Lisa, here are some specs I collected when I was narrowing down my choice. These are all 5 ft tubs. Archer-- drop in only bottom at narrowest point= 19 11/16 at widest = same basin length = 45 depth, to base of drain= 15 finished floor to top of tub= 19 width- outside = 32 Madison, 34" drop in or undermount 60 gal bottom at narrowest point= 19 at widest = same basin length = 40 depth, to base of drain= 15 3/4 finished floor to top of tub= 22 width- outside = 34 Madison, 32" drop in or undermount 60 gal bottom at narrowest point= 18 at widest = same basin length = 40 depth, to base of drain= 15 3/4 finished floor to top of tub= 22 width- outside = 32 Madison, 30" drop in or undermount 55 gal bottom at narrowest point=16 at widest = same basin length = 40 depth, to base of drain= 15 3/4 finished floor to top of tub= 22 width- outside = 30 (compared to my current tub) bottom at narrowest point= 17, (above the curve is almost 19) at widest = 22 basin length = 50 depth, to base of drain= 16 finished floor to top of tub= 24 width- outside = 35, almost 36

What a great plan. And I echo the others about leaving the lower cabinets as a peninsula seperating the space between kitchen and dining room. We added a peninsula between our kitchen and eating area and I was afraid that I would feel cramped and I don't at all. Leave the fridge/pantry where they are and you will have a peninsula of about 6' which is a very usable size. It looks like you already have a 14' entry into the dining roomand then opening up the upper part of the wall will continue the spaciousness. I think any bigger entry will be too big. The peninsula can be used for buffet serving, putting dirty dishes when clearing the dining room, maybe used as a bar area when entertaining - it will be very useful. I have two questions/concerns - your top plan shows 2 double sinks while the others show a single in the island and then a double on the perimeter. Hopefully that's the way the it will be planned - one double and one single. My other question is the use of a trash compactor - do you have one now or is it an addition. I don't have one so can't speak to its usefulness but not alot of people have them. I think what will be more useful, which I don't see, is a trash/recycling pull-out station. Just thoughts for you

Can you measure the current distance between the edge of the ledge and the stairway? Perhaps Valinsv doesn't have it quite right. Also, I think you need to realize that the concern is not if stools will fit, it is whether they will fit while allowing for adequate room to walk behind them. Why? Because if that aisle is blocked, people will automatically walk through the kitchen proper - past sink and range - through what is already a 1 cook kitchen space. I had this in my former kitchen, and visitors tended to congregate in the most awkward locations, such as right in front of the sink and the range (and that corner between them). This is what tends to happen when builders put in an island because "that is what people want." In a large space, islands are popular because there is plenty of room to move around them and they prevent a sensation of being "trapped" in the kitchen. However, in a smaller space it becomes more important to protect the cooking zone which is not large enough to accommodate multiple people. We switched to a peninsula design. We can now accommodate multiple cooks, and visitors enjoy hanging out on the periphery of the space because there is plenty of room to do so. We understand your desire for a certain look and feel. It is not unusual to place form over function. However, the people here will try to steer you to the most functional space possible within a desired form. I personally think your best options are to reconsider the peninsula or ditch the stools and overhang at the island. If there is no sink or cooktop on the island, people will very likely still congregate around it, just standing. Which is why I still lean toward the peninsula.
