Before And After Fireplace And A Few Questions

Here is a pic of our fireplace before and after

We actually have lights running through the mantle so at night it casts a nice glow up the slate.I am not through with the mantle decor yet. That's still a work in progress.

Now my questions are, what would you do with these windows? I am thinking cream colored wood blinds and some sort of curtains to the side hanging from the top of the wall close to the cieling.

Here is the rest of the room so you have a better idea. I still need to shop for pillows and more accesories though.

Also we are going to move the light fixture in the dining room and center it over the table, I am thinking of just painting it black or do you think some other kind of fixture would look better (pendant or black pendants hanging from a track?

All suggestions are welcome and thanks for looking.

You did good! If we end up staying in our present house with the ugly as sin monster of a fireplace, it looks like there may even be hope for it. Am showing this to DH.

I also forgot to ask, what color curtains would you use? Green, cream, Tan?

do you have an account on photobucket? if not it's free, go there sign up, and then you can upload the photos from your computer. On the main page (after you set up an account) you will see 3 tabs, and you will probably us the upload photos from my PC option, then just below that are 3 buttons that say browse..click on each one of those one at a time, find your photos on your computer and then tell it to upload (when you are through adding all the photos you want). Once uploaded there will be 4 links directly beneath each photo you have uploaded...you will click on the 3rd one down (HMTL tag is what is says) higlight it or however you do a copy option with your mouse...once you have it copied, you will open back up the post from GW that you were typing then paste it right into text box.... before you submit the GW post you can preview and you will actually see it. The baking soda reacts immediately with the acidic ingredients. Its effect will be gone in two hours. But I'm not sure it really has all that much leavening effect in heavy fruit cakes! What will remain from the reaction is the neutralizing of some acidity in the molasses and brown sugar. Baking powder usually is double-acting, meaning part of its action is heat-activated, and can probably still be counted on after the delay. I would mix a quarter of the recipe and bake it in the paper pans if I wanted to test them. It looks easy to divide that way.

Thanks, everyone! Moxie, no stencil. I primed it with Kilz, painted the cream color (which is the cream I use on all my trim, mouldings), and then using a level, a yardstick and a pencil, made the markings. I googled how to do the harlequin design - the math in that was the most difficult part! My husband helped me to hold the level as the fireplace is as wide as I am tall! I used a foam brush (the ones with the straight edge, not sure what their intended purpose is) and then did some touchups with a small, flat artist brush for the tan color. Measuring and marking was absolutely the hardest part. The rest was surprisingly simple.

Linda, that's lovely! The addition of the black in the mirror frame, etc. adds so much. Small suggestion: when posting Befores and After pics, start of with something like "This is a Before of the fireplace area:", and then add that photo. Add more info on the next pic before you add it. This just makes it easier to look at things if the viewers are not familiar with the room. And, I don't think that it's possible to add more pics more than a few hours (or even less, I'm not sure) after you've first started a thread.

Wow! What a gorgeous, dramatic difference! I think cream-colored wood blinds with simple panels hung on each window would be nice. I'd do a decorative pole-type drapery rod, fairly beefy in diameter in wood or iron. And I think sage-colored sueded panels would be pretty. Or maybe even a deep copper color.

Oh boy, I LOVE that fireplace. I'm for sure showing this to my husband...I hate ours. I'd remove it if I could afford it. But yours is just beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!

The brick wasn't bad but wow...the new fireplace looks wonderful! I like the mantle, too. Was the brick taken down or was it covered up?

All your plants, are they real or fake?

The plants are fake for now and we just covered up the brick with a coat of mud and tiled right over it. DH made the mantle.

Auntjen, that's what I had envisioned in my mind. I guess I just wanted some reassurance.

Fireplace is stunning. Had you considered treating the two windows as one and putting one tie back panel on the left side of the left window and one tie back panel on the right side of the right window. Still do the shades as well.

I was thinking that if you put panels on both sides of each window, your art work in the middle of the windows might look cramped. This is kind of the idea I'm talking about (on the left side of the bed-I'm assuming there's probably a window on the right side of the bed with the same treatment).

Yes -- quite beefy (LOL!) dark rods -- hung quite close to the ceiling would work with the suede curtains suggested by Jen.

Consider painting the small table by the single chair to satin black (distressed) to work a bit better with the "heavier" visual weight of the other furniture and colors.

Perhaps switch the tablecloths to a simple creamy white for the summer months? For the winter months perhaps switch to a heavier deep red to work with other reds in the dining room? And co-ordinating cushions?

A stronger (visually!) black chandelier would look amazing over the dining table -- try removing the glass globes and adding simple chandelier shades and lower it so that it has better contact with the table.

Really like the fireplace!

Only suggestion I have is to cut or remove some of the top branches of the tree in the corner. It shouldn't be touching the ceiling since it makes the ceiling appear lower than it really is.
I would suggest it be no taller than the top of the window trim.

Gorgeous fireplace! Please tell us more. Did you do this yourself? Did you tile over the brick or do a demo?

Would love to see the accent lighting at night : ))

Wow! Nice job! Very impressive. I would do similar curtains to ones posted above in a color matching the walls.
