Thanks awm03. I'm trying to figure out what era it's from. My guess is pre-MCM, but how much before, I have no clue. I love it though.

Mine is very, very similar to this cabinet. I bought it in 1968 or 1969 I think.
The hardware is different, and the drawer look across the center is a little different, but for the most part they are the same. My left leaf even leans down like the picture. The molding and cut out on the bottom is even the same.
Mine was purchased for a Pfaff 1222E - state of the art at the time - and I still use it in the cabinet!

Gosh I never would have guessed it to be that new magothyrivergirl. Do you have a picture you could share of yours? I'd love to see it.

I like it! I frequently see the kind where the top is not flat. It's hard to find one that is flat & I've been looking LOL

It's wonderful but is it practical? Do you mind sewing on a table with that small of a surface area?

LK, search your local Craigslist and thrift stores. I see them all the time. This was a gotta have though. The others just didn't compare to it's "style".

FF, I learned how to sew on my Mom's Kenmore decades ago and it was in a table similar to this without the added drawers. This type of table was quite popular back then. It's actually more practical than sitting at a dining table which is what I have been doing. I used a small desk at one time, but these sewing machine tables are the best!

I found a similar one on google images that said it was from the art deco era. That's kind of what I thought when I first saw it.

Is it easier than a dining table because the fabric just goes over the side? I need to learn to sew (ASAP so I can get my curtains done!) and was wondering about that . . .I knew how to sew basic clothes in my teens but I've forgotten everything!

I know Anele, I could hardly believe it when I saw the sticker! I grabbed that baby without hesitation.
If you've sewn clothes in your teens sewing curtains will be a snap. It's all straight lines! Well until you get into the Pate Meadows patterns. I realize from working in fabric stores that most have trouble measuring and deciding how much fabric they need. I'd do the figuring in my head while my customers were reading the pattern. Which you don't need unless you are doing something like PM patterns. Panels, tiers and valances are a breeze. If you need help start a thread with pictures and measurements and possibly an inspiration picture if you're not making just one fabric panels.
Which reminds me. I have slacks to hem for my hubby today! He needs them tomorrow. He was one, out of three picked, from of all the umpires in the state to do an allstar game and will be honored before the game. He bought all new uniforms so he'd look his best. Not that he always doesn't. He still has that military ideal of looking his best. You'd think this was his main job. He's a programmer analist for the University NE Med Cntr hospital during the day. He started umpiring for exercise when he got tired of playing softball.

Just, you and your many talents are always inspiring! In theory the curtains seem easy-- like you said, it's just straight lines! I know how big I want the header and rod pocket to be and need French seams. In theory, I think I know how to do this . . .but the idea of (gulp) working with such large pieces of fabric, cutting straight (I have no tools for this other than scissors), pinning straight, sewing straight . . .ahhh! I don't even remember how to use the machine! I'm going to make curtains for a hallway that no one really looks at before I do the living room as my practice run.

Your DH is lucky that you can hem for him! He's rare to care about his appearance these days! We have gotten so casual in the US. Congrats to him on getting picked and being honored!

LOL Anele, I'm sure you'll do better than you think. If you are worried about sewing straight just go slow and keep your eye on the seam line or get one of the magnet guides.
Oh gosh, unless you have an older machine, that may not work. My new cheapy machine (my good one broke down and I was in the middle of a recovering cushions for a customer and didn't want to spend much since I was going to fix my oldie but goodie) is plastic. On the plastic one I used a thick, foam like, bandage tape to guide me. It stuck really well.
I've linked you to a french seam tutorial below. Why is you need to use them? Preference? They are nice.
Thank you on the complements for my hubby. I wouldnt' say he always cares about his appearance. No really only when he's working outside does he look and smell bad! If his hair gets within shouting distance of his ears he's heading to barber. Stills wears a military high and tight hair cut too.

Just, thank you for the link! The reason I need to use that seam is because I have to sew panels together (this is for a picture window).

My machine is my mom's, which she bought used. She got it tuned up and asked the people if she should just get a new one . . .the sewing machine people said she'd have to spend a lot to get the equivalent, since the new machines, like you said, are cheaply made unless you invest a lot.

I will try your suggestions for sewing straight!

You are very welcome anele. I've sewn panels together for a larger window and just used regular seams then pressing them open. What type of fabric are you using?
You Mom was lucky to get such wise advise. One of these day's I'm going to take my old White, which I bought used almost twenty years ago, into get fixed. I'm sure it's something simple and won't cost a whole lot. Well worth it. It's all metal. Heavy as an ox to carry, but I'll put it into the this table once it's fixed.

Hubby had a wonderful time. I got some good pictures too. The games were rather boring. Both won by the same team. First was 2-0 second 1-0. Most were out at the bat. I really enjoyed myself and so did he. And that's what counts. It started to rain on our way there and into the beginning ceremonies, but just as the first game started it stopped. Was humid for about a half hour then it was absolutely perfect. It was like the air wasn't there. Still plenty of cloud cover to keep from warming up to the point of being uncomfortable. It was hard to believe it was late July in Eastern Nebraska. It's usually in the ninties and very humid.
