removing chain link fence

I have a section of chain link fence to take out, about 15 feet. Is there a saw I can use to cut the posts? Will a circular saw work?

use a hacksaw or a reciptrocating saw.

FWIW Depending on where the fence is located, justing cutting off the posts and leaving the buried portion might create a tripping hazard or could really hurt someone if they fell right on it. Why not get a shovel and dig them out?

this is a very old discussion, however, I have dealt with a very nasty, very large trumpet vine. It grew from some people behind our houses and invaded a rather new redwood fence - and took it to the ground. The neighbor to next door to me and I got out there and started cutting the vine down. It took us 3 or 4 months to get the thing down to the ground. Then I drilled holes in the stubs of the root balls and poured stump killer in them and wet them down with roundup. When we would see shoots coming up - we used straight roundup on them. But it is gone. It took us a couple of years to get completely rid of it - but we did it. There is still some in the backyards to our houses - but we don't let it get started on our side. You just have to stay after it - it is terribly invasive.

The posts are weakest in withdrawal, so lift them up. If they are bedded in concrete you can lift the entire anchor. Drill a 1/2 inch hole through the post about 6 inches above the ground. Use a pair of 10 foot 2x4s as levers. Put a bolt though the 1st 2x4 about 2 feet from the end, than through the post, then through the second 2x4. Put a nut on just to hold everything in place (not even tight). Soak the ground ground the post with a garden hose for about 10 minutes, push the post from side to side (maybe add more water), then lift it out with the 2x4s. If you do not have enough lift, push the post sideways to keep it from slipping down and add some cinder blocks under the short end, then lift again. An old fashioned bumper jack and some chain used to be an easy way, but bumper jack seem to have gone the way of the dodo. They had a 36-48 inch lift range. Really nice for yanking out posts.

Jmackie, Good lawn fertilizer, Espoma. Compost top dressing....Bravo! Once your turf thickens up, and you mow it at the right height for the breeds of grass in it, weeds will disappear, being choked out. First determine what is growing next door in the root zone of your climbers. If flower beds, I believe you are OK. If a shrub border, I believe the chance of weed killer being applied is slim. If lawn, perhaps recommend a non-herbicide fertlizer, explaining the negativ environmental impact of herbicides. Explain your situation to them with the roses. They should be delighted to see you beautify your property, and cooperate. It raises THEIR property value as well as yours, at your expense, effort, and time. Your neighbors may not even fertilize their lawn, so it could be a non-issue. BTW Milorganite (6-4-0), is better than Espoma (8-0-0), and at considerably less cost. Arnold, my brother's brother in law, used Milorganite on his lawn, 3 times a year: early spring, early summer, and fall, at my recommendation. He blessed me up and down for the rich, green, thick lawn he soon grew, cheaply, and safe for his children and dogs. He also overseeded his original horrible lawn with a blend of modern, improved fescues and perennial rye, no Kentucky blue grass, at my insistence, too. Then mowed it in spring at 2.5" and then for the summer at 3", every year the same. With the improved overseeded grasses and Milorganite, the lawn was the envy of his neighbors who all had professional lawn services, but every July-August their lawns would go dormant, and brown up while Arnold's stayed rich and thick green with no watering other than rainfall. My first choice of tools to remove the steel posts would be a "Hot Wrench" which is common trade vernacular for an acetylene torch. With a torch you could burn the posts off flush with the ground, whereas with saws you will probably leave a stub up that will either be a continual trip hazard or a prime method of tearing up your lawn mower.

Dig down a bit a whack em off below grade if they have concrete chunk on them. Rent or buy one of the little 4 or 4.5" high speed angle grinders and use a cutting wheel, would slice it off fast. $19.00 on sale for the real cheap ones plus about $5 for a cutting blade.

Are they in concrete, or just in the ground? If the latter, you just need a big pipe wrench. Put it on the pipe and rotate while someone else pulls up on the pipe. They come out real easy.

disconnect the fence from the posts, then pull the posts up with a truck, mower, or 4 wheeler. this method works whether they are in concrete or not. I have pulled up 4 inch posts with 240 pounds of concrete on them with my old tahoe, so a fence post should come right up.

How do you attach the post to your truck do you just use a chain and attach it some how. It sure sounds like it would do the trick.

Wrap the chain around the post three or four overlapping turns. Tension on the outer turns will will make the inner turns dig into the post and grip it. You can hook the other end to your trailer hitch. I wouldn't let it jerk, though.

just like thecobbler said, wrap it a few times and hook it to the trailer hitch. ease the vehicle away from the post, it will not take much force to pull it out.

if you snatch it full speed, the post CAN end up in your windshield! so just do a slow steady pull and it pops right out of the ground.
