Also, 8 feet seems like a long distance between my island and sink. Do you think that's too big of a gap?

I think the 8'1" measurement on your plan is from the island to the sink wall, not to the countertop edge, so the aisle is really about 6'. It still seems like too much to me. Four feet is usually thought to be sufficient, even for kitchens with multiple cooks. (Can someone with more experience chime in to confirm this?) You could scooch the whole island upward in your plan, about two feet.

I'm concerned that the DW is so very far from either of the tables, where most of the dirty dishes will be generated. Did you consider any layouts that put the clean-up in the lower part of the kitchen and the cooking in the top?

I'm also a confused by the "Dbl oven" next to the range, but under a window, seemingly. Is it really a single oven, under the counter? If so, then you still have countertop space to the right of the range, which is good. If it's a tall two-oven cabinet, not so good since the rangetop will be hemmed in by the cabinet and you'll have no landing space to the right of the range, and no room for pot handles on that side or utensil storage right where a right-handed person can most easily grab them. And if it is a double oven, does your cooking style require four ovens (two in the what looks like a 48" range and the two in that stack)? Or am I just reading the diagram incorrectly?

Mnerg, God bless you. We added the double oven since our first version of this where we did not have windows on that wall, so good point about the utensil storage and pot handles. I do not need 4 ovens, even at Thanksgiving time, so need to make that change to a regular double oven. I think we need to tinker around a little more! I don't want to walk too far to my DW!

Good catch on the double oven, mnerg...I thought that was counterspace.

I'm confused about the placement of the island. I agree that it's too far from the sink wall, and it pushes the table out of the best space, it seems. We have 8 kids, and 4 ft aisles work great for us.

Also the island should be nice prep space for the stove, but it's so far off line that they don't relate very well together.

The table seems to be squished into its space which looks to be about 10'?. It should be up and over a bit.
Move the island up about 1' to be even with the frig/pantry wall and then extend it about 1' - 1 1/2' (whatever gives you a 4'clearance to the sink).
I also feel that the prep sink is out of place where it is. How often is the MW used and for what. Can it be moved to where the sink is and then move the sink up a bit closer to the range?
Where are you going to do your prep for meals? On the island or in the space between sink and range?
I can't tell the measurements of the area where your window seat is but I think that is a great place for tables and chairs for eating.

Answer some of the questions that have been asked and do your tinkering and then let]s see where you are in things.

Thanks, guys! We're definitely moving the island, based on your comments and need to "tinker" :0 some more on placement of oven, DW and microwave drawer.

This is a very big space, all in all. I see distant dining room, closer good-sized kitchen table area, very large desk area--I assume this is family room with outdoor access, very large laundry room, "pantry" closet along the hall inside the whole thing PLUS a "butler's pantry"--I assume this is to service the dining room only, AND a big closet in the dining room. Not sure how groceries enter this space and how waste leaves it. Also not sure how much you use the outdoors--is there a pool or deck area attached to kitchen?

You may want to tighten the work area within the larger areas, putting it closer to the kitchen table and putting the island down by what looks to be a family room, for casual eating and hanging out in relation to yard.

I have a G-shaped kitchen with 6.5 feet across the short width between sides, refrig at start of G, sink on long side, range at bottom of G. I sure wouldn't want any wider space for everyday cooking. Experts have calculated an optimum distance for each leg of the kitchen work triangle; I think I am on the verge of breaking it on long commute to refrig--can't recall how long it is, but it only rankles occasionally--when I'm at range and I need an egg or the butter or ....

I know this is impertinent, but I feel as though there are proposed spaces that you're still looking for uses for. Your bump-out is 15 x 22, is that right? Is there a second story room that is dictating such a large expansion and redefinition of the house?
