I suspect a zip tie would provide very tight support to the graft but would definitely need to be clipped off after the graft calluses over. They have no elasticity and would girdle the wood certainly. You could take electrical tape and wind it on backward very tightly. Foil is not good enough. You will need to do something to protect the wood from drying out and to keep the cleft from getting water in it. There are a lot better options than candle wax. Buy some pruning sealer or even buy a wax toilet flange gasket to seal the exposed wood on the graft.
