Finally Painting the Outside of My House (pictures)

Hi, I had posted on here last fall about help with house colors, and Squirrelheaven was terrific about putting different colors on my picture of my house. I can't find what happened to that thread (remember I asked if someone could do "Disney" colors on my house? Well, today the painters are finally here!

This is what our house looked like when we first bought it two years ago:

Since then we've redone the entire front yard, added tons and tons of soil and zoysia (drought resistant), added a new front walkway, knocked down the garage:

Replaced all the cedar siding on that side with new cedar siding (that was expensive!)

And here's what it looked like yesterday.

Today, the painting started. Here's the color scheme:

It took about nine different cans of color before we and the decorator my smart DH urged me ask for help (she's also my across the street neighbor and had a case of the horrors when I asked her what she thought of me painting the house pumpkin-I think she decided it was in both our best interests if she helped so she wouldn't be staring at "the pumpkin house" for the next ten years!). The color we picked is Valspar's St. Francis Hotel Clay Angel. That's a mouthful! It's one of the historic colors. The door and shutters will be "artichoke".

That stone on the front is *insanely* hard to match/coordinate with. In fact, we painted the brick chimney white because it didn't match the rock, either (not even close).

It is so much fun to get a facelift. It took me months to drive up to my house and not smile with glee at the difference. Keep us posted!

Jackie, I'm glad it turned out well. You did 600% more than most people would do. I think the likely response to a job of that scope would be to cut the roses to the ground. Some would survive, some would probably die, and others would be malingerers, a shadow of their former selves. This saga isn't over yet. The question is how long it will take them to recover to the point of resembling themselves again. We'd love to hear updates.

I just discovered the Vintage Market and Design chalk paint yesterday at the "home base" store by the same name in Albuquerque. This is the shop where this paint brand and finishes were developed.My head is swimming after browsing the shop with all the design possibilities! Lol! Bac717, you've done a lovely job on the chairs! Have you watched the YouTube instruction videos on this brand of paint? I've found them very helpful. Also, I'm not sure if you are aware but VMD does not recommend a wax as the final finish for your furniture but one of their clear coats over their brand of wax. I started my first piece last night and am excited about many more to come and I am so happy that this shop is local for me! I'm not affiliated at all with this company just an excited customer. Sue

The floors were a big mess when we got in the house! The front room had really dirty carpet. The dining room and kitchen had old sheet vinyl on top of linoleum tiles. The back den was half ceramic tiles, half REALLY dirty industrial carpet and both of those were laid on top of more linoleum tiles. It was a MESS! We knew we wanted to rip all of that out and unify the entire space with one dark flooring. We were looking at wood, but it was out of our price range. We looked at laminate but heard horror stories of laminates in kitchens and having water damage. After talking to lots of people, doing lots of research, we ended up with a Vinyl Plank that looks like wood. We got it from Home Depot. It's called Traffic Master Allure and the color we purchased was Dark Walnut. We LOVE it. It is so easy to clean and keep up! It was easy enough to install that my family was able to help us do it in just under a week in the entire front part of our house. It was in our budget (which was low) - only $1.96 a sq ft. We had floor installers come in to give us estimates on putting in transition pieces between the carpet in the bedrooms and the hallway, and they thought it was wood it looks so good! They were amazed that it was vinyl. I'm in North OC, right on the border of LA county/OC. most of the homes in my neighborhood look like yours and mine. 1980? we just cut down a huge tree next to the driveway and will redo ours. I love those pavers you did , but w/our roof and the stone accent on the front of our house, it might be too much. I'll just stick to concrete, tint it, and maybe do a brick ribbon around the edges. your roof looks almost identical to what we had. (see pics below) Wehad ours redone two years ago and went w/the charcoal cement spanish tiles, but you can see the original tiles on a rental we have in the same neighborhood. Here's a pic of it after I redid the yard in a xeriscape design. I did very similar cobbles in the walkway. This is the original cement tile roof that we used to have. (my stucco was very spanish looking in gold and copper!) This house I painted in DE Swiss Coffee (or maybe Behr! I always forget which one I used) and a regular black trim Here's the before! a beauty, eh? lol More of a recent pic after the succulents have grown. you can see the garage doors are almost like yours. And, you can see how Swiss Coffee doesn't look as bright white like the garage doors. I think it's time I head down there and clean up the yard, paint the door a new color, and think about painting those garage doors. If you have a similar color roof, you can get an idea of what the colors will look like. Better shot of the back area so you can see how the Swiss Coffee looks w/the black around the patio overhang. I like the contrast. Let me show you my own front door area. Once I changed my roof tiles, I had to lose the gold and copper coloring. This iwas the before. If you notice, we both have those trim accent pieces above the garage door. on the previous, I chose to paint them all the same color, but on this new pic, you can see how I did both colors. (like yours is now) so depending on the new colors you choose, you could do the two tone colors, or paint it all the same color As for the photoshop, I use my Mac Desktop Preview and just copy and paste on to my photos. Sherwin Williams has ColorSnap App that will let you try out colors onto your photos. maybe try that one?

Yep, the shutter sitting on the ground is painted Valspar's Artichoke. I wasn't sure about it at first but I like it a lot now. I have a bunch of new shutters that are "ready to paint" that the painter will do either tomorrow or on saturday, depending how fast they get through the house.

wow. you are paiting the exterior chimney. Can you do that?? won't it peel?

Yep, you can paint brick. It's *very* popular in the south to paint brick. YOu just have to pressure wash it first, let it dry completely, use a really good primer, let that dry completely, and you're good to go for years.

The chimney's going to be the same color as the trim, a semi gloss white. It won't look as glossy as the trim because it's so rough to begin with, but it will go. I was aghast at first at the idea of painting the brick, but it looks so much better already with just the primer on it I know now it's the right thing to do. Helluva leap of faith, though, because once you paint brick, you're pretty well committed.

The whole house is primed, now. I'll post more pix tomorrow once the color's up. :)

We're putting it up for sale once I finish updating it. My DH works up in Alpharetta now and we're planning to move about 1/2 an hour north. A lot of our friends and family are up there, also-they keep joking "come to the dark side, move to Alpharetta," LOL.

Thank you so much for the compliment, it feels really good to finally get this house looking like it should...

ooh, hey, painters just got here, cool. We're going to go watch the 4th of July parade, when we get back I think there should be some color on the house. Unless they're doing the trim, first...

Wow! It looks very good. By the ooops, do you mean the top window that is missing shutter. If so, I think I only spotted it because I was looking for somethng wrong.
Anyways, I think it looks great but I do think you might need a front door that has some color.

Well, I thought it was the shutter also, but I looked back at the before pictures and it was like that then. I can't find anything else. It's looks good!

I think it looks wonderful, except the front door almost disappears into the white paint. Could you possibily paint the doors pumpkin? It would really "pop"!

I do remember Lindy and I working on this, with golds as I recall. What a difference! It looks like a brand new house. You must be totally thrilled : )

Thanks, squirrelheaven, I am thrilled. Yep, the door was accidentally painted semi gloss white like the trim instead of the artichoke on the shutters.

Also, the shutters on the far left of the house as you look at it are too short for the windows. I assumed all the windows except for the new ones on the side were the same size-but the ones on the second story to the left are about 6" taller. Oh well, it can't be that bad if you eagle eyed ladies missed it. Yeah, the weird shutter in the middle-can't really do anything about it except space the gap between the two windows...

My neighbor says to leave the door white and just put a big green wreath on the door (if I wasn't planning on selling it that door would be pumpkin tomorrow!!!LOL)

I'm thinking in my next house (maybe next year) I want to do a pumpkin colored dining room. My husband says that's fine as long as I hire a guy to paint because I'm the messiest painter *ever*.

Looks wonderful -- very fresh! :)

For a quick way to draw the viewer's eye to the pretty white door -- simply add a dark-colored door knocker!

Great transformation! I love the artichoke on the shutters...I was planning on doing Charleston Green for mine but am now rethinking it and wanting to try the artichoke.
