Fabric Book to Applique T-Shirt

For those of you doing back to school wal-mart has a fabric book that's BTS that's $4/YD. I put wonder under on the back, cut out the page, ironed to the T-Shirt and applique stitched around the whole page. This covered up the page # too. They also had a book with police and fireman that tells more of a story, but I still think it would work for little boys shirts or diaper bags.

Susan, the tee came out really cute, those little books come in handy, I used one for a quilt, and made a jacket for a grandson years ago. I think you are having a blast making kids clothes, maybe you need to design a line, find a boutique to take them, see what happens rene

That's cute,but the kids here wear unifoms,Thank goodness,and the shirts have to be PLAIN white.Cute though for after school or non school days.

Jean, Are the windows square or are they crooked with points? Like on Strolling the Block? Once we figure that out we can decide the best way to do this.... I just bought a book that is AWESOME for applique! It is called Baltimore Elegance, and it has patterns to do a Baltimore album quilt. But it has 6 lessons that teach you applique including reverse, back basting and all sorts of stuff I don't know how to do. The beginning has the best explanations of needleturn and prepared applique I have ever seen!

She really stressed that good enough isn't really good enough. That paying attention to the size of your stitches - as tiny as you can make them and as evenly as you can space them - is worth the effort. She showed me several areas where you couldn't see my stitches at all on the front of the piece and then places where you could see stitches. It makes a difference in how smooth the piece looks and, again, she stressed that it's worth the effort to make that happen. I'm not sure I can achieve her level because my eyes aren't that great anymore. Some of what she saw quickly I had to squint to see, but she was right and I'm going to give it a try. I'll see how consistent I can be on the next one. But I think that between sewing, watching tv, talking to DH, petting cats on my lap and sipping on my hot tea, I may always have a few stitches that are visible. LOL I can do much better than I did and each month I should improve more; some of the family distractions are things I like though and so I'll have to work around them.

I saw something of a craft tv show, never tried it myself though. They sewed different colors of knit to the wrong side (3 or so?)and then cut through the the top layers leaving only one uncut, a X cut, maybe 2-3" across. When washed it curled up. The X's were either "randomly" placed some in a pattern. **Another t-shirt idea:I helped with a activity at school. The kids all brought different colored T-shirts then collected leaves and laid them on the shirt and sprayed w/mister bottle a solution of bleach around the leaves(not sure what concentration) and let sit 10 min. or so then rinsed. It left really nice leaf patterns. You can do front and back but you must line in with cardboard wrapped in plastic bag so the front/back doesn't soak through. The best ones were made of 100% cotton. Sorry, can't remember if t-shirts were wet before bleach was sprayed on, I think they were.

I am in the process of making one for my son. I have collected several years worth of t-shirts. What I am doing since blue is his favorite color, is taking the white hankies (large) dying them blue, and attaching a t-shirt square to each one of these that way each square will be the same size, then I am taking fabric paints and marking the event and year in a corner. Then I am taking each one of these squares and having a jean border to accent the squares, batting and then on the back is jean squares, just sewn together to the full size of the front. I imagine it will turn into a queen size or larger and then to give it to him at graduation so he can look back at his past events.

Some of the schools here where uniforms in a different county, but I can't see the mayor of our town (who runs everything!!) allowing the school to change unless the community really wanted it. Our Highschool football field, etc is nicer that the 4 yr college 20 miles up the road.

Rene, I'd love to quit work and sew or cook, but with a sick husband it's a necessity that I keep my health insurance and work til I'm old enough to draw my state pension. I've got 3 years left to be vested and 18 years left til I can draw at my full benefit. If I left after becoming vested I'd have to wait 6-10 more years (28 years from now) until I could draw what I've paid in. See, I have really thought about that type thing! LOL.
