The kind that neglect to go "boing" when you hit them hard can tear out, leaving an ugly hole in the baseboard.

Come to think of it, I do not recall seeing a doorstop in the design collection of The Museum of Modern Art, or in its store.

The spring wall design is the least intrusive, least expensive, and longest lasting I have found. I use that type when replacing doors in rental houses/apartments with very few callbacks.

The hinge design is a terrible choice for hollow core doors or solid core doors that have heavy use as they poke holes in the hollow doors and bend hinges on heavier doors as well as splitting door trim pieces.

I agree with handymac on the type that mounts on top the hinge. Usually the hinge pin runs through it. This type of stop has a smaller hole in it so it can only be used on interior bedroom or closet doors. These will put so much force on the hinge when binding that it will bend the hinge like Handy said. It will also force the hinge screws to pop out and cause the door to sag or rub. The Pigtail (I call them) are probably the most economical and commonly used on the market today. You can screw it to the wall or the door itself. I find attaching it to the door bottom causes less future damage to the door and less boing noise. The only other stop I use frequently is a wall stop. Personally I prefer these over any of the others. The reason being the wall mounted stop hits the door on the knob which is closer to the middle of the door. So your not getting a large amount of strain or bind from the top or bottom only. There are tons of styles to choose from. The only important thing to remember is your locking hardware on the door. If the door your putting this on has a push button lock on it. You must get the wall stop that has the recess to accommodate the button. If not the door will lock itself each time the handles hits the stop. The only other problem is people don't like things on their walls sometimes. As for manufacturer's Stanley & Ives have been around for ever. They are probably two of the biggest and most honorable companies out there today. Window Guy - I agree with you about the wall-mounted stop, but I am replacing existing door stops in my home which are all currently mounted in the baseboards. So I would have to fill in all those holes, paint the baseboards, etc. in order to change over to the wall style you recommend. So for my next house, wall-mounted stops it is, but for right now, I need to use the kind that screw into the baseboards.

Sounds like you guys are recommending the "boing" style, although I hadn't considered that the noise might be annoying. I noticed on Stanley's website (link above) that the spring doorstops come in white, so I think those'll be less noticeable. Certainly an improvement over the my current corroded ones.

I am really glad this thread came up, because I want to know what to do when a hingepin style doorstop is the only solution. I understand what you are saying about how the hingepin doorstops will bend the hinge, etc. But I have a closet door in the corner of my bedroom where the door, when open, hits the window which is right behind it. So a wall-mounted doorstop isn't possible. Also, there are curtains on that window which go to the floor, so the baseboard is hidden by the curtains, making a baseboard-mounted doorstop impossible. The only solution is a hingepin style. The closet door is heavier than normal cause it has a full-length mirror mounted on its inside. Assuming I need to use a hingepin style, should I look for a certain kind, or weight or brrand? Thanks.

The spring stops are also easier on your bare toes, should you walk into one. I've had hinge stops on several doors for *years* without damaging anything. Maybe we are extremely careful people? (No conversations with flying plates...or slamming doors.)

When we built our new addition, I first tried the non-boing type.....which promtly broke off, the first time I hit them with something like the sweeper. We also have the hingepins, but they can gouge the doors, if you have kids who are hard on them.
Have a question......the kind that hits the door knob....don't you have to have a stud in exactly the right place for that one?
I guess I continue to like the boing type at the bottom.

Shannon, If your only choice is the hinge pin stop. Use two of them. One on the top hinge and another on the bottom. This will at least put even pressure on the door. Make sure to adjust them to hit the door simultaneously. Then just remember not to abuse the door or let the kids hang on it.

Shannon - there is a new hingepin doorstop out there called the "Door Saver". This design hits the hinge instead of the door so the door doesn't suffer any damage. Below is a link to their website.

For most decorative hardware, I prefer Brainerd over Ives or Stanley. They seem to have more choices in finish - satin nickel, venetian bronze, etc. Around here their stuff is at Lowe's.

As I've replaced doorstops in my place, I've attached them (usually the "boing" type [love those technical terms!]) to the doors themselves. That way it's quite difficult to walk into it (I'm getting out of the way of the door anyway) and I don't hit it with the vacuum because I can move the door easily. Just my $.02.
