Need ideas/pix-furniture arrange to make 2 rooms in 1 great room

Hi, I have never been creative with furniture arranging. Plus we always struggled to fit our things in odd living rooms.

Now we have remodeled and going to have one Great Room approx. 17' x 22'.

The 2 uses: TV at one end and sitting cozy by fireplace at the other. Anyone have ideas, or pictures, or some key words I might search on google?

Could you post a room layout with windows and doorways and rough measurements? It doesn't have to be a fancy cad rendering, just a sketch with doors,etc. would make furniture layout easier.

You know, now that I'm looking at this again, I would probably have to say I like the panels better than the valance -- however, I think two things initially threw me off. I agree that there's maybe too much panel. (And, as a hobby sewer I would personally NOT go to a fabric place to have my drapes made -- especially panels -- because they would charge way too much. If you did want custom panels, but you don't sew yourself, maybe go to your local fabric store, and see if they have business cards for local people that could sew for you, if you buy the fabric. Or see if there's anyone you know that could do it.) Also, could you have a more substantial rod. Seems to me something a little thicker might look a little better. And, one last thing, if you don't mind me babbling on (^_^), while I like the mirror you have over the mantle, I would personally replace it. I think on some decorating show I saw that they suggest against it, because when you're sitting (and really, standing, depending on the height of the mirror and wall), all you see reflected in the mirror is ... the ceiling. I would suggest either moving it (along with either other pictures/sconces/mirrors) to the blank wall, or get a larger mirror to put on that wall -- as a plus, it would reflect the light from the window opposite it. (It's hard to tell dimenions, but even a narrow console table against that wall might look good.) Oh, and random, but I agree with getting a more substantial side table to put in between the couch and chair, instead of the small pedestal table. Anywho, just some thoughts! ^_^ (And I hope you show piccies of your kitchen when you start on that.)

Thanks groveraxle for the room layouts. If you look at 1 and 2, you will see a nice walkway from front to kitchen without having to walk through the conversation area. I like that. What I don't like is the inability to watch tv sitting perpendicular to the tv and fireplace. This is a tricky room since the wall is offset from the fireplace/tv. Have you thought of having 4 swivel chairs around a round center coffee table centered on the fire place? It is a cozy sitting arrangement and chairs can be pivoted toward the tv when watching tv. This really won't work for the two closes to the fireplace/tv because of the awkward up angle but it will work for the other two. The other option .. have you thought of two low backed curved couches? One on each side of the fireplace? It would create a cozy seating area and still put seating facing the TV. I couldn't find a curved couch quickly but here is the idea but using a sectional. Obviously this wouldn't work because the size is too big and the lounge pieces but the idea is there if you can see it. The walkway remains free. You get a cozy seating area for both TV and fireplace and you don't have to find complementary pieces if you feel better having matching pieces.

Definitely no to two conversation areas, but yes to opening it up and taking advantage of the entire space. I'm not sure how far you are on your selections, but Ethan Allen offers Complementary Design services with your purchase, and I can honestly say working one on one with someone to create a tailored, cohesive space for you down to the exact measurements and circulation of a space plan is very valuable for pieces you want to own and fit for a long time. I like the idea of sofa + 2 chairs or Sectional + 1 or 2 small chairs.... not everything has to match, just balance well!

As far as arranging furniture with the columns, I would tend to ignore them and group seating around the fireplace. You are always in good company with a more flexible 3-seat sofa and two upholstered armchairs (or swivels.) I think a sectional will just add another complication to the space. What is opposite the fireplace? Are there any floor outlets near the columns or actually in them? Is there any electrical wiring in the bulkhead above them? They might be interesting if lighted. You could also install some glass shelves between the two that are near the exterior wall. Lighted from the top, that would be a great display for something like colored blown glass. As for the lighting, you can find less expensive variations on those. Scaling them for your room size will also lower the price somewhat.

This is a very rough drawing, but shows the family room. It does cut off the fireplace on the left a little.

And here is the room, looking through to the fireplace wall (behind the stack of sheet rock).

By controlling where the sitter is looking, you define the space.

Put a sofa parallel to the TV wall, facing the TV, with a sofa table or low bookcase backed up to it to define the TV area.

Define the fireplace chat area with a rug. A pair of loveseats, or a loveseat and two chairs, one slightly angled with its back to the doors and the other (or pair of chairs) matching with a nice couple of chairside tables would define the fireplace part. People sitting here should be facing each other, at a comfortable conversation distance.

There will be the blank corners outside the fireplace conversation area. Good for a potted plant, maybe a small writing table in front of a window looking out ... a solitary activity. Maybe a bookcase

And If you are having a big get-tpgether, just turn the sofa around so it's part of the conversation area.

Is your tv a flat screen to be hung on the wall or a larger size tv with entertainment center/stand? Do you already have furniture that you'd like to use or will you be buying new?

Here's a try at a layout. The piano made it difficult because they take up so much space. I assumed the piano was an upright. The red things are lamps and I threw a couple of trees in the corners.

I have a big room with a fireplace on one end and a TV in the other.
Here is the layout we used

And here is what it looks like in "real life"

TV side - TV is a flat panel and against the wall, directly across the loveseat. You can see the brown media cabinet below it

This is very helpful! I really love it. You are like a best friend at my call anytime of day, who is very creative and has style.

I don't have a TV yet, probably flat on the wall, but I need a place for vcr, receiver, satellite box, etc.

Our furniture!! Well, we have our old stuff, things my mom keeps giving me and much from my DH's mom, too! But it's all been in storage, not sure how it's all going to pull together. I will be back here for advice.

We will have med. stained wood trim/doors, fairly traditional but a wider base at the floor.

Saving this to file, hope to start moving in this room by Sept. Keep it coming.Thanks, Lisa
