I think the drum pendants go with the overall feel of your kitchen better. With a 9' island you could get away with the width if they're placed properly. Also it's white and not see through. Light will come through that shade.

I saw that second fixture in person and it's very transitional looking in person which isn't the vibe I'm getting from your kitchen.

Thanks for your post- The drum pendant has a white opaque interior. No light actually comes through the shade. I put a very bright light into it. Nothing.

I do like the drum pendant that you chose a lot! That being said, I was just wondering if that might just compete with the wall paper you are planning to use? Just to throw out another option, if you like that cottage look and using the glass pendants....have you seen the Hundi Lantern from Pottery Barn?
Your kitchen will be gorgeous no matter which pendant you choose!!

I like the drum shade, but maybe over the dining room table, instead? The glass pendants are nice...and I like the metal, but maybe something a bit more cottage feel.

If you're not using beadboard, what are you using for the backsplash? And, are you planning to still have a prep sink?

lavender- Yes That's another option (dining room table). I think the schoolhouse pendants were more "cottagey" but I just don't love them and I want to love the pendants : )

Not sure about backsplash but was thinking of maybe doing Danby simple subways or another simple subway. I have to go look actually and something else may jump out at me. I think the beadboard may be hard to keep clean.

Again, I feel like I'm going for "OTK meets yellow meets Cottage" Is that too much "meeting"?? LOL I think I'm less of the cottage type which is why I like a mixture of old and new. I feel like the yellow color, the pulls, the glass cabs, possibly inset uppers, farm sink, and glass pulls will give the kitchen a vintage feel. I think the fabrics are a little more transitional as well as having stainless fridge and ovens... Then there's the walnut and marble which I LOVE.. Do you know what I mean? I feel like any of the pendants would work but would just lean the kitchen one way or the other.

OH, for the glass cabs I'm thinking of either putting my fabrics (above) in the back of the cabs or perhaps painted yellow beadboard... The 3rd option is a wallpaper similar to the one in my inspiration photo.. (The fabrics will also be used for window treatments, placemats, potholders, coasters, etc..)

Fishies- Glad to help...and I think your choices are going to make one very charming, inviting and lovely kitchen :)

As for the backsplash, I think beadboard might be the easiest to keep clean, since you can paint it with an easy to clean enamel...and if you save some paint, worse case scenario you can touch up any mishaps. Not so easy to do that with marble. If you pick and easy to clean subway tile (and grout!) then that would be a good choice, too.

For the upper cabinets, I think beadboard would look nice, especially if you have beadboard for the backsplash. The fabrics and wallpaper would also look nice, but will distract more from your dishes/display. If you have white dishes...very nice, but beadboard would work better with patterned/floral dishes.

Of course, if Boxer or someone else posts some beautiful pictures, I might completely change my opinion! LOL

Love your concepts for your kitchen, and your fabrics and dishes look wonderful together. I have to agree with others that the drum shade will distract from the fabrics and I just don't see the other fixture in your kitchen (as you describe it). Have you looked at the Clemson fixture at Restoration Hardware? I think it would compliment your other other finishes nicely wihout distracting from them at all.

I vote for drum shades!!! I love your YELLOW!!! It all ties in so well together. So warm and inviting and UNIQUE!! Glass shades just not as charming as the drum shade you have picked out.

lavender- I thought the grooves in the beadboard would be hard to clean. Of course, you and I have been thoroughly educated on the ups and downs of marble! : ) In a way, I don't want subway b/c it's so common now but I do really love it anyway! Like I said, I'll see what I come across.

For the uppers I'll probably put some yellow vases, glassware etc... No dishes as they will be in a drawer in the island. The uppers are white. Would you do yellow beadboard that match the lowers? I liked that the wallpaper brought the yellow up to eye range. Same with the drum pendant. I'll have to think about the fabrics and drum competing. However they will be quite spread out (not all smashed together like my pic above) so I don't know if it would really be too much. Especially in the back of my cabs.

flwrs- Thanks so much for the compliments! That light is very nice but it is exactly what I don't want--- and I don't mean that at all bad- but just to help others know what I may like to use. I appreciate your idea for sure though : )

I think you're right... I need to think about fabrics and the drum pattern working together. Specifically where I will be putting them, etc. If I use a patterned/fabric light shade I may be better with a solid color behind my glass cabs.... Or if I do the drum light in the OP I could use a wallpaper like my inspiration kitchen b/c they are so similar.

As usual lots to think about... unless I do a light like the one in this reply then it's easier.

The more I look at the lantern light ^ I really like it! Has some femininity to it and the brushed nickel looks nice with the fabrics. Goes much better with my overall vision than the Thomasville one in the OP.

Maybe a mixture of the lantern and the drum for the kitchen and dining area...

I like the drum pendant alot, but agree that the pattern will compete with all the other beautiful patterns you have chosen (love the combinatin of blue and yellow!)

This is a fun kitchen! OTK meets cottage yellow -- definitely not the right space for the schoolhouse lights, I agree.

I love the glass around the Thomasville light. really special, but the style is off. That glass looks like it obscures the bulb enough; I don't like seeing bare bulb.

2Littlefishies -been so busy with my kitchen - so haven't chimed in. Not that you want my color design options as I failed fine art 101 (not really but LOL)

I would like the drum light with a coordinating fabric. The lantern is pretty - but would it be too much side light - I think you do need up and down in this area.

I assume you have some flood in the perimeter for overall lighting?

If I didn't miss anything, and from looking at your plan, the only place for the fabrics would be lining the back of the cabinets? And maybe by the windows? I don't see any other place for them. If so, then I think you can use that beautiful yellow drum pendant with no problem. People are looking at all of the fabric and pendant next to each other, and that's not how it would be in your kitchen.

Love your color and fabric choices! I too don't care for the school house light; to me, there's something 'harsh' about it.

2Little fishes - I love some of the lantern type pendants shown above, but be cautious of using lights that point up. Candle type bulbs that point up are generally considered accent lights rtaher than task lights (I believe, no electrical experience).

My cabinets were just put in and even though I have a good amount of high hats and I will soon have under counter lighting, I can still see that I need some good task lighting pointing at the island.

Your plan is really progressing! I guess I better focus on lights too.

I really like that last nickel lantern you posted, 2Littlefishies. I also like the one oldbat2be posted (lower pic)- no open top, so dust would not fall in. Both are simple, not too ornate.

In your inspiration photo, the wall paper was eye catching, while everything else was rather subdued. (The curtains are plain. The beadboard is subtle. The hardware doesn't stand out.)

With your scheme, it's the opposite, I think: your fabrics are eye catching, and I assume your walls will be plainer. So I think that you need to do something simple with your lights. A drum shade with tone-on-tone white (maybe a slim stripe - I forget what this is called) or even yellow stripe seems like it would be pretty in the background. Or a white damask.

I like the shape of the drum pendants.

purplepansies- yes that's what I was thinking... that in the photo they are crammed together but really the fabric being in the back of a few cabs and over the window isn't really that much.

Anyway, I'm thinking it comes down to making the right choice for what is in the cabs and where the fabrics will be used. If I can get the drum pendants done with one of my coordinating fabrics I think that would really be great.

If I use the drum as is (what is that pattern called? damask?) then MAYBE still use the fabrics as window treatments/cabinet backing OR use a simple beadboard for the back of the cabinets.

Good point about the lanterns giving off a lot of side light and not as much up/down. Nini has lanterns I wonder how she feels about them over her island?

oldbat2be- Those are very nice! When looking at the first I think I'd like it even more if it were in a brushed nicked or that type of color vs. black. The 2nd one seems contemporary to me but I could be totally wrong. Any ideas on that anyone?

pawa- you made an important observation that was in one of my threads a few months back about my inspiration photo. (The designer was Betsy Speert).
The wallpaper does pop but the kitchen is pretty subdued. Even the window treatment. My fabrics aren't so subdued but I think i'm okay with that- however I don't want to overdo it either!
I should note that these fabrics will be in the dining area as well- for the window seat cushion probably, a window treatment, and then just some placemats, etc.
SO, even if I use them sparingly in the kitchen (really both are one big room) they will get picked up in the DR.

Please keep your thoughts coming. I'm also going to see if I can get the pendants in one of my fabrics just so I know and/or see if I find a solid color one I like... In the end I DO love them the way they are and if I use them I'll just be careful about the back of the glass cabs and the 6' window treatment.

DH wants bell jar lanterns like the pottery barn example for our island lighting. I've been thinking about the ones Nini used. I love that drum shade fixture, but I agree with others that it might fit better over your kitchen table. Love all your choices so far! When is this kitchen going to come to life? :-)

I think your drum shade works. Whether in the kitchen or dining room, it fits with your look. Be very sparing with the your fabrics, though. Of the options you show I think the yellow bird print might work best for window treatments. You can always add napkins, placemats, etc. bit by bit later.

I'd steer clear of the schoolhouse pendants. They're period, and your kitchen isn't.
