My dog gave me such a scare ( a tad long )

I adore dogs - I Have 3 of them . 15,14 & 3. Ellie is my precious Rottie . DH & I Have a soft spot in our hearts for old dogs - so I found Ellie online when she was 10 years old. She was 25 lbs. overweight , sickly ,had arthritis , was left home all day alone and walked once every day. She was pretty much ignored. When I went to look at her - she looked like she lost the spark of life. The lady wanted $5 for her , but gave her to me free just to get rid of her. We took her , exercised her , slimmed her down ,showered her with love and attention ,bought her special treats and let her be a real "dog" . In a couple months - that spark was back - her little stubby tail never stops wagging and she's the happiest dog alive.She's got a shot at a second life ! Rotts usually live between 8 & 10 years - Ellie is 14 ! She scared me Tuesday night , I could hear her rustling around all night . I got up ,only to find her in pain & her back legs weren't working. I just freaked out. I thought she had a stroke or something . We carried her into the vet the next morning - I was so afraid she'd have to be put to sleep , but after a complete exam - it turned out she has a herniated disc.She got Prednisone & is doing alot better today. She can walk and her tail is back to wagging non-stop. I hope God lets me have her another year ... she sure deserves it. Sorry for the long post ...I'm just so thankfull !

How special that you were able to see the love that Ellie needed and were willing to take her. Most people probably would have passed on taking a dog that age and she would probably have been put to sleep. I hope you get many more years of love and life from her.

Thank you Barb , that compliment means so much to me. Puppies are fantastic .... but it's the old dogs that DH and I love. We'll help more older dogs ,you can be sure.
I'm just so glad that Ellie will be okay ... every dog I have means the world to me. This is Ellie .... about a year ago . Is she spoiled or what ! LOL

So THIS is what the turkey cannon is! I saw the pictures of the chickie on the grill over on the Discussions side and couldn't figure out what it was! What a hoot! Adele definitely gets the prize for perfect swap. Jessy, you deserve every bit of this package! LOL at the opening ceremony--I don't know how that would have gone over at my house! If you haven't seen the pix of her chickie on the barbie--you have to see the bikini shot. It's hilarious! Great job Adele, and enjoy your spotted dick Jessy!

I won't comment about the fibroids and enlargement of your uterus, but I've been an ENT nurse for 22 years and I urge you to seek a 2nd opinion prior to having surgery on your sinuses. Have you had a CT of the sinus yet? or at least a limited CT or a sinus series? There is no way (no matter what any doctor may tell you) to tell if it is your sinuses without one of these studies. The CT is the best. There are many ENT specialists who jump the gun, performing sinus surgery that isn't needed. It's fast and easy money for them, and many of them take advantage of their patient's "ignorance" of his/her sinuses. I do not mean ignorance in any sort of demeaning way, but we are all ignorant at some point about certain areas until we are educated about them. So, ask questions, get studies, and don't let someone start "reaming" out your sinuses at the drop of a hat. We have a friend who had sinus surgery with a clear sinus x-ray (he found out later) and he was left with meningitis after the surgeon knicked his brain case and he developed a cerebral spinal fluid leak. He is now deaf in his right ear and suffered from vertigo for 7 years until another ENT surgeon finally had to cut his nerve of hearing to control it (and this, I might add, doesn't always work). He suffered with this for 7 years because the 2nd surgeon waited until the statute of limitations was up for a law suit from the first surgery. They do stick together most of the time. Andierut

I am so sorry for your loss. It takes a long time to get over such a loss. Sometimes I feel you never really do. I had a dog, Pal, a Collie Shepard mix, that had to be put to sleep when we were both 10 years old. We grew up together. When my older siblings picked on me I could go to her, hug her and cry and she would comfort me like I was her pup. I still think of her with a mix of good memories and sadness at her passing. That was 52 years ago. I have had lots of dogs since then and miss them all. It took 2 years of grieving for the last one before I got my current dog. I swore I would never go through that pain again and then I saw a picture of Elvira and couldn't resist. I call her my "Soul Mutt" because she has been the closest to me since my first dog. She is 13 and not in good health, we take it one day at a time. I don't know what I am going to do when I lose her. I know that is a part of having a bond with a dog but it is hard. Plllog- I do see your point. The only severe (not extreme) alerts I have received late at night had to do with flash flooding, which doesn't affect me but very well could affect some of my low lying neighbors, and severe thunderstorms which produce high winds and large hail. I personally keep these alerts activated. Straight line winds can and do cause a lot of damage BUT, it isn't something I'm prepared to wake up in the middle of the night to suddenly batten down the hatches for. Large hail however? If my phone buzzes in the middle of the night for severe thunderstorms with straight line winds and producing large damaging hail, I will get up, get my outside dogs and bring them inside. Whether that warning was sent at 2 PM or 2 am, my response would be the same. Protect my animals. I guess what I'm saying is that, at least for me and the rather extreme weather we have around here, I still would want to be notified, even if it is the middle of the night so I can take steps to minimize damage and protect my pets and/or property. I can't testify to what qualifies as severe weather in other parts of the country, I only know my own stomping grounds. I've never been annoyed or awoken by a useless weather report. Every one I have received was not only valid, but acted on immediately to protect my family, property or pets, regardless of the hour. I could see how getting a winter advisory in the middle of the night when you are safe and warm in your bed and knew a winter storm was coming could be an annoyance though, it just isn't my experience in my part of the country.

OH TMG I hope she is feeling better now!! She is so pretty!!! And look at her sweethead on the pillow. Dogs gotta love them. We have two here.

Growing up we had a dog Chauncy, and when we found out my Dad was allergic to dogs, we had to find a new home for him. The lady that adopted him spoiled him rotten...letting him sleep in bed with her and all kinds of other things. Made it easier for us knowing that he was in a home that loved him.

Ellie is back to her old self . ( Thanking God ) The only problem I'm having with her now is trying to keep her from not moving around ! She's just such a happy dog - every little thing excites her LOL . She's supposed to rest. We'll be back at the vet Wednesday for a check up .
I'm just so relieved .........

What a precious dog and what a moving story.......what a wonderful person you are. I believe in the power of prayer.........you have made this dog so happy........and in her golden years.....you have made such a big difference......when she does go to Heaven, you can rest assure that she will continue to wag that tail.....

I do believe that dogs live "in the moment" but I also believe that they remember enough of crappy former lives to truely appreciate wonderful new lives. We have six rescues (yorkies) who were either abused, neglected, or otherwise traumatized. It is so wonderful to see them come out of their shells and become ... DOGS.

((hugs)) to you!! I can just imagine how anxious you were, until you got Ellie to the vet. I'm so glad she's feeling better.

Glad Ellie is doing better. I had a retired show dog ( foxhound ) I adopted at 4 yrs old. he had back problems too.I took this 70 lb dog that couldn't walk to emergency Vet by myself!! I HATED when he was on predisone!! He at a WHOLE BAG of SEALED raisins while he was on it. Can't tell you what the after effects of THAT were like LOL

You did a great job with Ellie and gave her many happy years she wouldn'd have had!!

First, thank you for saving her from such a sad life. People like you need to be rewarded somehow.

I feel your fear at the thought of having to put her down.
I had to do that to my 17 year old pekingese last year.
I am still not over it. Don't think I will be for a long time.

Enjoy every moment with her that you can.
My hope is that she lives several more years!
Her life only just started when you found each other!

I have a corgi (below) who is prone to back problems because of his build - long back and low to the ground. I got him at age two through Corgi-Aid, a rescue organization (he's 10 now).

I see many stories like yours - an older dog that no one wants anymore cuz they're not the fun puppies anymore. I too, love older dogs and commend you, Kathy, for your dedication to them.

Dear Woodie is gettin' old (like me) but we still have lots of fun together.
