new to forum, need Timtex

Hi everyone,

Just recently started sewing - home decor, drapes, pillows, baby blankets and purses/bags.

I'm trying to find a stiff plastic board to place in the bottom of the handbags, one pattern called for Timtex, but cannot find it anywhere. What is typically used in this case (can't use cardboard, the juice cups leak alot!!).

I used the kitched forum alot 2 yrs ago, now I'll be checking in here periodically.

Timtex is a really thick interfacing. I used it once for a small purse I made. The stuff I used was, I'm guessing, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. It was pretty hefty, but you can sew right through it. As well as being hefty, the price was high. I found something I could use instead at Walmart. It wasn't quite the same, but it was close. Just go to where the interfacing is, and look for the really thick somewhat rigid interfacing.

BTW, about 6 years or so ago, I made a cloth nativity set, and I used plastic in the bottom. The heat from the garage where it was stored disintigrated the plastic.

I'll check out Walmart. You're right about the price, I placed an order online for 13.5" x 22" @ $5.60. However, the company hasn't confirmed, charged me or answered any inquiries since placing the order on 10/25.

Kater, I mostly have OGRs and just a few HTs on Dr Huey bought at Lowe's (cheap). My Mrs BR Cant is on fort from the Apopka nursery (forget the name). Personally, (and I think I must be outnumbered) I don't like the growth habit and I don't think it's necessary re nematodes when the garden is well composted. (The most important reason I water the whole bed is to create a moist and healthy environment for the microbes which feed the plants and repel the nematodes.) OGRs typically come only on their own roots, although Dr Manners buds them and puts them up for sale at the Lakeland meetings. If you google nematodes/roses/Florida, you'll find articles by the FL IFAS on the subject. Apparently, the acids put out by the decomposing organics repel the nematodes. Organics create a hostile environment for them, countering the effect of hot, dry sand. That's what I've read, and I hesitate to contradict anything that Dr Manners does. His USF garden is all fort-budded roses. Another consideration for me was the expense which is about double if you can find them. Roses on fort get very large. HTs get to 6 to 8 feet tall. I installed my micro system from parts bought at Lowe's. A semi-strenuous process and only sort of like rocket science. Do it in the winter when it's cool. With the 180-degree heads you can cover the whole garden by spacing them accordingly with little or no wasted water. My beds are generally 6 feet wide which is the spread of the sprinklers. Spacing of roses when planting is crucial. Roses start out tiny and grow quite large at maturity here, so the temptation will be to space them close, but be strong and resist the temptation or you'll be digging them up and moving them. No fun. Six foot centers are minimum, and your tea roses can get to a width of 8' in 3 or 4 years plus you need access room for pruning, etc. It may look funny for a while to have so much space between your roses, but you can fill in with annuals or perennials until the roses get bigger. That will give you a cottage-y look anyway. Pine bark mulch is good. It will decompose and add to the organics. Roses like alfalfa. I get the 50-lb bags of pellets from the feed store for horses. Rose Tone is good, and there are recipes for making your own organic fertilizer. Just google it. A soil test from your county extension service would be good. You did not say how long you have been in GA or where you came here from. Are you actually thinking formal? It didn't seem like it if you bonsaied the boxwoods, they had probably been sheared all their lives which would suggest formal. You may be better off ripping them out, and putting in new ones, even if you are just wanting to renew an old, boring landscape, you could probably do some judicious pruning to rejuvenate new growth. Formal isn't necessary, just because the house is colonial, keeping up sheared and "formal", is a lot of work, not good for the plants, and takes the fun out of it . Creating a habitat does not have to mean wild, overgrown or unkempt. Even so you can still create a beautifully welcoming entry that would compliment the house, really WOW you and the neighbors and give you the gardening pleasure. Learning a bit more about what grows well or too well here, how not to commit crape murder, what is on the invasive species list, and so overused in most yards of those who are not really gardeners, can all help you do it in a "professional way". I have had the best and very rewarding experience with mine, and I have the joy of being the gardener and designer. I have a very formal looking 80' long double level wall in the back, and the habitat in front. It's just the way it turned out, because we needed a retaining wall. I guess it just depends on how you want to use the front, if you want to use the front area and sit out there when ever there is shade, you want to feel connected to the plantings. I have all the books for gardening here, and love to share gardening with anyone. I am mostly free to meet with or go to nurseries or tours if you need a garden buddy. My husband is always bringing people to see my yard, and always tells them, it was all me. Many people have ask for my help or ideas, he wants to hire me out, but I can't do that. I used to be the gardener at our home church, having a group of kids helping me sometimes. That started when someone suggested we,( meaning me) plant some flowers in preparation for my son's wedding, that lasted several years.

Hi GillyLily- We have two cats and a dog that got a BAD case of fleas a few months ago (maybe 4?) and we were going crazy trying to get rid of them. They were all over the house, bathroom, bedrooms and back yard, and the basement apartment that was currently vacant. We learned the hard way that Frontline is highly toxic to our dog so we had to try less harmful treatments. I did a lot of research on what people did before science started 'helping'. It's kind of a long story but it has worked 100% so far and is harmless to pets, kids, the planet :) First we put 20 Mule Team Boric Acid all over the house. (MUST be the 20 Mule Team kind- I've heard the others don't work and have different and harmful chemicals) Every floor, chair, couch, under the couch and cushions and fridges, hallway, in the bedrooms etc you get the point -it looked like it snowed in here. I also put it outside on the porches and walkways and used it as detergent to wash all the linens, blankets pillows etc. I sprinkled Diatomaceous Earth on the lawns and the basement. We put frontline on the two cats (one treatment is all it took) and started giving Dog a quick bath every day using Dr Bronners peppermint soap. It is completely non-toxic (you can wash your dishes, kids, everything with this soap) and fleas HATE the stuff. (The mint is a natural deterrent so if a flea jumps on him and smells it- it'll jump right back off). We used a loofah and let the bathwater raise while he was in there. The soap is minty and feels cool on your skin so Dog ended up liking these baths. Fleas drown in water so they will climb up towards your dogs head so it's helpful to have your flea comb near by. We put a sprinkle of Brewer's Yeast in their food every day (fleas/tics/mosquitos all hate the way it makes our blood taste) and in our food incase the fleas got desperate and came looking for us. (Brewers Yeast is really healthy for everyone. It's got a lot of vitamins in it. We never camp without it or we'd be eaten alive by mosquitos!) I left the boric acid down for about 10 days, vacuumed and swept it all up then did it again about a week later. I also combed all three of them with a flea comb dipping it in a bucket of warm vinegar water. This I did on a white sheet on the kitchen floor so I could see fleas trying to escape. Strangely, the pets liked the vinegar and were licking off themselves, which when ingested helps deter fleas too! Also the fleas die instantly when they hit the warm vinegar water, If you do this for 5 minutes every day you'll see how quickly the fleas are disappearing and when you can stop. In under two weeks we were 100% flea free. If any eggs hatched they had nothing to feed on and nowhere to go as the boric acid killed them. Now, nobody is on frontline. Dog still goes to the dog park daily and hasn't brought any home. Depending on what type of flooring you have and how often it is shampooed the boric acid can kill fleas for a long time. Remember, even the organic flea shampoos and collars have pesticides and poisons that can harm or kill your pets. Also, all of the supplies above are significantly cheaper than just one box of Frontline. Ps- I gave my dog a rubdown with a little Flax oil after is Bronners bath and put a teaspoon in his food to make sure his skin didn't lose excess moisture- he's sensitive :) GOOD LUCK and I hope I was able to help- Heather

Fabric.com has it (link below) If you have a Joann's or Hancock's near you, they would either have that or another brand heavy interfacing that's the same.

Divermom, most sites have a minimum, so that's probably why you haven't and won't get a confirmation. Been there.

Another brand name is Peltex - same stuff, different manufacturer.

Lazy Girl Designs sells a line of acrylic purse bases in five different sizes to match Lazy Girl bags patterns. Lazy Girl bags have a sleeve or tube in the bottom of the bag, so you can put the Bag-e-Bottom in and take it out; it's not sewn in. However, they are just simple acrylic, and you can buy acrylic sheets various places and have them cut to your specifications. Tap Plastic, probably Home Depot, Lowe's, or a local hobby store. A little sanding on the rough edges and you're ready to go.

A friend of a friend makes bags and purses and uses plastic cut from square milk jugs or water bottles (the flat sides of the bottles) to make a simple stiffener panel to slip into a sleeve at the bottom of the bag. Slip the plastic out and wash the bag, then put it back in again. Easy to replace, if need be.

Welcome to this site! I've made oodles of purses, and I use that plastic mesh, sold by the sheet at JoAnn's and Michael's, for the bottom of my bags. Just cut it to fit (not with your sewing shears, but with an old, non-sewing pair) and sew a fabric cover or sleeve to match. It's a fairly heavy opaque mesh that normally is used with yarn to make craft boxes, etc. I have found one layer is adequate, but you could layer two for more strength. It's cheap and easy. The nice thing is you can make it fit exactly with no trouble, unlike acrylic.

Some excellent ideas for me to check out! I quess I'll have to make another trip to JoAnn's - what a shame. Maybe I'll find another project to work on, along with the 7 others that I have started.

Timtex can be found in quilt shops also. I buy it by huge bolts on Ebay. Some stores may carry it under different names. Craft bond is one name I have heard it called in craft stores. I would cover it with fabric before putting it in the bottom of a purse. I know people who have used acrylic pieces at the bottom of purses (there are precut pieces in stores). I have gotten my husband to cut one out of a broken hard plastic container. I also know some ladies who got some empty fabric bolts from my brother's store and cut them and covered them to put at the bottom of tote bags - they are thick cardboard and double layered. That wouldn't work in purses, but a similar idea with heavy cardboard might work if laminated and covered with fabric.

I found the peltex in Joanns - will be perfect for a stiff side in a tote insert. The mesh for bottom will be great for smaller bags, but the large tote that I am making just will be too big for that. I cut up some thick cardboard and wrapped it in postage tape. The tote is for the beach/pool and might get wet so hopefully the tape will make it slightly more waterproof.
