Looking for sewing machine cart with really good wheels

Hi all,

I've recently started taking a sewing class where I ride the light rail and then walk about four blocks to the store. I have a wheeled sewing machine carrier from Joanns which was fine for going a few steps from my car into the class, but it's not so great for truckin' down the street, going over train tracks and whatnot. The wheels are small, hard, and too close together, so it gets stuck and tips easily.

Info on these has been really hard to find on the Internet; maybe I'm using the wrong words. I did find the Tutto carts, which have 4 wheels and would be really cool if there was some way to put a break on! But there isn't, and I have visions of my sewing machine flying down the train car, taking out people's ankles as it goes... :)

Any suggestions on a good quality cart I can look for?

I use a luggage carrier,then again i don't go by train or anything like that.

Sounds like you need something with bigger wheels,so they don't get stuck.Do you have a dh or SO tHAT COULD POSSIBLY MAKE YOU ONE.Oops guess my fingers hit the caps lock,sorry bout that.

Bernina makes a very nice wheeled tote; however, it is quite spendy, and I think you have to purchase both pieces, the wheeled bottom part for the sewing machine and the stacked top part to hold the embroidery machine attachment. Check with a Bernina dealer to see if they can be sold separately.

I am interested in restoring an old machine we have. It seems to run but will need some cleaning and a few parts. I'm trying to identify it first. It is a Goodhousekeeper, green. The plate says " Model SAMB, Deluxe Automatic Sewing Machine, Japan". Another plat has stamped :H24578" onle on it. Next to that is stensiled "J -A38". But on the underside the base has cast into it "J-C36". Also cast into the base are the circled numbers "2" and "15". Lastly, there is some sort of logo cast into the underside, it looks like a capital "Z" overlayed onto the number "8". Do you have any idea what this is? How old? Can I find a manual? Or do you know where I can go to find out? Can I post a pic? (I don't see that as an option). Thank you for any help.

Thanks zone 8grandma! That site is fun! Thanks Teresa, I have always cleaned out under the bobbin area, however, I've never had my machines given a yearly checkup. Never knew to. I forget which Janome I test drove now, but I've noticed that the Huskystar C20 is VERY similar, except for price. The Huskystar is $500 and the Janome is $1400. Can anyone tell me if they are a good machine? I read somewhere not to get the Huskystars because they're a cheap imitation of Viking. Viking machines are made in Sweden and the Huskystars are made in the Orient. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated. I tried calling Carol's Viking Sewing Center on Saturday. I spoke with one of her employees who thought the machine I was talking about was the Emerald 118, but would have Carol call me. She hasn't yet and I've checked out that machine and it cannot be the right one. The one my husband's work uses must do the alphabet because I know he had his name "embroidered" on his clothes. So I'll have to wait to see if she calls me in the next few days. I'm very curious to see if that machine is the C20. As for getting a machine for Christmas it looks like it won't happen just yet. Still don't have all the info DH (dear husband, right?) needs before we take the plunge ($$). And with him working 12+ hours a day right now, he can't really devote the time to check out the machines. I'm guessing that this'll be my last machine and I don't want to rush into it just because there's a deadline for a present! Anyhow, I have somewhat decided that the Huskystar C20 does what I want, I just need to make sure it's a good machine. So, I'll be off today to try to find a sewing foot pedal for my Necchi so I can at least use my machine. I jumped the gun in offering my mom's old sewing cabinet to my sister because I had mine in the shop to get tuned up and have them put a foot pedal on (my dad removed my foot pedal years ago to hardwire into the cabinet). Now I have a nicer cabinet and need a foot pedal back on it so it'll fit in the cabinet AND be portable. Thanks for all the info! Susan

It's a Kenmore 158-330 from 1969. You can guess by that fact that I am not serious about my sewing but it's well-behaved and easy to use. Some of the old cabinets are acceptable for functional furniture--the Singers tend to be a bit nicer than the Kenmores, I noticed. Cabinets from this era aren't quite as fancy as the older ones but that just makes them easier to refinish. I'll keep an eye on Craigslist--there's currently a very cool sewing armoire from the 70s for sale. So functional! So ugly. I'm sure it was very on trend in the 70s...and I don't have a place for it. If this were local to me I'd be very tempted. A parts donor and a table! I had a thought I wanted to share.... Most of us who have been around awhile learned to sew with the big 4 patterns (Simplicity/McCalls/Butterick/Vogue). It was fine, but I taught beginning sewing a few years ago at a local Joann's and I was quite struck by how unnecessarily complicated they are. The graphics are pretty terrible and they just make things more complicated than they truly are. So I wanted to suggest that perhaps you could find a Sew Along on a blog, or on YouTube, for an easy project such as sleep pants. Watch the video all the way through with her first and then assemble the supplies and have fun with it. I've also been a teacher for a long time, and I truly believe this new method is an easier way for people to learn (both kids and adults), and it's much more empowering.

I have a DH who *could*, theoretically, make me one - but if I want it this decade I'd better not count on that. :)

I was actually at a Bernina dealer today, but they don't seem to carry the Bernina case. They didn't mention it, anyway. They are going to be carrying the Tutto pretty soon, but agreed that there doesn't seem to be any way to keep it from rolling away.

Thanks for the suggestions, though - any other ideas?

You can buy luggage carts all by themselves. Basically, a scaled down, foldable hand cart. (hand cart - like you might use to move boxes - what the UPS guy uses to stack boxes on and wheel them out to the truck)

Luggage carts are often more heavy-duty than a wheeled suitcase, as they are designed for strapping on several suitcases at a time.

You'd still have to have the sewing machine in a case of some kind, and you'd have to strap it on - probably with bungee cords, but you could also strap on additional cases. Look for a sturdy one; some are on the lighteight side because the goal is to make them easy to put in a carry-on bag, while others are clearly designed to carry up to 200 pounds.

The luggage carts work very well. If you have a thrift store close to you, you will usually find them there for very little money. Now that suitcases have wheels, carts are not needed and are being donated. Mine has larger wheels. Just use a strap, around the machine and cart, to hold it together securely. HTH
