My bungalow kitchen is almost finished!

Here's a glimpse of my almost finished bungalow kitchen. Woodharbor custom and Castpointe semi-custom cabinets, Shaker inset doors in coastal white. Light fixtures from Rejuvenation. Minas Black soapstone. John Boos butcherblock in the varnique finish.

Great pic. Would love to see more. What year is your bungalow? Is this DIY ? You know how the Kitchen Forum is...we love details and pics LOL. c

Thanks Breezy! It means a lot coming from you since I tend to respect and agree with so many of your opinions and design opinions! I love your vent hood - wish I'd thought of or seen something like that when I was looking! I was just thinking earlier that I can't wait to see your finished kitchen! I know I will love it. Unfortunately, I do not remember the stain I used on the floors. I know it was a combination of two darker stains - one might have had a coffeeish name. They painted samples on our floors and I picked based on those, so didn't really pay much attention to the names! The cabinets came painted white. It was the brighter white that Holiday cabinets offered. This is the reason that my kitchen is STILL just almost finished. The paint job on the doors is AWFUL! You can't see it in pics, but where the stiles meet on the doors is splitting on just about every door and drawer front. Not just a line, but splitting apart. This is on top of numerous mars, dents, and nicks on teh doors in various places. We are getting all new drawer fronts and doors that the KD is ordering from a different cabinet company (Downsview), but he has TOTALLY been dragging his feet on it. Besides the doors, he STILL hasn't put in the little fillers around my appliance cabinet. I'm so mad - he has lied to us over and over again about whether or not he ordered it and why it was delayed - blah blah blah. Luckily, I have our builder who uses this KD A LOT and owes him a big check for another job. Essentially, he is not paying the KD until he shows him the proof of order for my new cabinet door/drawer fronts. I also am FINALLY getting all of my drawer inserts and organizers a week from today. I do have my shades, but b/c of the issues above I still have no glass in the top of my cabinets and don't feel fully done! I WILL post pictures when all is done. Thanks again Breezy!

Yes, the hood is a Zephyr Tamburo. 400 CFMs. A piece of sculpture! So yesterday I ran around looking at tile. I picked up 8 more of the bumps and kept looking. At one point I had a vision of medium gray glass tiles, medium gray grout, grass green walls. I picked up a quart of grass green, a couple of other paint samples, and came home. Taped a sq. ft to the wall. A resounding NO. They looked brown,which would be ok except that if the soapstone darkens (which it will, I suppose, eventually) the tiles will really not work. It just looked off. Bummer. Last night I was up till all hours doing a glass tile search to find something that was less than the $27-39/sq ft I had been seeing around here. Will report in at the next round. The handles and shelves went in today. The first thing I did was start to fill the bookshelves. that horrible Minidata notebook is full of recipe clippings I will never live long enough to try. Need to organize it and maybe do something with that ugly notebook cover. A shelf of art books and then we'll see. Second thing I did was put the tea tins back on the shelf over the sink where we are used to finding them. That shelf will be usable stuff, the ones above, display for my antique tins: a counterpoint to all the sleekness. I printed out labels for the 5 mailboxes: one each for DH & me, one for my mother - whose bills I take care of, one for outgoing mail, and one for random stuff. I will have to nag DH to sort the mail instead of leaving it in a pile on the island. Grrrrrr. New leaf. Two weekly papers came in today: the one I haven't read yet is in my box. Finally, I picked up the barstools I had ordered at Crate & Barrel. $89 each and they SPIN!! What fun! I can sit and read my cookbooks at the island while I contemplate what I am going to make for dinner, instead of standing at the counter and reading. DH can sit with his laptop or pay bills at the island instead of upstairs in the 2" of space on his cluttered desk. He will do this while I am on my teaching trips, no doubt. The kitchen table will be a while in coming, although we ordered it. Thanks for the input on the tiles; they work en principe - mais pas en rÃ©alitÃ©. On continue. Tomorrow, if we are lucky, the crown molding goes up and maybe the light rail. Off now to get a decent night's sleep - or what is left of the night.

I'm always thrilled to see a green kitchen that speaks to me. We seem to have a few elements in common! I'm using Duron's 'Rugged Trail' on my uppers. A very, very subtle gray green that resolves gray on the monitors. I'm repainting the lowers with its complementary 'Backpack' soon, since the natural light changes 'Rugged Trail' into something I abhor. I made my own butcher block countertop, which I've yet to stain. My floors are a chocolate ... something. I have to look it up. Wide plank maple or oak, I'd guess. Here's a pic of my uppers & you can see my cabinets and floor: Here is my countertop: I am also making my own credenza, of which I only have a "before" picture, because there isn't any after yet! :) In the meanwhile, the stacked cabs are more storage Yours gives me great inspiration! Thanks. (OH! BTW. Someday I'm replacing the doors I've collected from reuse centers with an inset door. But that's another fortune!)

Well, this is dropping and so it's time to take a moment and thank everyone for their feedback. I got a big kick out of everyone's comments. It's interesting to look at the photos through someone else's eyes (in a manner of speaking). I appreciate all the kind words and compliments. I can't wait to have our shelves in. Then the pendant and hood will both look better and less "stranded". I can also then get things put in their "right places" and get some additional color into the room with displays of my pottery collection (a growing thing). I really appreciate all the help BEFORE the big reveal. If I had been left to my own devices I would have had stools at the end of the stove run out in the way of the aisle. I would have missed out on soapstone. I would have never heard of NeverMT. I would have lower cabs instead of drawers and pull outs everywhere I could. I would have done uppers instead of open shelves. I never would have shopped around for cork flooring. I probably would not have heard of Schoolhouse Electric (this impacts my front and back porches and my carport as well). I would have never driven all the way across the state to get my Domsjo and Numerar from IKEA. I would not have ZONES. I would never have dared to sink my fridge in the wall so it was flush with the counters. I would undoubtedly have a 4x4 square backsplash (but I hear those are coming back "in"). :) I have learned a ton here. I have seen a lot of really cool ideas. I will have some more of them before I am done. I will have a charging station and a pet center in my back entry way if it kills me. This forum is filled with great people. While we don't ALWAYS get along, who does? I don't get along with my family all the time. I don't see eye to eye with my coworkers all the time. This community has been very helpful and welcoming. It is a 1923 Chicago-style brick bungalow, designed to fit long, narrow lots. That is my neighbor's bungalow through the kitchen window.

Not DIY. We found a wonderful construction company that prides itself on working with vintage houses. The lead carpenter who oversaw everything everyday was wonderful. He's finishing up some shelves that will flank the sink, and then the kitchen will be pretty much done. Then I'll post more pictures.

Charming in every sense of the word. The curtains are perfect, and it's like stepping back in time to a wonderful homey kitchen but with all the sleek modern conveniences!

The curtains have bunches of cherries, bunches of small flowers and a fruit that could be apples or peaches. You can't see in the picture, but the yellow rickrack trims the bottom of the curtains.

The dishtowel is from Martha Stewart's Kmart line. I've owned both the curtains and the dish towels for over three years, all in anticipation of this kitchen remodel.

Love the soapstone perimeter with butcher block island . . . I'm ordering my cabinets this week and have that combination planned also with warm white. I'm so grateful to everyone on GW that has posted photos. It's so nice to be able to SEE what ideas look like for real and not just on paper!

Love the vintage fabric details!

The soapstone is 3cm. The butcher block is thicker.

Love it! So bright and cheerful! I agree about the curtains and dishtowels-very charming. I would love to see what you put in your corner cabinet when you get it decorated-I have one too, and don't know what to put in it.

I'm still working on the corner cabinet. The top shelf has an espresso set that was my grandma's on it. Yesterday the carpenter installed four little shelves flanking the sink. I'm also putting some decorative stuff there. Crossing my fingers that Mother's Day presents are in the works to accessorize.
