diy no-mo-oak....pics one year later
Comments (67)That is one amazing DIY. You guys are so clever and creative! That soapstone is killing me -- I'm trying to touch that incredible vein through my monitor. Now I have to ask -- what is on the other side of the kitchen, beyond your angled wall and little table-n-chairs set? It looks like more chairs. What's that room, if I may ask? I love your trash can in your island. I love all of the clever ways you added space...the soap pullout, the angled tray cabinet, etc. Brilliant! Congrats -- enjoy it!...See MoreOff with the 1952 aluminum 60 years later!! (pics)
Comments (50)Basic gist--redid entire porch/railing. Kept original windows, reglazed them all! Still repairing 4 of the 46 windows on this beast of a house (you can see today's glazing project in the side view--top right window has a new/old piece of glass and then gets it's storm on). All new storms. New paint job. We have 16 pairs of almost-the-right-size and totally right look right shutters, but still working on matching the hardware to what's already on there. Original house had shutters on all three sides (will be dark green to break up all the white). That project is taking a back seat as we are redoing the back deck and mud room this fall. Hope you like it!! It's a labor of love, that's for sure. I've dubbed this house "Special Order"--you can't get ANYTHING off the rack for this thing! Even try replacing storm doors. Special order due to height and triple the cost. Ugh. Sarah...See MoreBacksplash needed, a year later.
Comments (12)Thanks for all of your praise and suggestions. I am also used to the painted white wall, and as the house is now full of our "personality", it doesn't seem so bland. herbflavor- Thx. We thought of stainless, and also of back-painted glass, but we have tried to warm up our modern home with natural wood and stone and worry that these very sleek options take us back to cooler again. palimpsest- thanks for the fireplace suggestion! We tried to save an old redwood joist from the house for the mantel, but it sat outside through a rainy season and got termites! Using some vertical grain fir (windows and railing) is a great, cheap option! northcarolina- We have a little throw rug that catches most of the drips from the sink to fridge to stove. When we wipe up spills there is no problem. The floor shows no wear. We clean it weekly with ECOVER floor soap, not very diluted. It's almost like re-oiling it. In two places we had a dog vomit and a visiting mini dog pee that went unnoticed. there is a watermark from both. But our floor has a lot of character- so I don't notice it anymore....See MoreHoned marble countertops 3 years later? Photos? Experience?
Comments (50)Hi again rinskin, Go to the second link I sent you and then click on some of the links that branch out from that. These are all designer/bloggers and they all recommend honed AND some are getting them rehoned from time to time. One designer said she bought hers honed but wants them honed again for an even more matte finish. They all talk about living with marble and the fact that it will etch and that is a part of its beauty....if you love marble. If you prefer the pristine look and glossiness, go with quartzite or polished granite. It sounds like you want the look of honed marble. Don't be afraid, come over to the dark side....lol ;)...See MoreKristi
