help with fabric for ottoman

I am going to make a coffee table ottoman for my living room to replace the small coffee table. Thanks the Mrsmerv and her helpful instructions I going to attempt it. I thought I found the fabric but did not like what I found with the rest of my room. I have a new rug which I love and now I need help with the fabric for the ottoman. Here is a pic of the living room. The rug looks a little orange but it is really not it is more burgundy than orange.

From the entry way:

The rug has burgundy red, gold, brown , turquiose blue, green, tan and terra cotta color.

Should my ottoman stand out or blend in?

I really like your room because it looks very comfortable and relaxing. You have quite a few patterns in there so I would say "blend".

Is the paint color more along the color in the first pic or the second? In the second one it looks like a warm golden color. You have lovely warm wood tones and earthy colors and I would choose a complementary color from either the rug or tapestry. I would suggest pulling a color from the chair but I can't really tell what the colors are, at least not on my computer.

Wall color is closer to the color in the second pic. Thanks Mrsmarv for you offer to help.

Katy, since you haven't already made your ottoman slipcover(s), I thought I'd throw a few ideas/suggestions your way. You might want to consider upholstery fabric for the slipcover. It usually comes in much wider width... 54" is standard, also found in 52" and 48/50". Upholstery fabric is much sturdier than dressmaking and most drapery fabric. It will stand up to rougher treatment that an ottoman may receive. And you will probably have less waste in cutting it out, depending on the pattern and drop (if any). You might want to reconsider NOT having any pleats... a simple box pleat at the corners would add a lot to the impact. Be sure to check at your library for books on how to make slipcovers. You will find lots of ideas and help. If they have, for instance, So Simple Slipcovers by Gail Abbott and Cate Burren, you will find the instructions for the "Bedroom Stool Cover" on pages 140+ very helpful. It will tell you how to make a paper pattern to use to determine the yardage of fabric needed, etc.

Also keep in mind that if you were to change to a bigger ottoman than the current, some of these fabrics might not wear well.

imhofan, you inspired us to go look at new rugs. Fell in love with an oriental one that then changed the whole scheme. (See my new post "Tell me this fabric looks okay with wall and carpet.") And what we discovered when we laid the rug down is #1 it brightened up the entire room and #2 our slightly scratched glass coffee table no longer showed the scratches. So we're going to wait on that ottoman for now and save $500.

I too would say blend. Very comfy looking room. Do you have a TV in here that's out of view? Just curious whether is a sitting room of TV room. Whatever it is I can see loads of places to snuggle up with a good book or to take a nap.

Justgotabme the tv is to the right of fireplace tucked away in a bookcase so we can watch tv if we want or close the bookcase doors if we don't want to see it.
