? tables? shelving for storage? Is the room too dark (or have dark corners?) too light? c)HOW do you want the room to work for your current needs? TV? Reading? Conversation? 2)Measure Everything. And write it down. Really. Measure the room, walls, windows and doors. AND hallways -- too many folk have bought a wonderful sofa/armoire/shelves -- only to find that their perfect item won't fit through the front door or down the hallway! :) 3)Start collecting inspiration photos from all kinds of sources. Really examine photos -- and decide WHAT and WHY something takes your eye .... color? shape? texture? arrangement? 4)Find a starting point. Usually start with a larger item -- like a sofa. Then decide on your needs for additional seating options -- chairs? loveseat? 5)Keep an eye on your local stores -- and search your local Craigs List. 6)Find the next item -- usually a rug or additional seating. Choose one -- and then -- look for the other one. 7)Once the main items are in place -- look again. What tables are needed? 8)Lamps. Lamps. Lamps. Table ones. Standing lamps. Always have lighting options! :)...See Morewhen re-painting over existing paint do you need to prime first?
Comments (9)For some reason washing surfaces before painting seems to have become unpopular and is not always done. ANY paint adheres better to a clean surface. If TSP is still available in your area (some places restrict it since it has a lot of phosphorous) it is still the best heavy duty cleaner for surfaces to be re-painted. It does take a wash and a separate rinse, but makes the surface clean to accept a new coat of paint....See Morefranksmom_2010
