Wow! I love everything! The cat mold is too cool...and you did a great job on the horse "cameos" too. Good luck w/your soaps at the shop too. Hope you don't mind....I linked to your photo through my reply. If you want to do this when you post a message - first get your photo up on your AOL site and then right click on the photo--then click on properties and copy the photo's URL. When you compose your message here - add the following code:

replace the ( and ) with . Make sure you have a space between the img and src, and don't forget the quotes--you need those too.

Okay--reporting back the results, so far, of my extreme measures taken in eradicating 'Southern Blight' on several of my hosta! The one-eyed crown I removed from the 'Golden Sculpture', unearthed and removed all leaves, cutting the crown back severely, and soaked in a bleach solution for an hour and then changed off the water every two days--is doing great! The remaining eyes, in the original pot show no evidence of the 'blight', with that eye removed! I did spritz full-strength bleach on the soil surface of those left in the pot, as well. So far, the one-eyed crown is producing 5 additional eyes and three of them are already sending up leaves. So far there is no sign of the 'blight' on this one, (these eyes) either! Now--the 'American Icon' that I also dealt with severely, and did not unpot, but in this case I just sprayed straight bleach on the base of the petioles, and surrounding soil, and left it on for a couple of mins. before pouring on a good amount of water--so far, so good! I've also sprinkled corn meal on the soil surface and watered it in well! The 'S&S' and 'Titanic' I treated in the same way and also have added corn-meal fairly heavily and watered in--so far, so good! Lost almost all the petioles and eyes on those, but one eye (that was decimated) is sending up a small leaf! They did get repeated straight bleach sprayings after pouring on the 10% solution seemed to not be working! The 'Alex Summers' planted in a raised bed--I removed on Thursday and also removed all the soil and soaked over-night in a 10% bleach solution--I have rinsed and soaked a couple of hours in plain water and potted them up, divided with cornmeal also heavily applied. Every leaf is turning a bright orange! On the one pot of 3 eyes I have just, today, cut the petioles back severely. I've left them planted to see what comes of it! The other two eyes are potted and I'm letting them play out the dying off of the leaves, in hopes they will also reflush! I started out with one eye of this one, from Hosta Direct, and had 5 eyes this year--3 summers later!!! I really am not very hopeful about those two! The roots looked so fragile when I removed them from the bleach water!! I've also done the same thing with another hosta that has shown the nematodes--my 'Maui Buttercups'!!!! I'm just sick about that one, especially! I started out with one eye two summers ago, and now I had three this year! It was looking so good! I also dug it up yesterday--removed all the soil, all leaves (cut them to the crown) and separated all three eyes and soaked them overnight in bleach water! They, too, looked fragile this morning! I've potted them up--set them apart from all other planting areas and will keep a close eye on them for a couple of years. I did test a leaf in the water, (that was also soaked in bleach last night) as I do with any nematode infestation and there seemed to be no 'nematode' life evident, today! How far reaching was the bleach in effectiveness on the nematodes, remains to be seen. And, will the hosta in both situations, having been soaked overnight in bleach 8-10%, survive and thrive--will also remain to be seen! Oh, I got the idea to bleach for nematodes from 'Pietre'! :o) I'll keep you posted--whether you want to know or not! ;o/

Looks great! Early Summer type of weather is finally starting up here tomorrow. This is what I want my plants to have accomplished by Friday... All the bananas to put out almost an entire leaf My bougainvillea to start getting a little greener My white mandevillea to start climbing My geraniums to start flowering again (all the flowers rotted off because of the endless rain!) My mexican petunias to green up. I definitely have some high expectations, but with the 80s forecasted, I think that my plants can get it done! I'm so happy to see that their wont be a chill in the air all day anymore! Good luck! -Alex

i was saying "crazy inventor" because i was playing with the thought of powering a heat pump with a windmill etc.... you could probably get it to work, if you invested enough time and money (every husband's (not) dream - unless you lucked out and he is either rich or an inventor who would thrive on the project to create a self contained, cooling environment for your plants).... however, low tech is probably the better way to go. think of ancient roman architecture for example. they used a bunch of tricks to make the mediterranean more livable. one that comes to mind is a water feature underneath the window that supplies a rooms air. this freshened up the air and cooled it. (maybe try a fan blowing across a bucket of water to see if it would work.) - a stray thought that goes with this concept was that, in the desert, people hang nets to catch condensation. in reverse, you could use a net of a wicking material and use it to evaporate water.... another (greek?) thing was the use of porous clay pots to hold water - the evaporation kept it cool. - I've been using clay pots for wicking, clogging the bottom holes and putting them in a dish of water. now, if that dish were clay as well, i am thinking that would cool the entire container as well as the plants. i'm sure there is more. but i am drawing a blank and should be getting back to work. when googling "cooling a house naturally" the suggestions were airflow (especially removing hot air and replacing it with cool air at night), painting the roof white, using awnings and shutters, planting trees etc. common denominator being to reduce the impact of the sun.

Well, 'Catalonia' is certainly handsome -- congratulations -- as is 'Condesa de Santiago'. I am a total sucker for gold/yellow reverses on orange petals. There is something to be said for vigor on own roots with this group. I loved the flowers of 'Duquesa de Penaranda', but the plant just would not get going for me (4 years of staying virtually the same tiny size), and was eventually killed by ants, of all things. 'Gruss an Coburg' is pretty vigorous -- bush in photo below, taken today, is 6' tall, own-root, and I cut it back regularly. Another great one is 'Etoile de Feu' (about 3' after 3 years) but it is quite susceptible to blackspot -- photos below from later in a previous season, as it is currently "indisposed" due to rampant blackspot (though blooming, as always, like a champ). I have a found rose, apparently a Pernetiana, "Lundy's Lane Yellow", that is very vigorous on its own roots (goes to 7' in a season) and hardly susceptible to blackspot at all, it seems. Sadly out of commerce and not quite in bloom yet -- I am planning to do a "study" of it on HMF when it is ready -- a very worthy rose. P.S. Pernetiana fever is a good thing -- they deserve some attention! 'Gruss an Coburg', today: 'Etoile de Feu', June 2014: Now deceased, 'Duquesa de Penaranda' 2013 (the flowers were large, 5.5"-- ridiculous on such a small bush)

Excellent work! Did you make these for gifts, to sell, or just because? I've been soaping since November and still have trouble with the two color thing. You've inspired me to try again.

Thanks Magi! The "horsey" soaps are going to a consignment shop that sells only equestrian wear and other odds and ends that are horse related. We just purchased my daughter's 1st saddleseat suit from this lady and while we were there I noticed some very poorly made soaps there, (I'm sorry to who ever did them but they were awful :() I guess it was some lady from the west coast. Anyway, in our conversation she said she'd love me to bring some in sooooooooo... this will be my first try at public selling! The rest were made just because for now but I do want to start making Mother's Day baskets. One of my other daughters (there are 4 in all) came down today and wiped me out! LOL I love it though, makes me happy that I can still make things for them that they love. I'm so glad I inspired you! Thanks!

You go girl! I guess I need to get braver in my conversations with retailers around here. I live just outside New Orleans which is a huge tourist city. I'll bet if I did some Mardi Gras soaps they would be a huge hit with the local retailers. Hmmmm, food for thought. Now, where do I find Mardi Gras molds? LOL!

Here's a thought for mardi gras molds: On e-bay there are several candy molds of womens torsos. They'd be thin soaps, but we're really going for theme anyway. You could buy colored strandes of pearles from a craft store, cut to length, and drape over neck of torso for a beaded necklace look.

Just an idea.

Magi--you could embed strands of Mardi Gras beads into the soap--that would be cool. I did do a quick search on google for Mardi Gras molds (my folks live outside of Gulf Shores, AL) 'cuz I thought it'd be neat to send them some - but I couldn't find anything.

Thanks for the ideas! The parades start this weekend so I'm going to try the bead idea. I don't have any left over from last year. It's probably too late to get them out there before Mardi Gras this year (its March 4th, but the festivities start this weekend), but there's always next year. I have seen some Fleur De Lis molds which is the crest of our local NFL team (the Saints) so that might do well IF they would ever have a winning season again. LOL!

Oh, I did do a petal basket for someone who is having lots of guests in for the festivities. I'm going to try to upload it here - hope it works:
