Choosing between sewing machines

Dear Forum,

After many trips to the tailor and $$$ spent on shortening pants and uniform alterations, my wife and I are ready to save our money and do these our selves.

We decided to purchase a sewing machine. My mother has been sewing for years and has a 20 year old Viking 098 E (I think thats the model). She has suggested that we go look at the Viking and Pfaff machines, along with some demin. Since we will be using this for hems and stitching name tags, my mom suggested that they demonstrate that the machine has enough power to go through 6-8 layers of demin.

We have been looking at the Viking Interlude 435 and Prelude along with the Pfaff Hobbyist and Select line. I havent tried any of these machines nor do I know the price ranges; we have not been to the stores yet. I would like to stay under $1000.

Does anyone have any suggestions or has any experience with any of these machines?

Thanks.

Brian
