Annoying Ads

I will not be visiting this site as much as I used to. I find that every time I open up the page or click on any thread that annoying banner pops up and REALLY slows down my page loading. It forces itself on the reader by popping up all the way down to halfpage, and you unable to read any of the posts until you can close it. It really annoys me! Everyone's input on this site is so valuable, too bad the ads weigh in more. I already know about how sites need the revenue to keep up the site, but there has to be a way where the advertisers don't overimpose themselves. Pls excuse my venting. I have for several years enjoyed this wonderful forum, as well as others on GW. If possible I may just continue to pop in from time to time, hopefully those ads won't be so intrusive any more. I know if you contribute to this web site you don't have the ads when log on.

I hate the one that sizzles like meat cooking...it always makes me jump! At least I think I've seen that one on this site.

The ads come from doubleclick.net. If you aren't blocking them, you're crazy. Google "block doubleclick" if you don't know how to do it. I've blocked doubleclick.net 33,710 times! They are the worst and now they are part of google so I'm going to have to reconsider using google. There are plenty of other ad servers that you'll want to block, but start with doubleclick.

I cannot resist saying the phrase "building negative brand equity" is one of the most meaningless, corporate doubletalk, quasi-special-ed type phrases I've heard to date. It enforces my opinion that no real scholarship is done in 'business schools'. And whatever purported scholar authored said study is more likely to toss his own feces than to say something meaningful. How does one build negative equity? That doesn't even make sense. But I digress...... If you mean it makes you not want to buy the crap I agree. I will never buy honey oat cheerios. They can shove them into their greedy capitalist orifices. But saying things like "building negative equity", that's coined by people who want to sound like they know something....but who were actually strangled by their mother's placenta. As for the ads, I think my firewall / virus software disables them......

I'm sorry to see this. I've only been back a little while after giving up because of the ad-related technical problems, different computer set-up now and no problems thus far. I've missed being here.

You might try switching to the Firefox browser. I hardly get any popups anywhere, and, although I contribute to this site, I don't to any others and only rarely get popups.

When it's time to renew, you'll get an e-mail. I just pay online as it's easier.

I thought perhaps as in the old days when a customer expressed dissatisfaction with something, the business did all it could to improve its service. Instead, I guess people now accept lower standards of service and or performance as the norm rather than the exception and therefore do not voice their concerns or objections.

well I get almost a full screen comercial. This just started yesterday and I hate it.

I'm a member, and I don't get any ads at all! I have to check with my IT guy, since I use the computer at work, but have only the most rudimentary (and free!) blocker software -- if any at all.

Is it a matter of being a member? If so, then I think it was a pretty good use of $15.

Today I had a reply to my email about the system squeezing our threads to the far left to make room for the much too large ad. Tech support said it was an error and they were working on it. This morning the screen is back to normal for me - how about you?

If you truly value this web site, as I do, you may want to think about becoming a paid member/subscriber. Yes, there are other sewing/quilting/cooking/gardening/etc. forums out there, but the Garden Web/ThatHomeSite has been around for quite a few years and the ease of use in navigating means a lot to many of us.

To subscribe, on the Sewing Forum home page, you will find Member Services on the top left of the page. Click there and you will be taken to a page with many choices for you as a paid or non-paid member. Halfway down the list of options, you will see "Contributions & Subscribing Memberships." This should lead you to information on becoming a paid member.

I don't know why it's taken me so long - I've just paid my $15 (Â£8.37!) subscription. I use this forum such a lot and really appreciate all the advice and kind words I've had from you guys. So I'll chalk this one up as Better Late than Never!

A large loud ad is now taking up the whole screen. Very annoying. It pops up everytime I change threads
