Teen Boy's Room Finally ready to go

I posted a while back about teen rooms and got some great ideas. The project got put on hold, but now that it is summer we are ready to go!

When he turned 13 we decorated my 16 year old's room with CL locker style furniture I sprayed painted black, a loft bed, and a futon for sleepovers. My other son wants to redo his room now that he's 13, and wants a loft bed. The older son is ready to get a queen bed, so the 13 year old is getting everything in the older one's room. Because they change minds so quickly I plan to Craigslist the new Queen bedroom furniture.

These pictures are of my 16 year old's room now. He's the only teen without a billion posters on his walls. I am bummed out about changing it!

husband refuses to repaint the room, and I would like suggestions on keeping the room cool and somewhat contemporary. Most of the sets I see on Craigs are wood, honey pine or oak, and I don't want to paint furniture. Do you think that's too much wood in the room? I will need headboard, nightstand, dresser and a desk. The desk probably won't match the set and could be black or painted.

I will repaint the younger son's room, which is carpeted in beige now. He mentioned black, which would be too dark in his room as he only has one smaller window. Any ideas to incorporate black without overwhelming the room?

I guess painting new/CL furniture black...or grey...might make a masculine statement. The 16 year old wants an older boys room...right??? In 2 years won't he be moved out? Something to consider.....:0)

My 13 yo daughter and 10 yo son share a bathroom... obviously too old for a fishy or ducky theme. We went with a medium tone wood-look tile on the floor, 4x4 white tiles with white grout on the walls (almost 5 feet up). The rest of the walls and ceiling are a semi-gloss white. The vanities are 3 white cabinets, bead-board style. The countertop is quartz- the black one with a silver sparkle in it. We went with drop-in sinks and it hasn't been an issue. The biggest 'HATE' is the brushed nickel faucets. They always look really dirty, even though it's just water spots. Those are going to be replaced, for sure. The floor hides EVERYTHING. For the most part, I've cleaned around the toilet and vacuumed. My 2nd regret is not putting a subway tile on the walls. I was nervous about messing it up and the cost was much more than square tiles so I blew it off. The semi-gloss paint has been very easy to clean... same with the white wall tiles. We went with a curved shower curtain rod and the curtain is a map of the Chicago "El" system. We stayed with the chicago theme by adding a wire Sears Tower and a cool Eddie Vedder concert poster. I just used red in several areas of my home. For a boys room I would paint the window wall and one other wall only. I would then paint the remaining two another complimentary tone in beige/white. I used BM spanish red in my laundry room. With all four walls the same color, I knew it would appear alot "more" red than I thought it would be, which is why I chose a much softer red than what I would typically chose from a paper sample of the color. Be careful with really "bright" purple, blue, or orange reds as when they have the same color bouncing off all walls, it can get quite "loud" to say the least. The spanish red for me had more of a beigy, brown, terra cotta feel to it on the sample paper. When all four wall were done however, it was a beautiful red that was not too bright of a red - like a fire engine or a wagon red might be. In my kitchen, I have very minimal wall space to cover so I chose BM pomegranite. It is also a great red however if I had to cover a large area, again, I would limit it's use as an accent color rather than a color to surround the room in. Hope this was helpful and good luck. It can be so frustrating as I went through many samples before finally chosing paint for my entire house. Just remember, it's only paint!

I don't have specific color suggestion. I'd just pull a few you are ok with and then let him choose the specific one from there. I don't think it will look depressing. Dark, yes, but if it's his room, no biggie. That ceiling will seem very short though painted that dark. I'd do baseboards gray or black. If you do a traditional white it's not going to look right. I think it's great of you to let your kid be so expressive.

You could paint the nook where his bed is red above his head and the wall around the window and ac. Then wrap the red on around just into the white shelf area; the two ends and back wall forming the recess for the shelf. You could also use it to punch up that funky little bit of wall by the door with the dart board. If you paint everything gray first, you can step back and make the final decision before committing to red paint. You may decide that it will be better to paint the furniture red instead. Or you may just want to add red accessories like a duvet cover, pillows and rug. That way, when he tires of red, you can just pop in another color he likes by a simple change of soft goods.

I hope he's moved out in 2 years ;-)

Good point about the 16 year old, I should get furniture that will work as a guest room too.

If the 16yo boy is going to college in two years, he ought not start getting used to a queen bed now - all he'll have in a dorm is a long twin. His room looks quite dormy right now.

My son went from a larger bed to a smaller college bed for his freshman year, and actually preferred the long twin. :) Said it was really comfortable. Now, he is back to a larger bed again.

I love that loft bed, but I can imagine why your son would want to come down and sleep in a normal bed. That must be a pain to get in and out of!!!
