sewing studio finally set up

It's taken me two months but i am finally up and working again. All I have to do is finish painting the walls pale pink and I am done. Removing almost all the cabinet doors prevents me from slamming my head into edges continually. Since the sewing room was in the main house before I wanted most of the clutter behind doors. But now I dont have to hide it all. The most brilliant idea was painting a grungy linoleum floor sage green. It will hold me several years until we can afford a bamboo floor. Even recovered my chair to match the room. What do you think?

Very nice,love all your white cabinets.I learned something new today,what a Tallitot is.LOL I read it and thought what the heck is that,so i put it in the search engine.They say you learn something new everyday and i find it so true.

So tell me,what steps are involved in painting a floor,how long does it take and is it hard to do??? I need to do something to the floor in my sewing,excuse me,my studio.I don't want carpet,not even industrial because i also tole paint in there.Hadn't thought of paint,but it sound interesting.So please tell!!

Painting a floor was easier than I thought. First you clean it well and let it get bone dry. They then suggest sanding it but I skipped that option. Next I added one coat of white primer that prevents bleed through of any existing stains ( of which there were many) I let that dry over night. Then I rolled on two coats of floor paint. Each coat sep by a day. I also painted the disgusting shoe molding sage green... it was a discolored mustard color. I used a matte finish but a semi gloss would work too. It has a beach cottage feeling now and I really enjoy letting silk drape along the easy-to-sweep up spiffy floor.

Update on this post: The seedling flat I recommended proved to be to shallow in depth (I had a feeling this might happen, however I could not find a deeper flat - all the ones made are pretty much the uniform size). The seed tray I described above should really only be used for starting seeds if you're going to be using the accompanying humidity dome. If it's not that dry out where you live, i.e. not Chicago in the winter time, or any other very arid climate, then the humidity dome is unnecessary and the seedling flat is unnecessary, too. The main reason I used the seedling flat was that the dome was made to fit directly on top of it. Looking back I could've just used the dome and sewed the seeds in deeper containers and placed them under it. Problems that I encountered with the seedling flat were that after about two or two 1/2 months of growth growth slowed down significantly, as a result of the roots not having any more space to grow down, probably also because the deeper the roots grew, the closer they got to the heat mat and the hotter they got. If the flat had been deeper, I could've kept the heat mat on without worrying about it potentially harming the seedling roots. The seedling flat is just not deep enough. It's only about two or three inches deep. All I did to remedy this was move the seedlings. I mixed a bag of mycorrhizal root dip gel in a kitchen bowl, then removed the entire clump of soil that the seedlings were growing in by pushing up from the bottom of the seedling flat, placed the soil clump in the root dip gel, then gently separated the inter-twining roots and potted up each seedling separately. Next year I'm simply going to start the seeds in a deeper medium, maybe some sort of self-made flat but with a deeper bottom. Everything else worked great, the only bad decision on was using such a shallow seedling tray. Ah well, learning requires experience, after all.

Hi Ladylotus. No, the windows are on the east and north. There will be florescent shop lights hanging from the ceiling above the top shelf, and under each shelf except the bottom. I'll have to see how much they effect the electricity bill, but when I've raised seedlings before (except for winter seeding, of course) I've kept the lights on them 24x7. I also keep a fan blowing in the room to help prevent damping off. The seedlings are a lot of fun, even though they are a fair amount of work when grown indoors, because of all the watering they take once they are growing. You can't let them sit in water, but still they dry out pretty fast so watering is a 'check at least twice a day' and water almost every day sort of thing. Watching them grow is pretty gratifying though, and I love the earthy smell of the seed starting mix and growing plants. It's a good way to help get you through the winter :-)

I have always wanted something on like Rebecca but lately as Caroline said I've been in my sewing room for a while and realize I haven't turned the t.v. or music on. I like praise music and have a cd that my daughter and her friend made to give at a women's retreat that is one of my favorites. Of course, I'm only a little proud of her! Ha I also have a contempory christian music channel on cable that I listen to sometimes. Sometimes, I just let the t.v. play for noise. Guess it depends if I want to hear my thoughts or not. Ha Sally

Building A Sewing Studio....Ideas Needed!

Thanks for all of you who have taken the time to share your opinions with me. It means a great deal. My husband and I are the owner/builders for this home, as we have no desire to deal with a builder. (We have the skills to do this). This also enables me to build exactly as I want, and to make changes as desired. I've carefully weighed the outbuilding idea, but I can't really seem to get very enthused about it. I don't want to build something like that when I haven't got a true hankering for it, and then have it sit as an expensive guest area that seldom gets used but has to be maintained anyway. I have always wanted a loft sewing room....for as long as I can remember. I am in my mid fifties now, and feel barring an accident or a huge unforseen health issue, I can't see where stairs are a problem. I feel some forced exercise is a good thing. We will be staying in this house hopefully for the rest of our lives, so maybe when I'm very old I won't be able to go up the stairs any more. By then I would probably not be able to see well enough to sew anyway. As for an unforseen surgery, (which has happened to me before), a sewing machine can always be set up in the living room. The master bedroom is planned for the main level, and all doorways will be 36" wide, so I am planning for some of the "what ifs".... I want to finally be able to set up my sewing furniture, and not have to move things or put anything away because the space is needed for something else, or for a guest. Over the weekend we looked at a model log home with a loft looking out over the living room, and the vaults were not huge where the couch, etc. was. It depends on how the house is designed, which I was thrilled to see. The other option is to try and fit a small main floor sewing room in which I can bump into the living room with my cutting table when needed. It would work, but I'm not enthusiastic about that either. That's what I had to do for years. Not an easy decision, is it? However, an architect commented to me that if I would love a loft, then even getting just 20 years pleasure out of one is more than worth it. Sandy

Your studio is wonderful, when everything is in a place to just reach or grab, that helps so much, I can't help it but I want to say "Be fruitful and multiply" quilting, we need to see projects. LOL Rene

I am so envious!! Congratulations, it must be wonderful to have everything organized and right where you know it is. Love it!! It sounds like you are very talented in sewing and renovating. Just curious...do you make your own fabric...I got that impression from reading your post. Enjoy your new digs!!

hi leona, i don't weave but i paint and embellish fabric and turn them into garments or home linens. thanks for the nice note.

i am currently reupholstering dining room chair with a tone on tone moss green fabric i added swirls to. then i will paint the room deep berry red.

I'm very impressed. I would love to have a craft/sewing studio separate from the rest of the house! Your studio is just perfect.

I'd like to hear about & see where everyone else sews.

I turned our never used dining room (only 10 x 14)into my studio. I used white cabinets too, but could use more and another closet, I have all my calico fabrics on shelves in the entryway closet which is about 10 steps from my studio, right next to a 1/2 bath/powder room.
I have my machines set up in front of a double window with a beautiful front yard view. I have porceline tile floors which are easy to keep clean and find dropped pins.
There is a door on a "cubby" space about 3 1/2' square and 2 to 4' high under the bottom 6 steps going upstairs that I will use for bulky stuff. It's sheetrocked in there & ready to paint, then I bought wood tiles for the floor.

Your pictures really made me want more cabinets NOW!

bev: i would love to see a photo of your sewing space. It's sounds serene and lovely. Mine is pretty busy. All those cabs had doors when the sewing room was part of the house. In fact I even for a while shared sewing space with a guest room. I have come a long way since then.

Movingwest....I know what you mean. Originally when we built this house the little space 7' x 4' under the stairs was my sewing nook.
I 've got a new digital camera that I don't know how to use yet. If I ever get time to figure it out and how to post pix I will post it.
