Craftsman Garage Door Opener Quit

I have a 53985 1/2 hp Craftsman GDO purchased in December of 2003. About a year ago, it started acting up...opening on it's own, sometimes not working, etc. It would always resume working...

Recently when it stopped working, it would not operate at all unless I disconnected the red and white wires at the unit, then plugged them back in. It would then work fine for about a week.

Now, the unit is completely dead except for the indicator light (gold) on one of the sensors is on, the green one is not. There is no light on the wall control.

I've tried running a test wire from the unit to the wall control...it didn't help.

Any ideas?

It sounds like your wall control may be bad. Try removing the red and white wires again and shorting across those two terminals with a screw driver. You won't get shocked. Also try aligning the door sensors to see if you can get that other light to come on. If this doesn't work you may have a bad logic board.

Thanks for the advice!
This morning when I checked the garage, everything was working perfectly! Last night, it was dead, now it's working fine. The unit has operated perfectly all day.
Any ideas about this intermittent failure?

Cut your losses and chunk the Craftsman garage door opener. Get a Genie and you will never post a question about openers on this forum again. A little research on this forum will show you hundreds of posts about those badly engineered and cheaply produced monsters. There are probably more questions about them than anything else on this forum. I recommend the Genie "Excelerator". Opens twice as fast, quiet, has two lights, and extremely reliable. My wife's remote for the garage door that she uses had gotten quite unreliable. Testing the battery showed that it was like new for voltage output. So the battery and contacts were buffed with a rough cloth ( don't use sandpaper or anything that will damage the plating) and now it works perfectly.

Sounds like your receiver has quit. Hard wired wall control and keypad doesn't use it so it keeps working. Time for a new opener. That one is old and outdated anyway.

Steve, the hardest thing to figure is an intermittent. I really couldn't even guess.

Here's a strange one. Our keyless entry pad has stopped working, but only when the garage is fully closed. It works fine to close the garage door. And it works fine to open the door if the garage is open even as little as an inch or two. But once the garage door is fully closed, the keyless pad does not work.

All of the other remotes work fine in all cases; but the keyless pad does not open the door (when fully closed). I tried replacing the battery, but this made no difference.

Any ideas?

This is a strange one alright. Have you added anything inside the garage? Even something that shouldn't affect this. Especially if it plugs in. I would try the keypad in a different location maybe even a little lower or higher.
