staying organized

as a organization maniac I have a sewing apron that holds all my tools when working so they follow me wherever I go in the room.

I also keep a little notions tray on the worktable. its a plastic box picture frame; it holds my magnetic pin cushion, markers, gauge, bodkin, snips etc ... whatever I am using I just toss it in there so it doesn't get lost. when i want more room I pick up the whole thing and move it.

The apron sounds like a gr8 idea! Pics?
I use a small plastic basket to hold my "stuff". I also have a 3 drawer roll around cart with fabric, threads ect.... that I can roll over to the table. Sure saves jumping up & down when I need something.

I have all the proper things but my sewing room is the Den, family room or whatever when family comes. You add 3-4 other people picking up, using & laying down your stuff & it becomes chaotic quick. Maybe if I require signing out & in as they come & go, they'd be in sight when everybody left. Amazingly the 6 year old can find stuff for us when somebody says "Where's the ????"

For record keeping I have just started using my Excel program. I have just up dated it to the point that I now use separate pages for those I have filled and those that need seeds and those I have requested seeds, etc. I found that for me the best addition I have started adding to the program is the Posted by: Hyperlink. These has allowed me to go directly back to that persons home page for more information, such as what they have to trade or their want list. I found they do not always state what the original request was. For me it is easier to check their site to have a better idea what their wants are and how to contact them later in case I run out of seeds but have fresh seeds later, etc. I post the date, name, hyperlink, email address, physical address, request and my response. Once the order has been filled I cut off that page and paste it onto my finished page. Cuts down on the confusion of having to check if I have filled their order, etc.

A butterfly exchange section would greatly enhance my enjoyment of this site! It would also give me something to tell my friends here about: "Hey, you guys wouldn't believe this awesome site! Not only can you get butterfly information from people worldwide, but you can trade all those extra seeds for things that you don't have! HELP! Tips for keeping organized and on top of your build

I am no where near as organized as most of you- although I have files/books labeled etc more or less all in one place. What has really worked for us in our build - we live here already. I work at night so I am here when they are working. I talk to the contracter every day. I am here for any issues. I have actually come in and made copies/printed from the computer to show the GC or subs exactly what I wanted etc. We have changed literally dozens of things on our build. I also have to give props to my builder. He really does build like it was his own home. He asks me to make decisions on things he could easily do without me ( and I trust him) just so we are informed. So my best advice to you would be to make sure to take the time to get to the site while your GC is there. Even if you have to take some time away from work, in the long run it will be worth it. Change orders cost money - any you can avoid are a great thing. Also be readily available via cell etc. Encourage your GC to call you anytime/anyplace. And one last word- be flexible. We all have a vision in our minds of our perfect home. Even though that is the goal for all concerned sometimes the "thing" we have pictured just isn't doable as we see it for whatever reason. That doesn't mean there isn't another ( sometimes even better) option. And even if in some areas you feel you have "settled" for something many times it still looks great and only you know what you desired it to look like so when people say "that is lovely" say "thank you" rather than explaining how it looks different than you originally thought it would. ( one of my personal faults!) LOL Enjoy the process and post pics when you can. PD

Organizing a bathroom so that it looks nice and stays functional

My vanity has no drawers, so I have a tall cabinet with open shelves to one side and a smaller, vanity height cabinet with a door on the other side. I keep everythign in dedicated baskets on the shelves. All OTC meds go in one, Toothbrushes, toothpaste-all oral hygiene items go in another. One to hold lotions, cremes, anything you apply to your body. One holds hair related things that I don't use all the time-straightener, extra boxes of color. A smaller basket holds hair ties, clips etc. I have a large vessel my DD1 made in HS that stores hair brushes, combs, blow dryer, etc. It sits on the counter. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc are in a basket. I keep my make up and personal grooming things in an over the toilet cabinet. I store tubed items, pencils, brushes-anything with a longer handle in pretty highball glasses. Nail utensils are in another. Small, pretty baskets hold make up, manicure items, cotton balls...I have small containers for groups of like items. I hate having to dig to get to what I want, so if I group them by like items, it's easier to find. I keep my medications in a basket that I have near my chair in the family room-I take them with my morning coffee-but if you have some you take at night, keep a pretty basket in the bathroom. In the other bathroom (DH uses that one) I have decorative jars to hold/hide his contact lens stuff, grooming items and in the cabinet I keep plastic containers that hold first aid things, extra hair products, his personal grooming things-deodorant, after shave, etc. I really hate to see things out in the open, so generally the only things on the counters in the bathrooms are the soap dispensers.

Here is the apron, it's patterned from my husband's tool belt, only padded with fusible fleece. the pocket for sharp things has a film cannister in the bottom so I don't stab myself.

My duct tape double "Venus" wears her when I am not working.

Oh! Hey I like that! Venus is the perfect model too.

I have some pink & white narrow striped denim that would make a gr8 apron. Fusible fleece I don't have.

Wow, great idea! Love the apron. Does Venus have a cover? If so, did you make it? I'd like to cover my Dritz dressmaker's form b/c it's at its widest adjustment and has big gaps, but don't quite know what to do.

keepem: I used navy blue tubular stretch jersey and just slipped it over her- gathering it at the neck. I can pin into the jersey and even into the duct tape filled with batting.

and dee the fusible fleece helps give the apron body and you dont have small items get lost. I went wild with the work apron thing and even have one for cleaning house... but that one I bought from the Clean Team.

I volunteer in a library part time and made a work apron for there too to hold scissors pencils cards tape etc.

I think one might be a great gift for a preschool or kindergarten teacher. hmmm. maybe I will make some for selling. How should I price them?

Like your apron, I have one for the garden, as far as my sewing room, I call it organized chaos rene
