Well.. this may be a little "out there" but my immediate thought was to go with a light bright green.. like anjou pear.

It's a pretty busy pattern-- so what I'd pair with it depends on the role of the rug in the room. Will the rug mostly fill the room? Just under the bed? In front of the bed?

Yes it is a busy and bright rug. That's why my dd loves it. This rug will be filling the room with only 18" left on all sides.

I'm thinking your dd sees this rug in a completely different way than we do -- what are her ideas so far? Maybe have her look at rooms and pick out pictures she likes, too.

I am not sure that light blue would be a good background colour. If you have a lot of things to put on the walls (artwork?) I would let the rug be the "queen" of the decor and paint the walls an ecru.

One thing about whatever bedding you choose is that the scale must be smaller than that of your rug. (Or larger, but since the pattern on the rug is pretty big that doesn't seem a viable option.) You could do something in that apple green colour in the rug, or even the green/navy/light blue colours together and accessorize with red. Sorry not to be more specific but I personally am better at picking between Choice A and Choice B instead of coming up with something that may not even exist :)

The rug is nice and is a mature choice for a 13-year-old. I'd be interested to see what the final product looks like, forever.

I immediately envisioned a very funky/Bohemian theme -- maybe even leaning towards an exotic, Morroccan feel. I do see the blue-grey in the rug, and I think that would look fine on the walls.

I see the Bohemian/Morroccan thing, too, and am wondering if she likes that or if it's a current look for kids these days. Or maybe she just sees the bright red and a 'star' in the middle.

kswl, her room doesn't have a lot of wall space, she has a sliding door that leads to a balcony, mirrored closet doors and a door leading to her bathroom in addition to the door to enter her room. Thanks for the rule size of prints. I was sure there had to be a "rule". I will post a picture of the final room when we are done.

It's funny that auntjen and squirrelheaven both said it has a Bohemian/Morroccan thing going. My dd is reading everything over my shoulder. She asked what that was. She said that isn't the look she is intending.

kgsd, I purchased this rug through rugman.com. It is about 30-40 years old. I don't have a name for it besides, a wool Tabiz rug from Iran. I don't think I will ever purchase a rug without seeing it in person again. We intended for this rug to be used in a different room. It didn't work, and my dd fell in love with it, so she gets it!

Let her choose the wall color for her room and let her help out painting. Paint is relatively inexpensive, it's her room, she might learn something about decor/preparation/being detail oriented/being handy/taking pride in one's work, and she can change it in a couple of years if she doesn't like it. I'm a big believer in letting teens choose their rooms, and then helping them follow through on their choices. She can read this message, and she can invite friends for a pizza and painting party.

Try solids, things that read solid if you squint (e.g., tone on tone?), simple patterns that won't conflict and that use only two colors from the rug: stripes, plaids, polka dots, maybe monochromatic large scale florals (that last one would be hard to pull off). If it were me I'd want a solid color to not compete with the rug but it's her room, not mine:)

For the bedding I would probably pick something really versatile...or plain :)
Off-white or gold-toned sheets and comforter, maybe something close to your wall color. Then use a coverlet in a bright color along with some wild decorative pillows. Bring the red, blue, and bright green in a way that is easily changed.

PB Serafina pillow would be something I'd consider, along with the quilts I linked to, for inspiration.

There are so many colors in the rug that you almost can't go wrong with a wall color (well, maybe red, unless you like the "garden in hell" look) that picks up one of the colors in the rug. I think I see a blue-gray there. Does your DD want dynamic or restful? If dynamic, I think that I would choose accents to go with the dark blue, if restful, I'd pick up the lighter tones in the rug.

Look at how Ralph Lauren used similar rugs in his master bedroom.

I also have a 13-year-old DD and know that kids of that age have very definite likes and dislikes. Mine also likes vibrant colors; but sometimes it can be overwhelming when paired together in a small space. Since she has the rug, she should choose one the colors that is already in the rug and then try to match that color with paint. My daughter would choose the aqua/turquoise blue, but your DD may prefer another color. For a comforter, I'd encourage her to go with a solid (something along the lines of the crinkle puff in aqua) with some fun, colorful and decorative throw pillows to liven it up without overwhelming her space.

Love that rug. I am thinking about getting a somewhat similar rug (Karastan's red sarouk) for my DD's room (but she's not even 3 yet, so mom is picking out her rug ;-)

Maybe I'm seeing it through adult eyes, but I love the idea of the moroccan look, and lots of natural wood. I would also stick with solid bedding (in red and white maybe, or blue and white).

I think your daughter has excellent taste-- I also think it is leaning towards what I would call "funky bohemian" and a few of her selections definitely have a moroccan feel.

When I first saw the bright accents in the rug, I thought of the Gypsy quilt below. Unfortunately, I looked at the gypsy quilt as well as each of the quilts your daughter selected next to the photo of the rug and I think they are just TOO busy. If the rug wouldn't fill the room, a pattern might work but to have the two largest things in the room with intricate patterns is too much in my opinion.

I love the photo Jenny shared and the links valins shared--I would definitely use a solid comforter and patterned pillows and valances. Your daughter could use the basic principles already shared regarding patterns and then customize it to her tastes with the colors and patterns she likes. There are so many great colors in the rug that surely she'll have fun with it.

I like the PB chamois and puff .. also their velvets if they still carry them! Also check out what PB has-- there are some great fresh comforters on PB regular too.

They are very nice and I think the plain white quilt with the Cranberry and Citrus Green shams would look good. The maybe panels on each side of the balcony doors in either the Cranberry.

Jenny-- I think that picture is perfect! The main pieces are solid neutrals . . .and the spice comes in the form of the details. The rug is so amazing (I wish I'd had taste like that at 13!) that a busy quilt might just detract from it.

What about going more folksy, doing (don't think I am crazy) a blue jean comforter piled with bright folk pillows.

Mixing and matching pillows with a more calm (the denim) comforter will let her get her burst of color in fun pillows while still giving the eye a chance to rest.

I did some play shopping. I don't have kids, but I think kids stuff is so cute that this sort of thing gets it out of my system.

The comforter is from Dillards and looks as cute as can be. The pillows are PB (although not sized properly) I am just trying to show some colorful pillows (though PB has some really cool and fresh pillows) Forgive the sorry photoshopping... long day today.

There is alot of colors to work with. I would choose something like Sherwin Williams sassy green for the walls. Keep the compforter a solid cream color like the cream in the rug and layer it with pillows in the colors in the rug. Accessories can have the morroccan flavor or you can just choose accessories that have those bright colors. I don't know if I would mix any other fabric patterns in the room as it might be too busy. Please show us the finished product when you are finished!

I really like PC's idea.

The pic came from one of those periodical decorating magazines a few years ago but I'm blanking on which one, BH&G maybe? It's one of my favorites.

I like what paintchips pulled together also.

Speaking from experience, I would lean toward something like the denim set above. I bought several rugs similar to yours and have had a horrible time decorating around them. In my LR, I chose fabric from colors that I pulled from the rug and it looked terrible when I put them together. In my guest bedroom, I had a similar problem and actually bought a new bedding set/drapes in blues. I found that blue tones seem to go good with these rugs (a suggestion from allison0704). If you are interested, I can show you a couple of pics.

Well, I don't know what forever_learning's daughter has in her head.. but Paint Chips, I LOVE what you put together! Its whimsical and refined. I should let you loose on my kids' guest room.

I hate to admit, but sometimes I get jealous when I see all of the neat kids rooms that people get to do. Plus it is always fun "shopping" for people. : )

To everyone who has responded, thank you so much for your time and ideas. My dd loved your ideas and feed back. She has been trying to make a decision. She has been given a budget so she is being very thorough.

Paint chips, my dd loved your ideas. She is using your ideas as inspiration for her room. The blue-grey paint you selected is very close to what she selected previously. She selected Eddie Bauer Shale paint EB32-4 from Lowe's. We haven't tested it yet. I'm wanting to get the other fabrics first.

Jenny, I loved the picture you posted! I loved the valance in that room. I have looked all over for something like that for dd's room. So far no luck.

jynxed23, I would love to see a picture of your room. I have to agree the rug is making this more difficult. I'm assuming it must be easier to decorate around a rug if the colors are more muted. I may be incorrect about that.

Update on dd's room....

She found this duvet cover at pottery barn kids. She loves the chamois texture. The only problem is that they are sold out of matching shams and will not be restocking since they are closing out this line.

Personally, I feel that she needs a matching sham in addition to the fun decorative pillows. DD thinks we can go to the fabric store and find some navy fabric and whip up a sham. Do you also feel this is a deal breaker? I'm thinking that the color and texture should be the same. Any input?

Bedskirts...DD has looked for bedskirts. Of course they don't have any to match the above duvet cover. So she was thinking about a white bedskirt because we have been unable to find an off-white bedskirt in twin size. The rug has ivory but not white. Would white look bad?

If I can convience her to go with the denim duvet cover that paint chips selected, all my problems would be solved. That set has a sham and bedskirt that matches.
