It's going to take a while, Aviastar...the soil up there is extremely thin in many places, so it'll be a couple years probably before I can get it done. For now, I have:Dainty Bess and Mystery Peachy-pink HT right up close to Wland. I also stuck in an own-root Comtesse du Cayla that had out-grown it's pot; perhaps too strong of a colour, but maybe it'll blend in.I put Mrs. Sam clg about 4 meters away;hopefully this'll grow up with an ash tree.I think that's all for this year, unless I decide to plant out my own-root Pink Mermaid behind Wland; it's still kinda small, though. The plan for future years is:put in a peachy-pinkie climber/rambler opposite Mrs Sam (Paul Noel, Paul Transon, Meg...lots of choices),and maybe another such climber can go into the arms of a big wild rose that's already there, between Mrs Sam and Wland,or else perhaps this'd be the spot for the purple-leaved shrub.Lorapetalums do look beautiful, but I got the idea from Internet that they prefer acid soil, so I doubt they'd like my garden much.Cotinus,berberis and Physocarpus op. might be better choices, but there's a real good'un that I found, too: Sambucus niger Black Lace or Black Beauty!!!! Deciduous,but very beautiful, judging from the photos,and quite delicate-looking. Better yet, sambuca does grow wild in the woods around here, so that makes me think it might do well in my garden. I also found a purple-leaf weigela offered here in Italy... Then,in front of the climbers/ tall shrubs,I could put in the more graceful shrub-roses ; those with cascading habits; I'm thinking of Hybrid musks in particular, but maybe also Phyllis Bide, grown as a cascader...another Cornelia, say, and a Francesca...then, if it all seems to welcome a touch of contrast, maybe a dark pum-coloured rose...but for this year, we're at the tail end of planting season, and I've already put in more than 100 baby roses ,so I think I've probably already really over-extended myself! bart

felisa, how long have you had your miss manners? My first year with them (last year) they grew from seed and flowered....not a huge display, but flowered nicely for a first year. I transplanted them to their permanent spots late summer and this year they came up and looked so healthy and the flower display was even more lovely than last. Do you think that maybe they need to establish in one spot for a year or so to be their best? I hope you get to see them at their best. I am very happy with them.

Starting Oct 8 I became ill with diarrhea, achy joints, general weakness and darkened urine. After two weeks of illness I went to the doctor (virals get better after 7-10 days). I was diagnosed with Type-A hepatitis. The good news is that you will get better, most people never suffer any lasting side effects and you will have a lifelong immunity. I have only eaten at the company cafeteria (no illness reported), Sho-Nuff BBQ in Alex City, CiCi's Pizza and a local Mexican restaurant. No one else in my household is ill. After some food-borne hepatitis scare a few years ago I asked my doctor to immunize me against ANY hepatitis virus he could. I can't remember which ones it was (A, B or C, X, Y or Z), and I had to end up paying for them with no help from my insurance, but I'm glad I did. Now, if I go to taco-smaco and eat green onions that were grown using human feces, I'm protected from everything but the nausea that comes from knowing I've eaten human sh!t. The have now ruled out hepatitis A, B and C. The have now discounted the possibility of Hep D & E. Now the bad news is there are many other possibilities for what is making me sick. I went last Monday for an abdominal ultrasound. That is both good and could be bad news. I went to a gastroenterologist doctor Wednesday and he sent me for a CT scan Saturday morning. I have almost a yellow aura but I am a little feeling better daily. Symptoms are slowly leaving but my energy level is zero. I'm still not feeling good. The doctor called late Thursday afternoon. He said the CT scan showed bile duct is dilated. I am scheduled for an ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) on Monday. It is a tube down the throat and just past the stomach outlet. According to Wikipedia this procedure will allow them to see the problem and they also have options to clean out the duct, possibly remove stones or insert a stint. The results were a relief. My dad had colon cancer and then died with stomach cancer. Military Region 1 in Vietnam was sprayed with some of the highest concentrations of Agent Orange in Vietnam. I am still as weak as a kitten. I'm as yellow as a Shell oil sign. I've lost 20-25 pounds and my toilet paper budget has tripled. There has not been a moment when I felt "good", only time when I felt better than an hour ago or yesterday. I have new respect for those people who are sick for months with chemotherapy. If this procedure fixes things, hopefully it will be a fast recovery. BTW, this is the only thing they can find wrong except for high blood pressure. I am confident that by SPring I will have bounced back. The next time you see me, I'll be several punds lighter. Thanks to everyone for your thoughts an prayer. It is a BIG surgery to remove a very tiny cancer. It is called a Whipple procedure. They slice and dice and rearrage my insides because the ampulla (valve where common bile duct empties into the duodenum) must be removed due to a few cancer cells. The will remove part of the duodenum, the middle third of the pancreas and lover stomach so they can MAKE ROOM to reattach the bile duct from the pancreas,gall bladder and liver. I'll be in the hospital for 7-10 days. It will be about 3-4 weeks for recovery. It will be the longest vacation I've ever taken. I should be fully recovered by the spring swap. I've already lost 25 lbs and I'll probably lose another 20 -30 lbs by New Year. I have lived in the northeast, on the west coast, in the south Pacific, and now, the southeast, in that order. I've visted all over. And I love all of this great land. I liken it to having children. There is something good and bad about every age (0-12, they can't do anything on their own, but a whole world is opening right before their eyes, for example). There is something good and bad about every place. I've lived in small towns and bigger cities. And visited, on an ongoing basis, larger cities. I like them all. I'd miss my family, because somewhat like lily, my family has been here since the late 1700s. They've been born here, died here, there is history here on which they've made their mark. Currently, everyone in my immediate family lives here, and I love seeing them constantly. All year long. The weather is great in Tennessee. Not too hot, not too cold. The humidity typically doens't bother me as it does those who visit. We don't get snow storms. We get an inch or two at a time. Four inches+ is very atypical. The change of seasons is the part I embraced first when I moved here from the extemely even Monterey, CA (which was fantastic because it was very even keel and never too cold or too hot. But not hot enough I could walk barefoot outside). I guess I'd learn to love wherever I landed, just like I always have. It did take me 20 years, literally, not to miss California food. The freshest seafood and produce. Mmm. What I'd miss about Tennessee? Yep, just family. It's nice here, but distinctive terrain, weather, etc.? Not really.
