A question about bar lotion

Hi every one, I have been lurking,and have read the posting about the bar lotion, which i found to be very helpful.

My question is tis,

Can you make a lotion with out using cocoa, or shea butter,will any "butter" work?

Thank you for your help,i am so happy i found tis site.

I don't make these but this is a start for you.

What you need is a lye calculator.

These can be found on the web, either free or purchased; I have a purchased one, try "MountainSage".

There (or anywhere else that has a lye calculator) you can put in which ever butter you'd like to use. It's personal preference really.

You'll may need a mentor, till you get the hang of superfatting etc.

Coconut and Shea butters are common favourites for those who make these bars.

If I understand you, your goal is to make lotion bars, not soap. Assuming I am correct, there is no need for the lye calculator. And any butter you like will work. However, butters vary in texture, so that will affect the finished product. You will have to experiment a bit to see how different butters feel.

Shauna, thanks for mentioning the "Gardener's Clean" waterless hand scrub. I'll have to keep an eye for it. What I use for a hand lotion is Herbacin Kamille. I find it works really at replenishing the moisture loss. Then to help heal cuts I use Aloe Vera gel, it helps speed up how long it takes for cuts and nicks to heal. For bug spray I usually use whatever has a high concentration of deet. I did find that Watkins sells a bug repellant that is a lotion and it works well. I usually use that one on my face as it smell like body lotion. A nicer than the stench of bug spray. Oh I also have a bottle called Marigold Horse Spray made by EQyss grooming products. There is no deet or chemicals in it so I can use it on the dogs. It smells nice too and seems to last fairly long. Syreeta

Thanks for all your replies. I was originally thinking of the 10' beds would be subdivided into 3, 3' beds, but you've all made me think that's not wise. That would rule out using the tractor and tiller mid season. Given that my tractor is 7' wide and tiller is 5' wide, I think I'm stuck with making the width of bed + walkway equal a total of 7' at least. Jay has given me some ideas for how the bed itself can be varied a bit, but ultimately the "pitch" of my beds (from one front edge to another) should stay at 7 or 7.5'. I'm definitely going to look into getting a bed shaper. I see that a close by equipment dealer has one for sale for $950. Maybe I can find an old cultivator and just get the bed shaping discs made for it? Chris

Salve & Solid Lotion Bar

thank you terri and cajungardener, thats exactly the information i was looking for. i want to do a healing product with infused oil (calendula, comfrey and other herbs) but not sure whether to do it as a salve or lotion bar, now i know :) another question for cajungardener, when you infuse your herbs in oil for salve, do you do them individually or just mixed individually infused oil? i am thinking of infusing the herbs together to make this salve unless there is disadvantage to it. if i do it separately, i will probably end up with a significant amount of oil ... i am planning on using olive oil (promace grade) to infuse herbs with for its long shelf life, are there better options? thanks, kay

Lotion bar loses scent when cooled and hard...

EO's will evaporate quickly anyway, no matter what you do, as they are all volatile. They don't last. It helps if you wrap each bar in plastic to help seal it until it is sold. Its the only way the EO scent will last. It will still evaporate if left in the air for long but at least it will smell when you sell/give it to someone until they unwrap it. Fragrance oils are not organic, but they are made to last a long time, and they do, but you have to use a lot. I make large batches with about 1200g of fat and I use about 15ml of fragrance oil per batch. It smells overpowering right at first, but that fades quickly as it ages. This year I am going organic. I am making my own organic colour and switching to EO's, but like I said above, I will have to seal each bar individually in plastic to keep the scent but its a lot of trouble.

Thank you guys, and yes, i will be making lotion,not soap.How will i know how much butter to use,do i still need the calculator?
I thought it was equal amounts of each, say,2 oz,2 oz,2 oz,plus a wax,about 5 oz.Is this right?

No need for the calculator. I use equal parts oil, beeswax & butter, by weight. I get a pretty good result.
