Hi becca, I too am one who hates hunting camo. That being said, I come from a family of men who love to hunt. We also bleed purple and gold (LSU) so I combined the two feels to give him a true Louisiana boys room with a gentleman's touch while not being trendy. Again not sure if your talking Mossy Oak or Desert Storm, but this what I did in my son's room in our old home. I painted the room BM Woodstock Tan (a deep sort of brown). I bought a duvet and had a cover made from an army green colored cordouroy (sp) with wooden buttons for the enclosure (also had a sham made). I used RL leopard sheets on the bed with the Mossy Oak camo panels on the windows. What I didn't account for when making the duvet cover was the weight of the cordouroy (it is really heavy) nice in the winter, but I take it off in the summer and just use the white duvet. It lightens things up a bit (can get dirty if not careful). Also, I swap out the camo panels in the summer for white ones as well. The other camo accent that I had in that room was a portrait of him in camo with his gun from my father sitting on an old shotgun shell box. His furniture is different from that you will have as his is all antique from my grandmother's, but I am sure this can be retrofitted to match your furniture. The great thing about these colors is that they are pretty neutral so accent colors stand out well. Like the purple and gold LSU newsprints that I have matted in purple in his room and other LSU paraphanalia. Red also looks good against these colors. All of these colors and patterns may sound a bit busy, but used properly they compliment each other really well. We have since moved from this home, but I continue to use variations of this since it is something that works well with all ages and can grow with them. I have not thoroughly read through the above posts but I wanted to chime in! I am occasionally asked to help friends pull together a room, my advice to them is to keep it simple. I like to keep most items neutral and add pillows, throws and accessorizes for color and personality. For your chair that you are looking at in a blue - consider a accent chair of dark wood with upholstered seat cushions in a beige tone that goes with the lighter tones in your rug. The brown of the wood to bring in the darker brown tone and your sofa. Add some fun pillows not matching. Keep the curtains a simple linen with a nice ORB rod and rings. Bring in your animal print in a throw or pillows. Nice thing with this way of decorating is it will be easy to try different throws and pillows and accessories to pull it all together with out committing to a fully upholstered piece that you may not love. For you ottoman I would use a rectangle one in a cream color using a nice tray and colorful print throw and accessories to pull it all together.

I think it's great you want to start this tradition! I did something similar with my kids, and I thought I was lame because I didn't plan too far in advance. And I never consulted Pinterest, the bad mom that I am. But every year my kids and their friends (and their parents) kept participating and appreciated that someone was providing the venue. They won't remember your food or how you decorate, but will remember how you brought them together for fun. Saying that, 13-year-olds are completely unpredictable and irresponsible when it comes to serving themselves food. Unless you want to police how many slices of pizza or how many sundae toppings they can have, I recommend planning for much more than you think will be eaten, unfortunately. I love this age group, but they haven't learned the "my eyes are bigger than my stomach" mantra. Regarding what type of food, I would serve a variety of healthy foods presented in a fun way, like fruit kabobs and fun veggie dips, as well as easy-to-serve like pre-ordered deli sandwiches or pizza. Maybe an ice cream sundae bar if you have the means to keep the ice cream cold during serving time. I would not serve any virgin version of a cocktail. Even among parents you think you know, someone will misinterpret this in a way you did not intend. Water and lemonade are all that I would serve. A craft root beer is as adventurous as I'd get. Music, a few activity items available, etc., and the kids will create their own entertainment. I love what they can create to keep themselves entertained!

You could paint the nook where his bed is red above his head and the wall around the window and ac. Then wrap the red on around just into the white shelf area; the two ends and back wall forming the recess for the shelf. You could also use it to punch up that funky little bit of wall by the door with the dart board. If you paint everything gray first, you can step back and make the final decision before committing to red paint. You may decide that it will be better to paint the furniture red instead. Or you may just want to add red accessories like a duvet cover, pillows and rug. That way, when he tires of red, you can just pop in another color he likes by a simple change of soft goods.
