Built-In Pantry- Can You Give Me Some Inspiration Pics

I changed my original plan and I decided to go for a built-in pantry. The more I think about it, the more I am not sure what it should look like. Should I try to make it like a hutch so it doesn't look like a big block of cabinets? The pantry will be the first cabinet inside a doorway.

I am also thinking that I may be able to re-purpose an old oven stack cabinet??? After reading florantha's great thread about modest and quirky kitchens I am trying to remind myself to stick to my budget.

Can you guys give me some inspiration pics?

This is my latest layout idea. The pantry is to the right of the fridge. I have an additional under-the-stair pantry adjacent to the dining area and additional storage in the laundry room.

I think your coffee area could handle some hutchlike detailing if you'd like, and I was going to say to stay fairly plain on the pantry, but then I thought of Erikanh's great pantry...and there's another with glass doors on the front that is wonderful. (I wish I could remember the name of the person whose kitchen it was...I think it had a red, divided light door) I was first wondering why someone would want others to see into a pantry, but it was a homey and had a lot of character.

I'll link photos of Erikanh's kitchen below. The first pic is what I meant about your coffee area, and the 2nd photo on this page is the pantry I referenced.

I know you must hear this all the time rhome but I will say it anyway - you are good! Those are perfect inspiration pics. Erikanh's kitchen is perfection and the coffee area is gorgeous. I would never thought of glass either in the pantry but I love hers. I don't know if my pantry could ever look that organized but maybe it would keep my in line.

I think I am looking for something so I will lessen then idea of feeling hemmed in when I walk through that doorway. My plans could definitely use some character. Character is something I so love in other kitchen but not something I know how to give to mine.

Going back to look at the pics some more.

Hi catkin & svs128, The tiles are Isole from Oregon Tile & Marble. Since we were going to do two of the walls all the way up, we wanted the variance of hand-molded tile. We're very pleased with the ones we got, but I think any hand-molded tile would give the same effect. There are also some faux hand-molded tiles out there these days that have similar variance and are much cheaper. We almost used one for our kitchen from a local tile store (Seattle Tile), so ask around at yours. We used epoxy grout (spectra lock?). Not sure about the exact grout color, but maybe almond? The ceiling vent cover is really a heat register cover. It came from Signature Hardware, but any register cover will work. I saw that trick in a magazine somewhere and from then on decided I couldn't do the plastic covers that come with the fans. Note that my contractor did put some beefier support up there to hold it in place (as it's a little bit heavier than the plastic ones). The floor tile came from Dal Tile (www.daltile.com). We got the outside square tiles in a preset pattern, so they were very easy for our tile guy to install. They will do any pattern you can imagine, and then repeat it and give it to you in sheets. The hexes in the middle came in full white sheets, so our tile guy pulled out some white ones by hand and put in the black ones for the flowers. The sinks came from Rejuvenation (rejuvenation.com). Unfortunately, they didn't have their sinks shown on their website when we bought ours, but they have them for sale in their Seattle store. I'm not even sure what box they came in or who the real manufacturer is, but the folks that work there are very helpful there, and I'm sure they would tell you over the phone. Glad you like it- we had a lot of fun doing it, and think we came out with something that's functional in a modern way, but has the appearance of a traditional room. I can understand your discomfort with the too-open kitchen but I think you may be panicking and thinking you need to do too much. I note that your kitchen has a one-story ceiling while the dining area and living area have taller ceilings. I would simply cut off the countertop that faces toward the living area and extend the pony wall beneath it upward to the ceiling. You would no longer need the decorative post. I would NOT try to extend that wall beyond the point where the dining room's 2 story ceiling starts because, if you do, you'll have to try and make the ceilings look right. Instead, I would just have the remaining countertop curved off and brought in to meet the newly raised-up wall. (Not sure I'm explaining this well so I'll attach a sketch. BTW, I see a couple of wall lights and a door (closet?) on the wall beside your entry that don't show up on your plan so I've added those.) I do like your idea of making opening into the kitchen that is beside the staircase into an arched doorway. And I know this will sound weird since you're trying to close up the kitchen some... but I would put a small arched opening (pass-thru) into the middle of newly raised up wall. A small pass-thru opening would allow a person working at the prep sink to see the front door. But a person entering the front door would NOT really be able to see into the kitchen thru the arched pass thru. All the countertops would still be hidden. They would just get a view of the window that is over the kitchen sink. Also, two arches complement each other and look planned while a single arched opening may just look like it was an after-thought. I would then strategically place a tall green plant near the bottom of the stairs so it partially obscures the straight-on view into the kitchen from the front door and gives visitor's eyes a stopping point. Maybe a ficus or dracena or philodendron. It'll be a rather low light location tho so you might want to invest in a very good artificial plant rather than trying to keep a real plant alive. I do think that these relatively simple changes would get rid of the overly "exposed" feeling you have now and would cost a WHOLE lot less than adding a bunch of walls and moving a fireplace, etc. Here's the sketch:

nanny2a - I had not thought about doing something on a trellis. That's a great idea. I even have some forged iron trellis that an artist welder friend made for the yard in our previous house. And I love ivies...? Ivys? Ivii? Ivies looks wrong. :) I had thought about filling in the bottom with impatiens and maybe hostas. My mother is constantly thinning her hostas and trying to find homes for them. grlwprls - thanks! I had never heard of climbing hydrangea but looked it up - looks pretty! I will have to see if I can find it around here... I don't think I've seen it before. Surely it can be ordered though... I love mandevillas but as you said, wrong for the zone. They look great June - Sep though. :/ fnmroberts - Just to be clear -- I'm talking about the porch only, specifically to the left of the front door. The picture is a clone of our house during construction, not our house in its present state. Our yard is landscaped. lukkiirish - ohhh... that's what they're called. I always called those "mini christmas trees" because I see them for sale around then with a few glass balls tied on. :) I had thought about something like that. Our home definitely has a rustic feel so it would be great to stay with that idea. fori - thanks! I tend to equate landscape with hardscape, which I know is not really the case. I will check it out!

Pinch me - I know what you mean. My husband and I went to a kitchen designer /builder and they looked at us like we had two heads when we started running by our ideas. So we just decided to do it all ourselves.

someone used old screen doors for her pantry doors. that was the old fashioned farm kitchen redo.

We're doing a 41" wide pantry cabinet (custom cabs) with drawers on the bottom (2 drawers on the first row, then two 41" wide drawers below that) and a regular pantry cab on top with rollout shelves. It's still a lot of wood, but I think the drawers break it up some. The 41" wide drawers and rollout shelves are going to be HUGE!

We have a similar fridge wall, just the mirror image.

Note that the pic below is not final: I had the cabinet maker move 1 inch from the right cabs to the pantry, so the pantry will be 41.5".

I have a small room that is a pantry - but the back wall I wanted to look hutch like. It has glass fronts and drawers which sit directly on the counter. I am not sure it is what you are looking for but may provide inspiration.

desertsteph - I think I remember that. I guess the thread is long gone. That is a pretty cool idea.

pudgybaby - that is going to be beautiful! It looks more like a piece of furniture which is what I am aiming for. What are you going to put in the drawers?

willowdecor - your pantry is AMAZING. I love the glass and the cabinets sitting on the countertop. The first time I saw it I thought someone was posting inspiration pics. It took me a minute to figure out that it actually belonged to a real person. LOL! It must be so nice to have your desk area in there as well. Thanks also for the beautiful inspiration pics.

I have a 5' wall that runs perpendicular to the planned refrigerator wall. I am using the whole space for my desk but I don't need it all for my laptop. I was trying to figure out how to tie it into the coffee/snack bar cabinets but I couldn't do it. I kind of gave up on that one.

Great pics Marcolo. I remember the red one. I would have to get more organized with those but maybe that is a good thing. The fabric one is a neat idea.

I started thinking about all the stuff on the top shelf of my pantry that is not pretty enough to have on display. The more I thought about that stuff I realized that it has been sitting up there for probably 5 years untouched! Guess it needs to head on out the door to Goodwill.

I just talked to DH about the pantry and he loves the ideas you guys have given me. Hope he likes them enough to increase the budget to cover it.
